- One day, her husband brought home an invitation to a fancy party. Instead of being happy, Mathilde tossed the invitation card and began crying.
- Her husband gave her 400 francs to buy a dress which originally he saved to get a rifle.
- When the week of the party rolled in, Mathilde became upset about not having jewellery and tried asking her friend, Jeanne Forestier, for it.
- Mathilde borrowed a stunning necklace from her friend and enjoyed the party. However, when she reached home in the morning, the necklace was missing.
- Distressed, they searched the cab they were in and the streets. They also approached the police for help.
- Meanwhile, her husband asked her to write a letter to Jeanne, saying that she was getting the necklace repaired as she found the pin broken.
