Washington State University offers 700+ scholarship programs, of which 5 are directly accessible to Indian applicants at the Pullman campus.
These awards trim non-resident undergraduate tuition. The typical saving runs $4,000 to $8,000 (INR 3.82 to 7.64 Lakhs) annually. Indian applicants also qualify for external Fulbright-Nehru, JN Tata, KC Mahindra, Inlaks, and Aga Khan funding stacked on top.
- Standard non-resident undergraduate tuition (2025-26): $29,878 (INR 28.52 Lakhs) per year
- Tuition with International Academic Award Level 1: $25,878 (INR 24.70 Lakhs) per year
- Tuition with Academic Award and Merit Award stacked: $21,878 (INR 20.88 Lakhs) per year
- Next priority deadline: WSU General Scholarship, tentative January 31, 2027 (annual cycle)
Currency Note: All INR conversions use the live rate of 1 USD = INR 95.45 as of August 2026. A tuition "waiver" at Washington State University reduces your billed tuition rather than paying cash. Treat every award below as a fee reduction unless labelled otherwise.

Washington State University Scholarships for UG Students
| Scholarship | Amount USD (INR) | Eligibility for Indian Applicants | Deadline (2026-27) |
|---|---|---|---|
| International Academic Award, Level 1 | $4,000 per year (INR 3.82 Lakhs) | F-1 visa, degree-seeking, 3.60+ cumulative GPA at admission | Automatic at admission |
| International Academic Award, Level 2 | $2,000 per year (INR 1.91 Lakhs) | F-1 visa, degree-seeking, cumulative GPA between 3.0 and 3.59 | Automatic at admission |
| International Year One Progression Award | $4,000 per year (INR 3.82 Lakhs) | Completion of the Undergraduate Foundation programme with 3.5 GPA | Automatic on progression, renewable up to 2 years |
| International Merit Award | $2,000 per semester (INR 1.91 Lakhs) | Pullman F-1 undergrad, 3.60+ GPA with 12+ WSU credits, or documented service, or an extraordinary achievement in the past two years | August 1, 2026 (Fall); January 1, 2027 (Spring) |
| WSU General Scholarship | Up to $5,000 (INR 4.77 Lakhs) | Any admitted undergraduate, one form covers 700+ department awards | Priority January 31, 2027 (tentative, opens August 2026) |
| Emergency Tuition Support Award | $1,500 one-time (INR 1.43 Lakhs) | Final-year F-1 or J-1 undergrad facing documented financial hardship | Rolling, non-renewable |
The two Academic Awards are the workhorse. Both are applied to the admission letter with no separate form. Each renews for three additional years if the student holds a 3.0 cumulative GPA and 12 credits per semester.
The Merit Award is the largest per-semester lever an Indian undergrad can pull, at $2,000 (INR 1.91 Lakhs) each term for up to four semesters. It is capped at Pullman and requires 12 credits already banked at Washington State University, so first-semester freshmen are not yet eligible.
Reddit Insight: Indian applicants routinely report the $4,000 (INR 3.82 Lakhs) International Academic Award is baked into the offer letter. The real funding lever is the January 31 WSU General Scholarship form, which routes to department awards worth up to $5,000 (INR 4.77 Lakhs) more.

Washington State University Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students
| Scholarship | Amount USD (INR) | Eligibility for Indian Applicants | Deadline (2026-27) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graduate Teaching Assistantship (TA) | Stipend plus full tuition waiver (amount varies by department) | Admitted master’s or PhD applicant nominated by the hiring department | Rolling with programme deadlines (many departments close December 1, 2026 or January 10, 2027) |
| Graduate Research Assistantship (RA) | Stipend plus full tuition waiver (amount varies by grant) | Master’s or PhD applicant matched to a funded faculty project | Rolling, tied to grant cycles |
| International Academic Award (Graduate) | $2,000 per year (INR 1.91 Lakhs) | F-1 international graduate student with 3.0+ GPA | Automatic at admission where applicable |
| WSU General Scholarship (Graduate) | Award ceilings vary by department | Any admitted graduate student, one form covers department-specific awards | Priority January 31, 2027 (tentative) |
| International Master’s (IM) Progression Award | $4,000 per year (INR 3.82 Lakhs) | Students who advance from the IM pathway into a full master’s | Automatic on progression |
Assistantships are the largest source of graduate funding at Washington State University. A TA or RA appointment waives operating tuition, so the out-of-pocket cost drops to only mandatory fees and the semester stipend covers Pullman living costs.
Nominations come from the graduate coordinator or the funding faculty member. Indian applicants who flag a specific research fit in their statement of purpose surface earlier in departmental review. Voiland Engineering, agricultural sciences, and Murrow communication show this pattern most clearly.

India-Specific Scholarships at Washington State University
Washington State University does not run a scholarship reserved for Indian nationals. Indian applicants qualify on the same terms as other F-1 international candidates for every award listed in the UG and PG sections above.
For India-anchored funding routed through Indian foundations, the most useful pool for a Pullman-bound candidate is listed below.
| India-Based Award | Amount | Level | Deadline (2026-27) |
|---|---|---|---|
| JN Tata Endowment Loan Scholarship | Up to INR 10 Lakhs (interest-free loan scholarship) | PG and PhD abroad, any field | Tentative March 2027 (annual cycle) |
| KC Mahindra Scholarships for Post-Graduate Studies Abroad | Up to INR 10 Lakhs, top three awardees receive higher grants | PG only, any field | Tentative March 31, 2027 (annual cycle) |
| Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation Scholarships | Up to USD 100,000 (INR 95.45 Lakhs) toward tuition, living, one-way airfare | Master’s, MPhil, or full-fee doctoral programmes | Tentative March 25, 2027 (annual cycle) |
| Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship | 50% grant, 50% interest-free loan covering tuition and living | Master’s and select PhD applicants | Tentative March 31, 2027 (annual cycle) |
| Narotam Sekhsaria Foundation Scholarship | Interest-free loan up to INR 20 Lakhs | PG and PhD, any field | Tentative April 2027 (annual cycle) |
Every award above is decided in India and is portable to Washington State University once the applicant holds an offer letter. Stack any one of them with the International Academic Award and a departmental assistantship. That combination brings the net Pullman cost within reach of a normal Indian salary trajectory.
Washington State University PhD Scholarships
| Scholarship | Amount USD (INR) | Eligibility for Indian Applicants | Deadline (2026-27) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graduate Assistantship (TA or RA) | Stipend plus full tuition waiver, department-set rate | Admitted PhD applicant nominated by department or advisor | Rolling, most PhD programmes close December 1, 2026 or January 10, 2027 for Fall 2027 |
| WSU Graduate School Fellowships | Fellowship stipend plus tuition support, amount varies | Nominated by home department after admission | Rolling, tied to Graduate School review cycles |
| PNNL / WSU Distinguished Graduate Research Program | Fellowship with research funding at Pacific Northwest National Lab | Doctoral applicants in engineering, physical or life sciences | Tentative January 2027 (annual PNNL cycle) |
| ARCS Foundation Scholar Award | Fellowship funding, nominated by department | US-based STEM doctoral applicants routed via department nomination | Nominations open Fall 2026 |
| International Academic Award (Doctoral) | $2,000 per year (INR 1.91 Lakhs) | F-1 international PhD candidates who maintain 3.0 GPA | Automatic at admission where offered |
A funded assistantship is effectively the default expectation for a PhD offer at Washington State University. Most STEM departments will not extend an admission letter to an Indian applicant unless a stipend and tuition waiver package is already committed.
Fellowships from the Graduate School and PNNL layer on top of the base assistantship. They add a research allowance and, in the PNNL case, direct lab access. The full funding stack for a competitive Indian applicant can exceed the Pullman cost of living comfortably.
Here is what Indian PhD applicants should have ready during outreach to Washington State University faculty.
- A one-page research statement referencing two or three current papers from the target lab
- A CV showing publications, teaching assistantships, or industry research work
- Two academic referees primed to reply within 48 hours of a Graduate School request
- Transcripts converted to a 4.0 scale, ideally with a WES equivalence noted
External Government Scholarships for Washington State University Applicants
| Government Scholarship | Amount | Level and Eligibility | Deadline (2026-27) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship (USIEF) | Full tuition, J-1 visa fees, monthly stipend, one-way airfare, health cover | Master’s applicants with 55%+ in bachelor’s and three years of full-time work experience | Tentative May 15, 2027 (annual cycle) |
| Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowship | Monthly stipend, airfare, health cover for six to nine months at a US host | PhD scholars registered at an Indian institution | Tentative July 15, 2026 (annual cycle) |
| Fulbright-Nehru Postdoctoral Research Fellowship | Monthly stipend, airfare, health cover for eight to twenty-four months | Indian faculty and researchers with a PhD | Tentative July 15, 2026 (annual cycle) |
| National Overseas Scholarship (Ministry of Social Justice) | Full tuition, annual maintenance of USD 15,400 (INR 14.70 Lakhs), airfare | SC, Denotified Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic, and Landless Agricultural Labourer applicants for master’s or PhD | Tentative March 31, 2027 (annual cycle) |
| National Overseas Scholarship (Ministry of Tribal Affairs) | Full tuition, maintenance allowance, airfare, contingency grant | ST applicants pursuing master’s or PhD abroad | Tentative April 30, 2027 (annual cycle) |
The Fulbright-Nehru Master’s route is the most valuable single package on this list for Indian master’s aspirants heading to Pullman. Awardees receive tuition, a J-1 visa, monthly living support, and health insurance, which together clear almost the entire Pullman cost sheet for the two-year degree.
The National Overseas Scholarships from the Ministry of Social Justice and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs are underused by Washington State University applicants. Both cover full tuition plus maintenance. Each can be stacked with the International Academic Award, since the WSU award only waives fees rather than paying cash.
Reddit Insight: Fulbright-Nehru applicants report that the July internal interview round decides more offers than the primary written application. A Washington State University candidate should confirm two academic referees who can respond in the July 2026 window before locking in the May 2027 form.

Washington State University Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions
Ques. What is the maximum scholarship stack an Indian undergraduate can secure at Washington State University?
Ans. The realistic ceiling for an Indian freshman is $8,000 per year (INR 7.64 Lakhs). This stacks the $4,000 International Academic Award Level 1 with the $2,000 per semester Merit Award. Both awards are granted once the student clears 12 Washington State University credits and a 3.60 GPA in the first term. Adding the WSU General Scholarship pushes the total to around $13,000 (INR 12.41 Lakhs) in strong department cycles.
Ques. When should an Indian applicant start the scholarship process for Fall 2027 entry?
Ans. Start by August 2026. The WSU General Scholarship application opens in August 2026 with a priority date of tentative January 31, 2027. The International Merit Award has an August 1, 2026 deadline for the Fall 2026 term. Applicants targeting Fall 2027 should still track the August window for the following year. Fulbright-Nehru Master’s forms open around February 2027 and close tentative May 15, 2027.
Ques. Do Indian applicants need a separate application for Washington State University scholarships?
Ans. The International Academic Award and the International Year One Progression Award are awarded automatically with admission, so no separate form is required. The Merit Award, the WSU General Scholarship, and every external Indian award (JN Tata, KC Mahindra, Inlaks) need dedicated applications on their own portals. Assistantships require a nomination from the graduate department.
Ques. What GPA does an Indian applicant need for the top International Academic Award?
Ans. A cumulative GPA of 3.60 on a 4.0 scale qualifies for Level 1 at $4,000 annually (INR 3.82 Lakhs). Indian applicants converting from an Indian percentage or CGPA can generally clear this at 85% or a 8.5 CGPA on a 10-point scale. Anything between 3.0 and 3.59 qualifies for Level 2 at $2,000 annually (INR 1.91 Lakhs). Both levels require the F-1 visa and non-resident status through the full four years.
Ques. How does the Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship work for a Washington State University applicant?
Ans. The Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship pays full tuition, a monthly stipend covering rent and food, a one-way flight, and J-1 health insurance for two years. Indian applicants need 55% or higher in the bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant full-time work by the application deadline. The 2027-28 cycle closes tentative May 15, 2027, and USIEF interviews shortlisted candidates in the July to August 2027 window before releasing the final list.
Ques. Will the Washington State University scholarship stack cover Pullman living costs?
Ans. Pullman is one of the cheaper US college towns. Off-campus rent runs $600 to $900 per month (INR 57,270 to INR 85,905). Total living costs sit near $12,000 to $14,000 per year (INR 11.45 to INR 13.36 Lakhs). The undergraduate scholarship stack reduces tuition but does not pay cash, so Indian applicants should plan on personal funds or an assistantship for living expenses. A funded graduate assistantship, in contrast, pays a stipend that generally covers Pullman rent and food after tax.

- WSU provides plenty of cooperative courses with the nearby University of Idaho, which is located 9 miles away, giving you more flexibility with electives.
- WSU is a top-ranked university in the field of Agricultural sciences, by which departments under the College of Agriculture are heavily funded, including the School of Economic Sciences.
- Pullman, which is the main campus of WSU, is one of the safest college towns in the USA. Living expenses are also much lower than in other university towns in the same tier.
Dislikes
- Pullman is a small college town. The nearest big city is Seattle, which is 300 miles away(Roughly 6 hours drive)
- Comparatively higher tuition than neighboring colleges and colleges in the same tier as WSU.
- Not many major companies have their office at Pullman except SEL.
Scholarship
- I have not received any scholarships other than the tuition waiver and stipend I have received as a GRA. However, students without assistantships are eligible for scholarships up to $1000 per year, provided they maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher out of 4. My batch mates received at least $500 in scholarships per year.
- However, scholarships are not guaranteed and vary each year with the departmental funds and alumni contributions. Students are also encouraged to apply for the university's financial aid through the WSU general application process every year. International students are eligible for up to $4000 of tuition waivers upon being selected for university scholarships.
- I have opted for on-campus graduate housing. I have used WhatsApp groups for finding accommodation and a roommate. I live in a 2BHK townhouse. My monthly rent is $455. Electricity and wifi are separate. Water, laundry, and parking are included in the rent. Finding a roommate was the most challenging part.
- I have used the Indian Students Association WhatsApp group to find my roommate. WSU also provides a roommate finder website for this purpose. Graduate students may apply to WSU housing through the website. My accommodation is a 10-minute walk from the campus. WSU transport also runs buses to campus every 8 minutes on my route.

- Multidisciplinary nature of the programs where you get to interact with people in different streams and then comes the freedom to integrate those expertise in my own program. You get opportunities to be a multitasker with efficiency. You also get opportunities to interact and learn from real stakeholders that may directly benefit from my program.
- Yes, online platforms is a good way to find accommodation; monthly rents could be somewhere between $400 and $1000 per person in a 2 BHK; however, this may drop down if more people share apartments
It has been an amazing experience so far at WSU. I hope to contribute more to the university while learning.
Scholarship
I have received scholarships. Most scholarships are awarded once applying in your senior year of high school. I have a renewable one, which has helped a lot. But there aren?t a ton of them available once you are actually in college.
It felt like the right choice for the right price. I also felt like I would find a good community there and be able to have a good college experience. The school also gave me a good scholarship when I first applied.
