Deakin University features 6 international scholarships and bursaries, of which 5 are accessible to Indian applicants. Five of the six awards at Deakin University are assessed automatically from your admission file.

  • Standard tuition: A$45,800 (INR 31.44 Lakhs) a year, Master of Information Technology
  • After top merit waiver: A$0 to A$22,900 (INR 0 to INR 15.72 Lakhs) a year
  • After automatic 25% award: A$34,350 (INR 23.57 Lakhs) a year
  • Next live aid deadline: no fixed date, assessed at admission for Trimester 1 2027

The Deakin scholarship engine pairs a three-tier automatic merit ladder with one competitive top award, the Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship. Indian applicants need only a complete course application to trigger the automatic tiers. The sections below break down each level, the award values, and the realistic India funding stack.

Example: A Master of Information Technology at Deakin costs A$45,800 (INR 31.44 Lakhs) a year. With a 50% Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship worth A$22,900 (INR 15.72 Lakhs), out-of-pocket tuition drops to A$22,900 (INR 15.72 Lakhs) a year.

All INR conversions use the live rate of 1 AUD = INR 68.65 as of August 2026.

Deakin's three international merit awards are open and are assessed automatically as applications arrive for Trimester 1 2027 and Trimester 2 2027. The Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship is the only one needing a separate form, and Deakin emails outcomes within four weeks of its closing date. The Southeast Asia Priority Bursary is restricted by nationality and is closed to Indian applicants.

Deakin University PG Scholarships

Four awards apply to Deakin's postgraduate coursework degrees, and the top one can remove tuition entirely. Standard postgraduate tuition runs A$45,800 to A$51,800 (INR 31.44 Lakhs to INR 35.56 Lakhs) a year. Masters degrees are where Indian demand at Deakin concentrates.

Scholarship Name Amount on A$45,800 tuition Eligibility Deadline Apply
Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship A$22,900 to A$45,800 (INR 15.72 Lakhs to INR 31.44 Lakhs) a year High academic achievers commencing a Deakin degree Separate closing date, outcome within 4 weeks Scholarship page
International Scholarship for Excellence A$11,450 (INR 7.86 Lakhs) a year Consistently high past academic performance No separate deadline Scholarship page
International 20% Merit Scholarship A$9,160 (INR 6.29 Lakhs) a year Commencing undergraduate or postgraduate students No separate deadline Scholarship page
Deakin alumni discount A$4,580 (INR 3.14 Lakhs) a year Deakin graduates starting a postgraduate award course No separate deadline Alumni discount page

Every reduction above runs for the normal duration of the degree, not for one year only. On a two-year Master of Data Science, a 25% award is therefore worth A$22,900 (INR 15.72 Lakhs) in total.

How the postgraduate stack works in practice:

  • Automatic tier: apply for the course and Deakin assesses merit from your academic record
  • Competitive tier: submit the Vice-Chancellor's form separately for the 100% or 50% band
  • Alumni tier: the 10% per-unit discount applies only to Deakin's own graduates
  • No stacking guarantee: Deakin does not publish rules allowing these awards to combine

Planning note: A scholarship is tied to the course named in your Letter of Offer. Deakin reassesses it if you later transfer, and transfer is not guaranteed to carry the award across.

Deakin University UG Scholarships

The same three merit awards cover Deakin's bachelor degrees, with dollar values set by lower undergraduate tuition. Standard undergraduate tuition runs A$43,800 to A$46,800 (INR 30.07 Lakhs to INR 32.13 Lakhs) a year. The alumni discount does not apply at this level.

Scholarship Name Amount on A$46,800 tuition Eligibility Deadline Apply
Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship A$23,400 to A$46,800 (INR 16.06 Lakhs to INR 32.13 Lakhs) a year High academic achievers commencing a bachelor degree Separate closing date, outcome within 4 weeks Studylink application portal
International Scholarship for Excellence A$11,700 (INR 8.03 Lakhs) a year Strong Class 12 academic record No separate deadline Automatic at admission
International 20% Merit Scholarship A$9,360 (INR 6.43 Lakhs) a year Commencing undergraduate students No separate deadline Automatic at admission

Undergraduate entry thresholds that gate scholarship assessment:

  • Academic: unadjusted ATAR of at least 50 or equivalent for Commerce and Information Technology
  • English: IELTS 6.0 overall with no band score below 6.0
  • Class 12 guide: 60% to 65% on CBSE, ICSE or state boards (recommended)
  • Selection basis: academic merit, likelihood of success and available places, assessed together

A three-year Bachelor of Commerce at A$140,400 (INR 96.38 Lakhs) drops to A$105,300 (INR 72.29 Lakhs) with a 25% award held for the full degree. That is a saving of INR 24.10 Lakhs.

Insider note: Deakin publishes no fixed Indian board percentage. Your Class 12 result is mapped to an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank equivalent, so a strong aggregate matters more than any single subject.

Deakin University MBA Scholarships

The Master of Business Administration costs A$51,800 (INR 35.56 Lakhs) a year over 1.5 years, and the same merit ladder applies. A 25% award is worth A$12,950 (INR 8.89 Lakhs) a year here, the largest dollar value of any Deakin coursework degree.

One structural caveat outweighs the funding maths. Deakin lists this degree with Online as its only location, and Australian regulations prevent student visas being issued for online Deakin courses.

An Indian applicant who wants to relocate to Melbourne cannot use this route, however generous the award. Entry also needs a bachelor degree plus three years of relevant work experience, including two years in a managerial or professional role.

Before you apply: Treat a Deakin MBA scholarship as a discount on a distance degree, not a relocation pathway. Compare it against the campus-delivered business masters before committing.

India-Specific Scholarships at Deakin University

Deakin lists no India-specific award among its six featured international scholarships. The university does confirm that country-specific and region-specific scholarships exist, and directs applicants to filter its scholarship search by citizenship.

The one nationality-gated award Deakin does feature works against Indian applicants. The Southeast Asia Priority Bursary, worth up to A$2,000 (INR 1.37 Lakh) as a one-off, covers students from Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia and the wider Southeast Asian region.

The realistic Indian funding stack is therefore the general merit ladder plus a Deakin discount, not a nationality award. Run the citizenship filter yourself before assuming nothing exists.

Reality check: Indian applicants at Deakin should plan around the 20% and 25% automatic tiers as the base case. Treat the 50% and 100% Vice-Chancellor's bands as an upside, not a budget assumption.

External Government Scholarships

Deakin participates in the Australian Government's Australia Awards Scholarships programme, which supports students from developing countries. Benefits can include tuition, return airfares, health cover, an establishment allowance and a living contribution.

Eligibility runs off a fixed list of participating countries maintained by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Check your eligibility on the official Australia Awards participating countries list before building it into a funding plan.

Deakin also names home-country funding agencies it works with, and that list covers Canada, Denmark, Germany, Norway and Sweden. India does not appear on it. Indian applicants relying on external funding should therefore look to domestic education loans and private trusts, and verify current terms directly with the awarding body.

Funding Snapshot for Indian Students

  • Best institutional award: Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship, 100% or 50% of tuition
  • Net tuition after top award: A$0 to A$22,900 (INR 0 to INR 15.72 Lakhs) a year on the IT masters
  • All-in cost after top award plus living: A$29,710 to A$52,610 (INR 20.40 Lakhs to INR 36.12 Lakhs) a year
  • Key deadline: submit the Vice-Chancellor's form with your Trimester 1 2027 course application
  • Best external scheme: Australia Awards, subject to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade country list

FAQs

Ques. What is the maximum scholarship an Indian student can get at Deakin?

Ans. The Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship is the ceiling, at a 100% or 50% tuition reduction held for the full degree. On a Master of Information Technology at A$45,800 (INR 31.44 Lakhs) a year, a 100% band removes A$91,600 (INR 62.88 Lakhs) across two years. Living costs and the visa charge still apply.

Ques. Do I need a separate application for a Deakin scholarship?

Ans. Only for the Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship. The International Scholarship for Excellence, the International 20% Merit Scholarship and the alumni discount are all assessed automatically from your course application. Deakin uses your past academic record for that assessment, so no essay or interview is involved.

Ques. When will Deakin tell me if I have won a scholarship?

Ans. Deakin emails scholarship outcomes usually within four weeks of the relevant closing date. You can also check status inside your scholarship application portal account. Because awards are assessed alongside admission for each trimester, an early complete application reaches assessment sooner.

Ques. What academic record do I need for the automatic Deakin merit awards?

Ans. Deakin publishes no fixed percentage cut-off for its merit tiers. It states that consistently high past academic performance drives the assessment. For postgraduate entry you need a completed bachelor degree plus IELTS 6.5, and for undergraduate entry an ATAR 50 equivalent plus IELTS 6.0.

Ques. Does the Deakin alumni discount stack with a merit scholarship?

Ans. Deakin does not publish rules allowing its awards to combine, so plan on one reduction rather than a stack. The alumni discount gives Deakin graduates 10% off per unit on a postgraduate award course, worth A$4,580 (INR 3.14 Lakhs) a year on a A$45,800 degree. Confirm the treatment with International Admissions before accepting an offer.

Ques. Will a Deakin scholarship cover my rent in Melbourne?

Ans. No. Every Deakin international award listed here is a tuition reduction, not a living stipend. You still need to evidence A$29,710 (INR 20.40 Lakhs) a year in living costs for the student visa. Deakin notes that a tuition discount frees cash for living expenses indirectly.

Ques. Can I keep my Deakin scholarship if I change courses?

Ans. Not automatically. A scholarship applies only to the course named in your Letter of Offer. If a course transfer is approved, Deakin reassesses the award, and it is not guaranteed to transfer to the new degree's credit point requirements. International Admissions confirms the outcome after the transfer is approved.

Ques. Are PhD scholarships at Deakin open to Indian students?

Ans. Yes. Deakin states that most of its PhD project scholarships are open to international students. Funding attaches to a supervised research project rather than a general merit tier, so the first step is finding a supervisor. Research intakes run on their own dates, separate from the coursework trimesters.

Scholarship

  • No, I did not receive any scholarship.
  • One of my batchmates received a 25% scholarship on the overall fees for their master's degree.
  • 20 to 25 percent is generally considered by the college to offer scholarships on the overall fees and on average 5-6 people are able to get scholarships if they clear the criteria required for the scholarship.

  • The accommodation is not provided by the college, although they have a tie-up with the external hostel service.
  • Monthly rent could be anywhere around 20,000 to 25,000 indian rupees.
  • The college would not disclose the contact information of other students, essentially making it difficult to communicate with the students to acquire the accommodation of their choice with the partner.
  • I lived in Geeta Residency 4 at Raysan. They provide most amenities and have a decent food taste for north Indians.
  • The campus is roughly 5 kilometres away from the hostel and will require a mode of transport.

  • You'll have no shortage of accommodation options or the ways to find them. There are plenty of online platforms, IM groups, and flyers to help you get your accommodation sorted.
  • Options near the university would be a bit expensive compared to distant options. Similarly, solo accommodations would be costlier compared to dorms. So choose an option that fits your budget and needs.

Scholarship

No, i did not applied for scholarship.

I had to submit my short 300 words SoP and one long detailed SoP, and a detailed CV as well. The main reason was the ranking of this university is quite good as compared to other university and the fee structure is also affordable compared to group of eight. Also the main highlight was the course i took was accredited from Australian computer society(ACS). Overall its good but the course is challenging because i do not have background of IT and the university experience is top notch like the facilities are quite good. The lecture theatre, library, medical centre, Gym are quite good. There are many cafes and vending machine in the premises where you can get variety of food ranging from continental to indian.
