BA Admission 2025 is conducted based on both merit and entrance test processes, subject to the university or college. Bachelor of Arts (BA) is a commonly sought 3-year undergraduate program (or 4 years as per NEP 2020) that deals with the basic areas of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Liberal Arts.

Popular specialisations at BA are Economics, Political Science, History, Geography, Sociology, Psychology, English, Philosophy, and others. Students can opt for general or honours streams based on the college and their career aspirations. The eligibility criteria for BA Admission are that candidates should have passed Class 12 from a respective board in any stream with at least 45-60% aggregate marks (varies as per college). The top universities admit students through national and institutional entrance tests, while the majority of others provide direct admission on the basis of Class 12 merit.

Some of the known and recognised BA entrance exams are CUET UG (Central Universities, DU, BHU, JNU, etc.), IPU CET, SAT India (for international curriculum candidates), LPU NEST, JMI Entrance Exam (Jamia Millia Islamia). Some of the top BA colleges in India include the University of Delhi (DU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, Christ University, Bangalore, and Amity University, among others. The course fee for a BA program varies from INR 1,000 in government colleges to INR 4.3 lakh per annum in private universities.

BA Eligibility Criteria

To secure admission in a Bachelor of Arts (BA) program in 2025, candidates must meet a few basic academic and age-related requirements. Students should have passed Class 12 or equivalent from a recognized board in India, such as CBSE, ICSE, or any state board. While the minimum qualifying percentage is usually 50%, some institutions accept 45% or even 40%, especially for reserved category candidates. One of the major highlights of the BA course is its stream flexibility, meaning students from Arts, Science, or Commerce backgrounds are eligible to apply. For entrance-based admissions like CUET UG 2025, students must also appear for the respective entrance test and meet the required cutoff scores. Although most universities do not impose an upper age limit, the minimum age is generally expected to be 17 years at the time of admission. Additionally, colleges may follow reservation policies as per government norms, offering relaxations in marks or seat quotas to eligible candidates.

  • Must have passed 10+2 from a recognized board.
  • Minimum aggregate marks: 45–60% (varies by institution).
  • No specific stream restriction (Arts, Science, or Commerce candidates can apply).
  • Age: Minimum 17 years (varies).
  • Some universities have reservation criteria based on caste, domicile, and EWS status.

BA Admission: Merit-based

Merit-based admission is a known route to enter BA courses without appearing for entrance exams like CUET UG. Many universities, especially at the state level, private or autonomous colleges, admit students based purely on merit and the whole board examination score. This is ideal for many students who have done well in their 12th examination and prefer to receive admission without having to go through the process of a competitive examination peripheral to their degree.

Colleges such as Fergusson College, Pune; Mount Carmel College, Bangalore; Presidency College, Chennai; and Loyola College also use the merit-based approach to admit students. Students must apply to enter a college's official admission portal, fill out the admission application, upload the required documentation, and await the merit list announcements from the college. The merit cut-off percentages depend on the college and are specific to different specializations—BA in English, BA in Psychology, BA in Political Science, BA in Journalism tend to be higher due to market and demand.

A student has to go through a certain process to get direct admission in BA courses:

  • Merit Lists are prepared using 12th-grade marks.
  • Students apply through the college portal.
  • No entrance exam required for admission.
  • Some colleges have multiple rounds of admission based on cutoff marks.

BA Entrance Exams

The BA Entrance Exam is important for students to get into the top central and private universities in India. The most widely accepted entrance test is the CUET UG (Common University Entrance Test), which is taken at a national level by the NTA, and is a requirement for admission through competitive exams in many leading institutions, including Delhi University, Banaras Hindu University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jamia Millia Islamia, and others. Besides CUET, several private universities (Christ University, Ashoka University, Symbiosis School for Liberal Arts, etc.) also conduct their own entrance and interview processes or aptitude tests for admissions. These entrance tests typically ascertain students' abilities in language use, reasoning skills, general knowledge, and sometimes subject-specific knowledge, depending on the student's BA choice of specialization. Preparing for BA entrance exams not only increases the possibility of high-ranking institutions but is also advantageous for students to be competitive against merit or academic-based applicants in course areas such as English, Psychology, and Economics.

Exam Name Colleges Accepting No. of Seats
CUET UG DU, BHU, JNU, AMU, Allahabad University 3,50,000+
IPU CET GGSIPU and Affiliated Colleges 2,000+
BHU UET (NOW CUET) BHU 8,000+
TISS BAT TISS (BA Social Sciences) 60
PU CET Punjab University 1,200

BA Entrance Exam Syllabus

The BA Entrance Exam Syllabus largely depends on the entrance test being taken. CUET UG (The Common University Entrance Test), is considered the most popular among the central universities, such as Delhi University, Banaras Hindu University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Allahabad University. However, despite that, you should be familiar with CUET's syllabus:

  • Section I (Language): The Language syllabus tests your reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, synonyms and antonyms, and verbal ability in English or any regional language.
  • Section II (Domain Subjects): Domain subjects will consist of MCQs based on the Class 12 NCERT syllabus- it can be based on domain subjects such as Political Science, History, Psychology, Sociology, or Economics (depending on the course you are applying to).
  • Section III (General Test): This section can include questions based on General Knowledge, Current Affairs, Logical Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude (basic math), and Analytical Skills.

For other BA entrance exams (such as IPU CET, PU CET, or Christ University Entrance Test), the same format exists as above, especially with the focus on more language skills, logical reasoning, and general awareness. Most of the tests are mostly objective-type (MCQ type format), and tests your academic and cognitive skills at the 12th grade level.

The total course fee in some of these colleges is between INR 1,500 to INR 6,000 for the entire 3-year BA program, thereby catering to people from economically weaker sections of the society or rural students.

These government colleges can provide quality education at low cost, whilst maintaining the required academic standard, constituting experienced faculty, engaging campus student life, etc. That is, if students decide to join these colleges, this would provide a good investment (ROI) and students may graduate with minimal financial burden.

BA Admission 2025 FAQs

Ques. Is BA a good course after 12th?

Ans. Yes, BA is a good option for students who want to pursue the humanities, social sciences, and the field of liberal arts after completing class 12. It develops good analytical, communication, and critical thinking skills. A BA can also open up careers in fields such as teaching, media, government exams, social work, and research. Furthermore, through the new NEP 2020 format, students can study Honours with Research.

Ques. What is the eligibility for BA Admission 2025?

Ans. To qualify for BA Admission 2025, candidates must have passed Class 12 from a recognized Board of Education. Most colleges require a minimum of 45%-50% marks. For Honours programs, some universities may require students to have studied the subject in 12th grade (for instance, students applying for BA English may be required to have studied English in 12th grade). Reservation policies may provide relaxation to SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwD candidates.

Ques. Which are the best BA specialisations?

Ans. Common and high-scoring BA specializations include English, Psychology, Political Science, Sociology, History, Economics, and Journalism. The best one depends on your interests and career aspirations. For example, Psychology is useful for Mental health counseling, English is great for academics/media and Political Science is useful for UPSC and law.

Ques. Can I get BA admission without an entrance exam?

Ans. Yes, many colleges provide direct admission to BA courses for students on the basis of Class 12 marks. These colleges will be mainly state government colleges and private universities like Fergusson College, Mount Carmel, and Loyola College. You only have to apply in time and meet the merit cutoff - no entrance test is needed.

Ques. What is the fee structure for a BA in India?

Ans. The fees for a BA vary significantly based on the type of college. Government colleges even charge the lowest INR 1,500 - 10,000 yearly fees, while private universities have fees ranging from INR 50,000 to 2,00,000 annually. Central universities like DU and BHU are of good quality at subsidized costs. They are comparatively cheaper.

Ques. What is the admission process for a BA in DU or BHU?

Ans. To apply for a BA in Delhi University or BHU, a student has to give the CUET UG by NTA. Once the CUET UG exam is given, a student has to register on the CSAS (for DU) or on the BHU portal, fill out their preferences, and upload their documents. After you are registered, the consideration for a seat will be based primarily on CUET score, and then secondly on category, and then on course-college preference.

Ques. Can I do a BA in English without studying it in Class 12?

Ans. Some universities require Class 12 English for BA English Honours, while others may admit students according to CUET score or overall merit. If a student has done well in English, even as a 2nd language, some private colleges may allow them to persevere.

Ques. How do I choose the best BA college for myself?

Ans. Evaluate aspects like college ranking, faculty, location, program fees, placement record, infrastructure, and alumni reviews. If you want to go into government colleges, entrance exams like CUET will count. For private colleges, entrance exams may not be as important, and a strong profile and interview may be sufficient. Always go to the official college website before applying.

Ques. How is life at JNU for MA students? Is it only hectic or do students have fun too?

● Top Answer By Akriti Banerjee on 04 Jul 23

Ans. My friend pursued his M.A. from JNU and according to him, he spent the best years of his life at JNU. He went to many well-renowned colleges and universities in the USA, however, JNU is unparalleled. At JNU, you will learn even when you are having fun. Female students feel safe on campus. Male students are respectful towards their female counterparts. There are no whistles or cat-calling incidents on campus. Females can walk fearlessly from one end of the campus to the other, even at midnight.  Life for M.A. students is very hectic at JNU. It is more challenging than one can expect. If you do not maintain a healthy work-life balance, you will end up spending all your time sitting in a corner with your laptop and books. Even your group discussions will end up being solely about studies. If you feel that it will be difficult for you to create a healthy balance between studies and enjoyment, you can join JNU as a Ph.D. student rather than as an M.A. student, you will then get more time to enjoy and experience life at JNU.Read more

Ques. How was your SCMHRD BA interview experience?

● Top Answer By Bharath Harish on 18 May 23

Ans. My interview process started with registration and submission of the SNAP C form, followed by the written ability test (WAT). The technical WAT had questions related to probability, statistics, histogram, coefficient correlation ratio, and pseudo code. The WAT section had two topics, one related to 'business acumen dependent on data analytics,' and the other involving the creation of a story by connecting two given images. After the WAT section, the interview process moved on to group discussion (GD) and group exercise (GE). The GD topic was whether technology would replace teachers in the future, and the GE task involved forming a political party with given Bollywood stars. The personal interview (PI) consisted of questions related to my academic and professional background, technical skills in Java programming and SQL queries, conflict management skills, and problem-solving abilities. The interviewers also presented a hypothetical scenario where I had to suggest arguments to the CEO for hiring a Business Analyst despite the cost-cutting measures. Additionally, I was asked to draw a graph that compares revenue and vs financial success.Read more
