NBMCH MS Ophthalmology FAQs
Ques. What is the total number of MS Ophthalmology seats at NBMCH, and how are they distributed?
Ans. NBMCH has 2 seats for MS Ophthalmology. These seats are filled through the West Bengal NEET PG Counselling (WBMCC) process, covering state quota, in-service category, and open category as per the seat matrix published each year. Given the very limited seats, competition is high and a strong NEET PG rank is essential.
Ques. Is there a bond obligation after completing MS Ophthalmology from NBMCH?
Ans. Yes. Students admitted through the West Bengal state quota are required to sign a 3-year state service bond at the time of admission. After completing the MS degree, they must serve in a West Bengal government health facility for 3 years. Failure to fulfil the bond results in a monetary penalty (historically in the range of Rs. 10-25 lakh, subject to current government notification). In-service category candidates have different bond terms as per their service rules.
Ques. What is the monthly stipend for MS Ophthalmology residents at NBMCH?
Ans. As per the latest West Bengal government revision (effective April 2026), PG residents receive approximately Rs. 43,758 per month in Year 1, Rs. 47,124 per month in Year 2, and Rs. 50,490 per month in Year 3. These figures are subject to revision with state pay commission updates. Residents also receive applicable allowances as per state government norms.
Ques. How is the clinical exposure for Ophthalmology at NBMCH compared to Kolkata medical colleges?
Ans. NBMCH is the only government tertiary care referral hospital for the entire North Bengal region, covering districts like Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and neighbouring areas. This results in a high volume and diverse mix of ophthalmic cases including cataract, glaucoma, retinal conditions, squint, and trauma. While super-speciality exposure may be more limited compared to premier Kolkata institutes, the hands-on surgical training and case volume are considered strong advantages for residents.
Ques. What are the career options after completing MS Ophthalmology from NBMCH?
Ans. After completing the 3-year bond obligation, graduates can pursue careers as consultant ophthalmologists in government or private hospitals, set up independent eye clinics, pursue super-speciality fellowships (vitreoretina, cornea, glaucoma, paediatric ophthalmology, etc.) from premier institutes, or take up academic/teaching positions in medical colleges. The MS degree from a WBUHS-affiliated government college is well-recognised across India.
Ques. Can candidates from outside West Bengal apply for MS Ophthalmology at NBMCH?
Ans. Yes, candidates from outside West Bengal can apply through the All India Quota (AIQ) seats, which are filled by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) at the national level. However, the number of AIQ seats at NBMCH for MS Ophthalmology is very limited (typically 1 out of 2 total seats). Out-of-state candidates are not subject to the West Bengal state service bond if admitted through AIQ. They should monitor the MCC website (mcc.nic.in) for AIQ counselling schedules.
