SMIT B.Tech CST FAQs
Ques. Is B.Tech CST different from B.Tech CSE at SMIT? What are the key differences in curriculum?
Ans. Yes, B.Tech CST (Computer Science and Technology) and B.Tech CSE (Computer Science and Engineering) are distinct programmes at SMIT. CST is offered by the Department of Information Technology and focuses more on software technology applications, including AI, Computer Vision, Soft Computing, Cloud Technologies, and Information Security. CSE, on the other hand, has a broader engineering foundation. Both are 4-year full-time programmes, but CST has a slightly different curriculum emphasis. Students interested in software development, networking, and applied computing often find CST equally rewarding. It is advisable to check the official curriculum documents available on the SMIT website before choosing between the two.
Ques. What is the seat intake for B.Tech CST at SMIT, and how competitive is admission?
Ans. SMIT offers B.Tech programmes with a combined UG intake of 600 seats across all B.Tech branches. The CST programme has a limited intake. Admission is based on JEE Main scores, MET (Manipal Entrance Test), or the SMIT Online Test. Since SMIT accepts students with JEE Main scores across a wide rank range and also conducts its own online test, admission is relatively accessible compared to top NITs or IITs. Students with a decent JEE Main score or good Class 12 PCM percentage stand a good chance of securing admission.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation mandatory for B.Tech CST students at SMIT? What are the facilities like?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at SMIT is not mandatory; it is optional. However, since the campus is located in Majitar, East Sikkim, which is a relatively remote area, most outstation students prefer to stay in the campus hostel. The campus offers double sharing (Non-AC and AC) and single room options. Annual hostel charges range from Rs. 1,35,300 (double sharing, non-AC) to Rs. 2,29,800 (single AC room), inclusive of mess and utility deposits. The campus is known for its serene environment and world-class residential facilities.
Ques. What kind of placements can B.Tech CST students expect from SMIT?
Ans. SMIT has a strong placement record with 95%+ placement rate reported. Top recruiters visiting the campus include Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Oracle, Dell, IBM, ANZ, JP Morgan Chase, CISCO, eBay, Nomura, JSW, Luminous, and Providence, among others. The highest package offered has been 54 LPA. The Training and Placement Cell at SMIT actively conducts employability training sessions in collaboration with reputed training organisations to prepare students for campus placements. CST students, given their IT-focused curriculum, are well-positioned for software and technology roles.
Ques. Can I get admission to B.Tech CST at SMIT without a JEE Main score?
Ans. Yes, SMIT offers multiple admission pathways for B.Tech CST. Apart from JEE Main, students can appear for MET (Manipal Entrance Test) conducted by Sikkim Manipal University, or the SMIT Online Test conducted directly by the university. Sikkim domicile candidates can also apply through the Government of Sikkim's state entrance test conducted by the Director, Technical Education, HRDD. This makes SMIT accessible to students who may not have appeared for JEE Main or have a lower JEE score.
Ques. Are there any scholarships specifically for B.Tech CST students, and how do I apply?
Ans. Yes, multiple scholarships are available for B.Tech CST students at SMIT. The Merit Scholarship offers up to 40% concession on course fee for students with average PCM >= 90% in Class 12. The JEE Main-based scholarship offers up to 40% concession for students with AIR below 2 lakh. Additionally, there are scholarships for Sikkim domicile students, single girl child, differently-abled students, and armed forces dependents. Note that the Need Cum Merit scholarship for B.Tech is applicable for all B.Tech branches except CSE - students should verify if CST qualifies under this scheme at the time of admission. All scholarship applications must be submitted through the Chairman of Admissions at SMIT, along with the required supporting documents.
