NEIGRIHMS MD Pathology FAQs
Ques. What makes the MD Pathology programme at NEIGRIHMS stand out compared to other government medical colleges?
Ans. The Department of Pathology at NEIGRIHMS is the only government institute in the North East with facilities for FISH (Fluorescent In-Situ Hybridisation) for leukemia diagnosis, flow cytometry for immunophenotyping, HPLC for hemoglobinopathies, complete renal biopsy processing with immunofluorescence and electron microscopy, and a fully automated liquid-based cytology system. The department has an IHC panel of over 50 antibodies and a DBT-funded R&D laboratory. With 12 extramural projects, 32 PG thesis projects, and over 100 PubMed publications, the research environment is exceptional for a government medical college in the region.
Ques. What are the career outcomes for MD Pathology graduates from NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. The track record of MD Pathology graduates from NEIGRIHMS is impressive. Of the 26 students who have completed the MD so far, 5 have secured DM (super-specialty) seats, 4 have pursued fellowships in subspecialties, and 15 have joined as faculty or senior residents at prestigious institutes across India. The strong research training, DBT-funded projects, and advanced diagnostic exposure make NEIGRIHMS graduates competitive for academic and subspecialty positions. The remaining graduates are working in private setups.
Ques. Can MD Pathology students at NEIGRIHMS get funding for their thesis research?
Ans. Yes, the Department of Pathology at NEIGRIHMS has a strong track record of securing external funding for PG thesis research. The department has received funding from DBT (Department of Biotechnology), ICMR, and NCG for various research projects. 10 postgraduate students have been awarded DBT thesis grants for their research work. Students interested in funded research should discuss their thesis topics with faculty early in the programme and apply for DBT thesis grants through the institute's research committee.
Ques. What is the seat distribution for MD Pathology at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. NEIGRIHMS offers 3 seats for MD Pathology per session. Of these, 1 seat (approximately 50% of total, rounded) falls under the All India Quota (AIQ) filled through MCC counselling at mcc.nic.in, open to all NEET PG qualified candidates across India. 1 seat is under the Open North East category for domicile/permanent residents of the 8 NE states, and 1 seat is reserved for NEIGRIHMS MBBS pass-outs. Candidates from outside the North East can apply for the AIQ seat through MCC counselling.
Ques. What advanced diagnostic techniques will MD Pathology students learn at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. MD Pathology students at NEIGRIHMS get hands-on training in a wide range of advanced diagnostic techniques. These include: automated hematology analysis with flow cytometry-based reticulocyte counting, coagulation studies, cytochemistry and immunocytochemistry for bone marrow aspirates, flow cytometry for immunophenotyping of leukemias and lymphomas, FISH for molecular diagnosis of leukemias, HPLC for hemoglobinopathy testing, liquid-based cytology (SurePath), immunohistochemistry with 50+ antibody panels, frozen section for intraoperative diagnosis, renal biopsy processing with immunofluorescence, and PCR/real-time PCR for molecular diagnostics. This breadth of training is rarely available at a single institution.
Ques. What is the bond policy and what happens if an MD Pathology student wants to leave NEIGRIHMS midway?
Ans. NEIGRIHMS has a strict bond policy for all PG students. If a Junior Resident (PG) leaves the course before completing one year, they must pay Rs. 10 Lakhs to the institute. The penalty is Rs. 15 Lakhs for leaving during the second year, and Rs. 20 Lakhs for leaving during the third year without completing the course. Original certificates are retained by the institute throughout the course duration and are returned only after the bond amount is deposited. If a candidate decides not to join after counselling, they must pay Rs. 50,000 to get their certificates back. Candidates should carefully consider this commitment before accepting a seat.
