  5. Get official transcripts translated and, if needed, evaluated by ECE or WES.

  • UG Early Action: Decisions released by February 1, 2027, non-binding.
  • UG Regular Decision: Decisions released by April 1, 2027.
  • Graduate STEM Master’s: Rolling decisions from February to April 2027 by program.
  • Smith MBA and MS: Decisions issued within 4 to 6 weeks of each round close.

  • Deferral: Written requests to the program office for one term or one year, not guaranteed.

University of Maryland, College Park Documents Required

The document set for UMD centres on academic proof, English scores, financial support, and immigration paperwork. Indian applicants should keep certified translations of any non-English documents ready before opening the portal, as the review clock starts once you submit.

University of Maryland, College Park Documents Checklist

  • Passport with at least six months of validity beyond your intended stay.
  • Class XII marksheet plus UG transcripts and degree certificate for PG applicants.
  • Certified English translations for any document in a language other than English.
  • Third-party evaluation from ECE, WES, or JS&A for prior US college coursework if applicable.
  • Two LORs for UG, three for Master’s and PhD programs, one for MBA.
  • Statement of purpose or personal essay tailored to the program.
  • Current CV or résumé, especially for Master’s, PhD, and MBA applications.
  • Official IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or Duolingo score report sent through the testing agency.
  • Financial documentation showing one year of study expenses for the I-20.
  • Two passport-size photographs matching US visa specifications.

University of Maryland, College Park Acceptance Rate

UMD’s overall acceptance rate sits near 44 to 45% based on the most recent admissions cycle, making it moderately selective. UMD does not publish a separate international acceptance rate, and anecdotal patterns from Indian applicants suggest slightly tighter selectivity for high-demand programs. Track acceptance rate trends for the full context.

University of Maryland, College Park Acceptance Factors

  • Rigor of the Class XII or Bachelor’s transcript in the target field.
  • English proficiency at or above the published floor.
  • Program-specific prerequisites completed and shown clearly on the transcript.
  • Letters that speak to research, project, or professional capacity.
  • A statement of purpose that connects to identifiable UMD faculty or labs.

University of Maryland, College Park Program-Level Rates

MS Computer Science and MS Business Analytics run tighter than the institutional rate suggests, because Indian applicant volume concentrates on these two programmes. Indian STEM applicants who submit by the priority round with clean prerequisites and a research or project portfolio see the strongest yield.

Insider note: UMD’s 44% institutional rate flattens sharp program-level differences. Smith School Master’s programmes and MS Computer Science are meaningfully more competitive for Indian applicants.

The University of Maryland, College Park’s Fall 2027 cycle rewards Indian applicants who lock in IELTS 7.0, translated transcripts, and a focused SOP before the priority rounds close, and who use the Smith and Graduate School priority dates rather than the final March 13, 2027 window to keep merit funding in play.

Scholarship

  • Because it is a state school, most scholarships are need-based and for domestic students. However, department-specific scholarships are available in the range of $500 - $ 2000. For example, I received the Robert H. Smith Undergraduate Scholarship (BN46) Award for the 2024-25 Academic Year. This is merit-based, and I was awarded $10,000 for the full academic year by the Smith School of Business. You have to be a declared major in this school to be eligible to apply. I am estimating that I will get another iteration of this scholarship for the 2025-26 academic year.
  • For the class of 2026, no other international student from India has received a scholarship.
  • I am not fully sure how many students receive this scholarship, but an educated guess would say about 10-15 at max.

Scholarship

  • I did not receive any scholarships for my course. For business courses, scholarships are available depending on the achievements of the candidate. Moreover, when students pursue teaching assistantships and graduate assistantships, they will have the opportunity to reduce the overall tuition fee for their course. It is also possible to waive courses by doing startup innovation at UMD X Foundry.

Scholarship

  • A scholarship was being offered for my course. However, I did get a scholarship from ASU of USD 3000 and IUPUI worth USD 1500. Not sure about the criteria.
  • Although there was no scholarship for my course, some of the students from the other branches got a 2000 USD scholarship on the total fees. (which is not too much)
  • The only way to get any financial aid would be to get a role as a teaching or research assistant.
  • Only a handful of students get scholarships and only for the first year. I know one guy from MSCS who got a USD 2K scholarship.

  • There are no scholarships for my course. The data science program comes under the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS), and this school does not provide any scholarships for any of the courses under it.

Overview

I chose this university as this university is a public Ivy League school and is well reputed, plus the course it offered was among the top 10 schools in the USA. As stated earlier the program was a perfect blend of technical and non-technical subjects, something that I was looking for.
