NEIGRIHMS MD Anaesthesiology FAQs
Ques. How many seats are available for MD Anaesthesiology at NEIGRIHMS and how are they distributed?
Ans. There are a total of 4 seats for MD Anaesthesiology at NEIGRIHMS for the session 2025-26. Of these, 2 seats (50%) are under the All India Quota and are filled through MCC NEET PG counselling, open to candidates from across India. 1 seat is under the Open NE category (for Permanent Residents of the 8 NE states), and 1 seat is reserved for candidates who have passed MBBS from NEIGRIHMS itself (NEIGRIHMS alumni quota). The seat distribution follows a roster system as per NMC norms.
Ques. Is the MD Anaesthesiology programme at NEIGRIHMS NMC-recognised?
Ans. The MD Anaesthesiology programme at NEIGRIHMS currently holds a Letter of Permission (LOP) from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, and is in the process of full NMC recognition. Candidates should verify the current recognition status on the NMC website (nmc.org.in) before applying, as recognition status can change. The institute's other PG programmes like MD General Medicine, MD Pathology, and MD Microbiology are fully NMC-recognised.
Ques. Do PG students at NEIGRIHMS receive a stipend? What are the other financial benefits?
Ans. Yes, PG students (designated as Junior Residents) at NEIGRIHMS receive a monthly stipend: Rs. 75,000 per month in the 1st year, Rs. 80,000 per month in the 2nd year, and Rs. 85,000 per month in the 3rd year, along with applicable City Compensatory Allowance (CCA) and Dearness Allowance (DA). This stipend is in addition to the hostel accommodation provided on campus. Given the very low fee structure (total Rs. 1,25,600 for 3 years excluding mess), the stipend makes the programme financially very attractive.
Ques. What is the bond requirement for MD/MS at NEIGRIHMS and what happens if a student leaves midway?
Ans. All PG students must execute a bond on a non-judicial stamp paper at the time of joining. The bond amount is tiered based on the year of departure: Rs. 10 lakh if leaving before completing 1 year, Rs. 15 lakh if leaving during the 2nd year, and Rs. 20 lakh if leaving during the 3rd year without completing the course. Additionally, if a student opts for a seat but decides not to join after counselling, they must deposit Rs. 50,000 to get their original certificates back. Original certificates are retained by the institute until course completion.
Ques. Can candidates from outside the North Eastern states apply for MD Anaesthesiology at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. Yes, candidates from outside the NE region can apply for the 2 All India Quota seats through MCC NEET PG counselling at mcc.nic.in. These seats are open to all NEET PG qualified candidates from across India. The remaining 2 seats (1 Open NE + 1 NEIGRIHMS alumni quota) are restricted to NE domicile holders and NEIGRIHMS MBBS alumni respectively. Candidates without a PRC from any of the 8 NE states should not apply for the NEIGRIHMS-specific seats.
Ques. What is the clinical exposure like for MD Anaesthesiology students at NEIGRIHMS?
Ans. NEIGRIHMS functions as the primary referral hospital for the entire North Eastern region, handling a wide variety of surgical cases including emergency, elective, and complex procedures across multiple specialties. Anaesthesiology residents get exposure to general anaesthesia, regional anaesthesia, obstetric anaesthesia, paediatric anaesthesia, and critical care/ICU management. The relatively small batch size (4 seats per year) ensures that each resident gets substantial hands-on operating theatre time and ICU postings. The institute also has a dedicated Department of Anaesthesiology with faculty and senior residents who guide the training.
