NEIGRIHMS MD (Forensic Medicine) FAQs
Ques. What makes NEIGRIHMS a unique choice for MD Forensic Medicine compared to other institutions?
Ans. NEIGRIHMS is the second institution in India to adopt Virtual Autopsy technology, making it one of the most advanced centres for forensic medicine training in the country. The Department of Forensic Medicine at NEIGRIHMS conducts national-level hands-on Virtual Autopsy training programmes funded under the Department of Health Research (DHR) HRD scheme, which are open to MD Forensic Medicine graduates and PG students from across India at no cost. Additionally, being located in the North Eastern region, PG students get exposure to a unique and diverse medico-legal case mix from the tribal and ethnic populations of the NE states, which is rarely available at institutions in other parts of India.
Ques. What is the NEET PG rank required to get MD Forensic Medicine at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. Based on the 2026-27 admission session, the NEET PG closing rank for MD Forensic Medicine at NEIGRIHMS ranged between 29,923 and 73,728 across categories. Forensic Medicine is generally considered a less competitive speciality compared to clinical branches like Dermatology or Radiodiagnosis, making it relatively more accessible for candidates with moderate NEET PG ranks. The Open North East category seat typically has a wider closing rank range, while the AIQ seat is more competitive. Candidates with ranks in the 30,000 to 75,000 range may have a realistic chance depending on category and quota.
Ques. Can candidates from outside the North Eastern region apply for MD Forensic Medicine at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. Yes, 1 out of the 3 seats in MD Forensic Medicine falls under the All India Quota and is filled through MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) counselling, open to candidates from across India based on NEET PG merit. The remaining 2 seats are for the Open North East category (domicile of NE states) and NEIGRIHMS pass-out quota. Candidates from outside the NE region can apply and be considered for the AIQ seat through MCC counselling.
Ques. What career options are available after MD Forensic Medicine from NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. MD Forensic Medicine graduates from NEIGRIHMS can pursue careers as forensic medicine faculty in medical colleges (Assistant Professor and above), medico-legal officers in government hospitals, forensic experts for courts and law enforcement agencies, or researchers in forensic sciences. The Virtual Autopsy expertise gained at NEIGRIHMS is particularly valuable as this technology is being increasingly adopted across India. Graduates can also work with state forensic science laboratories, CBI, or other investigative agencies. Some graduates pursue further specialisation through fellowship programmes in forensic pathology or toxicology.
Ques. What is the bond penalty if I leave the MD Forensic Medicine course midway at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. NEIGRIHMS has a strict bond policy for all PG students. If you leave the course before completing 1 year, you are liable to pay Rs. 10 lakhs. If you leave during the 2nd year, the penalty is Rs. 15 lakhs, and if you leave during the 3rd year, it is Rs. 20 lakhs. Additionally, original certificates are retained by the institute throughout the course and will only be returned after payment of Rs. 50,000 (if leaving after admission but before joining) or the full bond amount (if leaving mid-course). Candidates should be fully committed before enrolling.
Ques. Does NEIGRIHMS MD Forensic Medicine provide exposure to Virtual Autopsy during the PG programme?
Ans. Yes, the Department of Forensic Medicine at NEIGRIHMS has a Virtual Autopsy facility and PG students enrolled in the MD programme get direct exposure to this technology as part of their training. The department also conducts national-level Virtual Autopsy training programmes (4-week hands-on batches, typically 6 participants per batch) for MD Forensic Medicine graduates and PG students from across India. These training programmes are conducted under the DHR HRD scheme with no course fee. The 2026 batch of this training was scheduled from April 20 to May 16, 2026, indicating the department's active commitment to advancing forensic medicine education in India.
