NEIGRIHMS MD (Radiodiagnosis) FAQs
Ques. Does NEIGRIHMS use NEET PG scores for MD Radiodiagnosis admission, or does it conduct its own entrance exam?
Ans. NEIGRIHMS uses NEET PG scores for filling all its PG (MD/MS) seats. There is no separate entrance examination conducted by NEIGRIHMS for the All India Quota seats or the Open North East category seats. The merit list is prepared entirely on the basis of NEET PG marks. Candidates must score at least 50 percentile in NEET PG to be considered for admission. The only exception was historically for a small number of NE open category seats where NEIGRIHMS used to conduct its own exam, but this has since been replaced by NEET PG.
Ques. What is the seat distribution for MD Radiodiagnosis at NEIGRIHMS, and who can apply for which category?
Ans. There are a total of 2 seats for MD Radiodiagnosis at NEIGRIHMS. Of these, 1 seat falls under the All India Quota (open to all Indian nationals based on NEET PG merit), and 1 seat is under the Open North East category (reserved for domicile/permanent residents of the 8 North Eastern states: Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim). Candidates who are bonafide MBBS graduates of NEIGRIHMS are eligible for the NEIGRIHMS alumni quota seats (applicable across specialties as per roster). Candidates from outside the North East can only compete for the All India Quota seat.
Ques. What is the monthly stipend for MD students at NEIGRIHMS, and are there any deductions?
Ans. MD students at NEIGRIHMS are appointed as Junior Residents (PG) and receive a monthly stipend as per the Central Government residency scheme. The stipend is approximately Rs. 75,000 to Rs. 95,000 per month depending on the year of residency, inclusive of DA and CCA. This makes NEIGRIHMS financially attractive despite its very low tuition fees. The stipend is subject to revision by the Government of India from time to time. There are no major deductions reported, though standard government deductions (like income tax if applicable) may apply.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for MD Radiodiagnosis students at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at NEIGRIHMS is provided to Junior Residents (PG) subject to availability. It is not guaranteed for all admitted students. The hostel fee is Rs. 12,000 per year, which is included in the annual fee structure. Mess fees are charged separately and are decided by the Mess Committee based on actual monthly expenditure. Students who do not get hostel accommodation will need to arrange private accommodation in Shillong. The campus is located at Mawdiangdiang, Shillong, which is a relatively quiet area, and private accommodation options are available nearby.
Ques. What happens if an MD student at NEIGRIHMS wants to leave the course midway?
Ans. NEIGRIHMS has a strict bond policy for PG students. If a student leaves the course before completing one year, they are liable to pay Rs. 10 lakhs as compensation. Leaving in the second year attracts a penalty of Rs. 15 lakhs, and leaving in the third year without completing the course attracts Rs. 20 lakhs. Additionally, original certificates are retained by the institute throughout the course and are returned only after depositing Rs. 50,000 (if the student decides not to join after counselling) or after paying the bond amount (if leaving mid-course). This policy is strictly enforced and candidates should be fully committed before accepting a seat.
Ques. What is the quality of Radiology training at NEIGRIHMS compared to other government institutes in the North East?
Ans. NEIGRIHMS is widely regarded as the premier postgraduate medical institute in the North East, comparable to AIIMS and PGIMER in terms of its mandate. The Department of Radiology is one of the oldest and most well-equipped departments in the institute, offering training across all major imaging modalities including MRI (1.5T Siemens), 128-slice CT, Digital Mammography, and C-Arm DSA. Uniquely, the department offers Interventional Radiology services that are described as unique to the entire North East region, covering neuro-endovascular, peripheral vascular, and non-vascular interventional procedures. The department also has active DBT-funded research projects, providing residents with exposure to academic radiology. For candidates from the North East, NEIGRIHMS offers a combination of quality training, research exposure, and financial support that is hard to match in the region.
