What Students Say
Likes
- Great faculty and amazing Infrastructure( Big classrooms and halls). The university is so big it took me a whole week to navigate.
- Technology ( we are taught on such big screens )
- It literally has everything. So many outlets of food, a walk-in clinic (doctor), ATM’s , libraries , a very small lake, greenery (Very beautiful)
Dislikes
- Extra-Curricular activities( I haven’t been presented with any clubs and opportunities in which I could take part in)
- York is very boring, a typical all theory university and no fun and experiences.
- Some professors have given me a hard and bad time unnecessarily.
Course Curriculum
- My course was very easy for me until they made exams with pen and paper. It is very tough to manage study with a part-time job as a student.
- My course of HRM is all theoretical and boring, they just once called SHRM industry people to meet us, but just once. Positive aspect is I find this subject very good so I enjoy giving presentations but it can be too theoretical sometimes and makes me not want to study at all.
- The course content prepared is very enough and even more for someone like me. I believe theoretical knowledge never guarantees a job, it's always the practicality that matters.
- They teach everything they are telling on their website. But the industrial exposure and research experience are very less. Honestly, I have heard more from my friends who are in other colleges that their college got this or that industrialist to meet the students. My university just once has called the CHRP-certified people. CHRP is an exam of HRM.
Admission Experience
- I only applied to two of my favorite colleges and universities. One was Humber college and the other was York University. I got accepted at both of them within one month and had my offer letter. But I chose York university for better experiences and a university tag. Because, everyone believes that a university has more and better opportunities but that was not the case for me.
- I did not choose Humber College because it is very tough at studies and I have heard that it gives its students a hard time.
- My admission to York was quite simple and easy. I applied for the course. We had to submit an online video stating why we want to study at York. I submitted that and within one month I got my offer letter. It is very important that we all have our IELTS or any other language proficiency in order to apply for university or college. For York university, we need a minimum of 6.5 band , with no module less than 6. I got the exact same and got in.
- I initially applied for the January intake but due to personal reasons couldn’t leave before May so I got my intake deferred. It was a very easy process that I emailed them and gave a good reason for deferment. Then I got it. My course was available both in January and May. The admission process took a whole 2 to 3 months. From applying to receiving the offer including the defer.
- I have been dreaming of studying in Canada since class 10 in 2017. But Covid happened so I couldn't leave. When I was in college in India I really loved the subject of Human Resources Management and I decided to study it in canada as well and then decided York University for the same. York University has amazing rankings for faculty and teaching norms. Also, I wanted to go to a University and see how it feels to study in a university.
- Also, HRM is considered one of the best courses offered by York. I have made friends here and I am currently loving my student life at York, but it definitely gets boring because there are no extracurricular activities for us.
Faculty
- Faculty members never assist students in finding a part time job, not a single professor will guide you for it or even talk about it. You have to do it on your own.
- A few faculty members have been amazing because they understand and make things easy for us students. They make the class interesting by group discussions and presentations and also give us proper feedback.
- There are a total of 60 students in my class. Mostly are Indian. One faculty of 60 students definitely suffices. There is proper silence in the class and everyone listen quite carefully.
- The faculty in HRM are so good. They solve each and every doubt. And really understand our problems too. But nobody will help you to get a job here in Canada you have to find it on your own.
Campus Life
- There are 3 main campuses of York university. One is Keele, Glendon and Markham. I am in Keele campus. There are many spots to visit like York lanes, a small lake , Tim Hortons mostly everywhere. I honestly haven’t been a part of any extracurricular activities because we are not told about it or informed.
- My university has many beautiful libraries, a proper walk-in clinic in which we students get free consultations via the guard me health card that york gives us.
- I have hardly seen York organizing fests or events because they haven't done anything for us till now. Though the university has an amazing gym and pool and playing activities.
Part Time Jobs
- I am genuinely not aware of TA /RA or DA positions. But I can assure none of my friends got any job at the campus. There are many jobs at York university but hardly anybody gets one because there are so many students. We can work for unlimited hours on campus.
- The maximum allowed hours are 20 hrs but on campus it is unlimited. It is very difficult to get an on campus job. I tried for a whole month to get a job on campus but couldn’t because there’s too much competition.
- Some get basic pay i.e. $16.55 like if anyone works at the restaurant but if working in retail store or security the pay is good $18 to $19. Honestly, getting a job here is very very difficult. I am still applying daily to around 100 jobs but no response because there’s too much competition.
- However, it is difficult to find a part-time job right now in canada. Creating a resume is the first step, putting in your experience and your availability because here the main focus is your availability and nothing else. Searching for jobs on Indeed and Linkedin is the only way and also walk-ins. Mostly people get jobs through these only. But the foremost thing that helps is Reference. But not everyone has that line I don't. But keep applying and tailoring your resume from time to time.
Placement
- Percentage hardly matters, all that matters is your luck and effort to get that job. The most average salary range is $50k to $70k after graduation.
- Most effective way is campus recruiting but I haven't come across it because I just started my course. But LinkedIn indeed helps a lot. I don’t have friends here in Canada who have graduated who I know got placed.
- Average Package: CAD 50,000 to CAD 70,000 per annum
Accommodation
- I opted for an off-campus accommodation because it's definitely cheaper and affordable than the on-campus. I found my place here at Kijiji. My monthly rent is $550 for a shared room. I have wifi, laundry included in my rent.
- Major challenges were legitimacy. A lot of people in Canada take loads of money from students and leave them stranded before they even arrive. I had my relative here in Canada who went for a check of the accommodation before I made it final.
- There are very few chances of finding accommodation through Facebook marketing but try your luck mainly on Kijiji. There are genuine people on this website. I found my roommate here. My place is just 40 mins away from the York university by bus. Many students Come from Brampton, Mississauga, North York and also many reside in York village.
Exams
- Any English proficiency test has to be given in order to get an admission at York. They require IELTS , PTE or even Duolingo. I gave my IELTS and got 6.5 with no module less than 6 which is also their benchmark. Also, you need to submit your video application stating why York university, why study that particular course, what do you like about York university.
I gave IELTS, overall you need a 6.5, 6 or above in every module. I got 6.5
Listening- 6.5
Writing-6
Speaking- 7
Reading-6.5 - ?You can give Duolingo and many other options are available too and that can be checked on the york’s website.
-
We have to submit all of these 3 to the university. But honestly, the main thing that matters is SOP and how you write it and I took help from my counsellor. The main points to include are why choose Canada, why that particular university or college, your career possibilities and that you will leave Canada after your studies. You justify all of these points in your SOP. The other two resumes and LORs hardly matter, to be honest. The main focus is SOP it will decide your selection.
Fees
- Since, it's my very first course at York university. The fees for my course was $19000 plus taxes. When I was in India my counselor suggested that I pay full fees so that there is no issue in the visa. So, that is why firstly I paid $5000 to fix my spot at the university. And then later I gave my full fees. However, in my second course I have decided to pay semester-wise since I already have a visa now.
- I live in a shared accommodation which is affordable so I pay $550 as my rent which is quite good. The transportation can be expensive so I have a transit pass for TTC bus which costs me $120 per month. Apart from $200 on the groceries.
Scholarship
- I did hear about scholarships but we are told nothing. And nothing is available for an international student.
- I believe as per the knowledge I have only master students receive them. But again they don’t inform us about such things. Even I looked it up and emailed the university but they straight away said No, that we don't offer scholarships to international students.
