The University of Alberta provides various scholarships to international students, awarding around CAD 34 million each year in undergraduate scholarships, awards, and financial aid. About 1 in 5 first-year students receive a scholarship, helping the university attract talented students from many backgrounds. There are two main types of scholarships for international students: admission-based scholarships, which do not require a separate application and are awarded automatically based on the student’s admission average, and application-based scholarships, which require an early application.
For graduate students, research and teaching assistantships are available, allowing students to work with faculty on classes or research projects these require a contract with the supervisor or department. Top international students can receive up to CAD 5,000 through admission-based scholarships, while the President’s International Distinction Scholarship offers up to CAD 120,000 over four years. The International Leadership Scholarship can provide up to CAD 15,000. Eligibility and scholarship amounts vary, so applicants should review details before applying.
