NEIGRIHMS MD Anatomy FAQs
Ques. Is MD Anatomy a good career choice, and what are the job prospects after completing MD Anatomy from NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. MD Anatomy is primarily a preclinical academic specialty, and most graduates go on to careers in medical education as faculty members in anatomy departments of medical colleges. It is one of the most in-demand faculty positions in India due to a shortage of anatomy teachers, and NMC regulations require a minimum number of anatomy faculty for medical college recognition. Graduates can also pursue research careers, work in forensic anatomy, or pursue further specialisation. NEIGRIHMS's reputation as the premier PG institute of the North East adds significant value to the degree, especially for candidates seeking faculty positions in the region.
Ques. What is the seat distribution for MD Anatomy at NEIGRIHMS, and are there any Open North East category seats?
Ans. As per the 2025-26 PG Prospectus, there are 2 seats for MD Anatomy at NEIGRIHMS. Of these, 1 seat is under the All India Quota (open to all Indian nationals based on NEET PG merit) and 1 seat is reserved for bonafide MBBS graduates of NEIGRIHMS. Notably, there are no Open North East category seats for Anatomy in the current seat matrix, unlike some other specialties. This means candidates from outside the North East who are not NEIGRIHMS alumni can only compete for the 1 All India Quota seat.
Ques. What research and laboratory facilities are available for MD Anatomy students at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. The Department of Anatomy at NEIGRIHMS has well-equipped research infrastructure including a dedicated Research Laboratory with microtomes, incubators, and ovens for histological work, and a Genetic Laboratory with a Bio Safety Cabinet and CO2 Incubator. The department is in the process of establishing a Cytogenesis Workstation with a modernised research microscope and genetic software. The Histology Laboratory has 50 binocular microscopes. The department has an active body donation programme and conducts dissection training on embalmed cadavers. Faculty members have published research in national and international journals, and the department's vision includes starting a PhD programme and expanding genetic research capabilities.
Ques. What is the difference between MD and MS in Anatomy, and which degree does NEIGRIHMS award?
Ans. Anatomy is a preclinical, non-surgical subject, and in India it is awarded as an MD (Doctor of Medicine) degree by the National Medical Commission (NMC). The MS (Master of Surgery) degree is reserved for surgical specialties. NEIGRIHMS awards the MD degree in Anatomy, as recognised by NMC. The listing of this course as "MS Anatomy" in some databases is a classification anomaly; the actual degree conferred is MD (Anatomy). Candidates should confirm the degree nomenclature directly with NEIGRIHMS at the time of admission.
Ques. What is the bond obligation for MD Anatomy students at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. NEIGRIHMS has a strict bond policy for all PG students. Students must execute a bond on a non-judicial stamp paper of ₹20 at the time of joining. If a student leaves the course before completing one year, they are liable to pay ₹10 lakhs as compensation. Leaving in the second year attracts ₹15 lakhs, and leaving in the third year without completing the course attracts ₹20 lakhs. Original certificates are retained by the institute throughout the course and returned only after depositing ₹50,000 if the student decides not to join after counselling, or after paying the bond amount if leaving mid-course.
Ques. Can MD Anatomy graduates from NEIGRIHMS apply for faculty positions in medical colleges across India?
Ans. Yes. MD Anatomy from NEIGRIHMS, being NMC-recognised and affiliated to North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), is a valid qualification for faculty positions in anatomy departments of medical colleges across India. NMC regulations require MD Anatomy as the minimum qualification for Assistant Professor posts in Anatomy. Given the acute shortage of anatomy faculty in India, MD Anatomy graduates are in high demand. NEIGRIHMS's standing as a Central Government institute comparable to AIIMS and PGIMER further strengthens the credential. Graduates can apply for faculty positions in government and private medical colleges across the country, as well as pursue research positions in institutions like ICMR, DBT-funded labs, and universities.
