Likes
- I really appreciate the University library resources which make research and study convenient.
- The on campus events are engaging and help students connect, learn and relax beyond academics.
- I also enjoy being part of diverse student clubs that encourage leadership, teamwork and cultural exchange they make campus life vibrant and fulfilling.
Dislikes
- The fees is a bit expensive where all the students cannot afford.
- The campus is huge which makes it to walk long distances.
- Nothing much. Other than these two I think rest all good.
- I found my accommodation through Whatsapp and Facebook groups where students post available rooms and housing options. The key is to start searching early, as good places fill up fast. It's important to communicate clearly with potential roommates about rent, utilities and living preferences before finalising anything. I recommend verifying all details and agreements in writing to avoid confusion later.

- Unpredictable weather in the DMV area is not for everyone
- More focus on Big 4 recruitment instead of investment banks
- Smaller alumni base in high-finance role, but it is getting better as newer classes are breaking into these industries
Course Curriculum

- The courses in economics are made to be challenging, with heavy focus on calculus and statistics. Programs such as Stata, R, and Python are routinely used as part of the curriculum, and there are assignments that require students to demonstrate proficiency in these softwares. Finance, on the other hand, is easier compared to economics. Most tests are a blend of theory and numerical questions, with hands-on experience in Bloomberg Terminal provided.
- The positive aspects of economics and finance would be that it provides real-world experience demanded by companies. Paired with the clubs and organizations on campus, it prepares people better for real-world cases in the job force. In my personal opinion, teaching economic theory is a little outdated but I can understand why it is essential to know the past which shapes the present and the future.
Fees
- Fees are charged in a mix of credit-based and semester-wise basis. Taking lower than 12 credits makes a student part-time, while there is a flat rate for 12+ credits. According to the Undergraduate Tuition & Fees website, the total tuition and mandatory fees for a semester total to $20,593. The mandatory fees include the costs of athletics, shuttle bus, student union, student activities, recreation services, student sustainability, and student counseling center. If enrolled in a Limited Enrollment Program (LEP) such as Business, Engineering, and Computer Science, students pay an additional $1,545.30, bringing the total fees per semester to $22,138.30.
- Monthly expenses are highly variable as it is contingent on standards of living that a student wishes to maintain. Rent ranges from $650-1400 per month depending on whether you have a shared room or a personal room and the total number of bedrooms in the apartment. Additionally, spending time with friends, going to DC, and going on dates could cost higher. If you are living on campus (which is mandatory as a freshman and optional and limited for later years), you are required to purchase a full dining plan, which currently costs $2,426.09 for a semester. There are also block meal options, allowing you to purchase 25, 50, 100, and 150 meals which cost lower. In my experience, I spend around $1000-1200 a month which included rent, utilities, meal plan, and miscellaneous expenses, which results in a total cost of $27,000 per semester. The cost of a flight to and back from India has not been included, which usually costs about $1600 for a round trip, again contingent on when the flight is being booked.

- Campus: UMD, being a public university, has a very vast campus. It must be around1500 acres in size. There are a lot of buildings giving off an old architecture kind of vibe which I like.
- Proximity to DC: Washington DC, the capital of United States, is just a 20 minute metro ride away from the university, which it makes it easier for students to make fun plans on the weekends, or show around the city to friends who are visiting..
- Facilities: The university has huge gymnasiums, numerous libraries, and dining halls with delicious foods. It can be overwhelming at first but eventually everything will make sense and be of good use.
Dislikes
- Lack of Jobs: If you are not a US citizen, this university won't be able to help you much in landing an internship or a job. In the career fairs, all of the government companies are present (due to the proximity to the white house, and parliament)
- Ghost Town: During summers and winter break it can get tough for international students as almost everyone is out of the city. If you have no plans to go out for a trip, it can be challenging mentally to be present here.
- Cold: College park gets pretty cold (not as cold as new york, but much colder than the west coast) and at times it just might be difficult to step out of the house during winters because of the snow.

- Lack of Teaching Assistantships and Research Assistantships due to preference to students enrolled in specific majors.
- More than half of the companies that come in career fairs are interested to hire US Citizens.

- The difficulty level of my course curriculum is medium to high. Overall, it depends on the individual's prior knowledge in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Up until my first semester, it has been a mix of both practical and theoretical aspects.
- The most positive aspects of the course that stand out to me personally are the interesting lectures given my world renowned professors.
- The negative aspect may be that classes are scheduled in the late evening and it might be colder during winter.
- Three classes are scheduled in a week. Timings would be around 6:00 PM to 8:45 PM. Depending on the section, times may wary. Sometimes, one can enroll for a class between 9:00 AM to 11:45 AM
- The average number of students in my class are 50
- Around 165 Indian students are enrolled in my course for the Fall Semester.

- The opportunity for research work in the desired field is very high, especially in case of Computer science we are provided with high compute infrastructure to perform the projects
- The awareness of students from the first year about the evolving job market and preparing according to it, keeps the atmosphere competitive
- Very nice career fair with upto 80 companies coming for Computer fair for one day and upto 300 companies for all major over span of 3 days,career fair happens once for each semester
Dislikes
- For international students there are limited part-times and very hard to get one
- some of the majors are crowded with 150 to 200 people per program in the masters degree
- The opportunity to get TA is very limited and restricted within in the home departments, unless you have a good contact with a professor and very good grades they cannot consider people outside of the program

- The course level of medium difficulty if you done an relevant subject in your undergrad i would just be an application related things of the concepts taught to us in the undergrad, the batch was diversed in terms of colleges and work experiences, most of the classes are schedules in the evening from 6 to 9 so as to support any students taking this course asides their current job.
Fees
- For my program the fee structure for two years is 40,000$ and insurance for every semester is around 1000$, other required fees for each semester is around 640$, my monthly expense for rent is 550$ and for food and travel and phone bill comes to be around 200-250$, me rent amount covers all other expenses like gas,electricity,wifi and all other stuff.

- Professors are mostly industry professionals because of which we get an up to date idea on how to use the topics being taught in class. We have a professor who worked at google for 10 years and is now a professor and he tells us a lot of insider stuff that you wouldn't have known about.
- The dining hall is very good; it has a variety of cuisines and is priced at USD 10.5 for an all you can eat buffet which is very economical. This is if you get a dining plan
- It is technically a college town which gives you a sense of collectivity or companionship no matter where you are on or around campus. Additionally, you can go to DC in 35mins using the metro so it does not feel isolated either. (you can enjoy the experience of a city campus too at some extent)
Dislikes
- The professors are working professionals so the classes are mostly in the evening. This can be a plus for some students but I'm not much of a fan of it. This is because sometimes the professors are tired and it feels gloomy to go to class in the evening.
- The housing is very expensive in this area; a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom costs USD 1300 per room. So, many students live quite far from campus in individual houses.
- The transit bus system is usually great and covers most areas. However, sometimes the buses are late or just don't show up, if you take the bus to class, it is not the most reliable option. It would be better to get an electric scooter.

- The difficulty is medium if you have done the same things in your undergrad. For others can be difficult for some topics.
- A lot of mathematics, which is a plus as it goes into detail of the topics but is also a negative if you are not that great at doing calculus or linear algebra.

- The transportation for buses is free all around town. Metro, on the other hand, is paid and takes USD 4 to go to Washington, DC. My monthly groceries come to be around USD 60 per month but that is because I use the dining hall more.

- High cost of living compared to other states.
- The university pantry can improve.
- Less emphasis on fests and extra activities.
- Students usually apply for accommodation online.
- There are two very famous apartments: Graduate Hills and Graduate Garden. They take online applications. Students can join WhatsApp groups to get more updates.
Challenges: These apartment gets a lot of applications. It is advised to apply early.
Recommendations: Connect with students who are already in the US.

- The campus is really beautiful and has diverse student population. Hence, there are many student organisations for everyone's interest
- The McKeldin library is one of my favourite places in campus. It is a huge library and literally has all the resources you need.
- The location of UMD is very close to Washington DC ( about 30 minutes by metro ).
Dislikes
- The campus is not surrounded with much shops. There are only two grocery shops around campus Lidl and Trader Joes at walking distance.
- There is always some construction work going on in campus and most of the roads are blocked throughout the year.
- As an international grad student, it is not easy to find a part time or a GA due to cohort size of grad students.

- The difficulty of the course is medium and consists of both the article and practical courses. For example, I have a principles of machine learning course this semester and it is a theory course; on the other hand, principles of data science is another course as a practical one, where I have to do a project.
- Positive aspects of my course are that it is very extensive and gives you real-time application of the subject and the negative aspect is that I feel it includes more current trend topics such as generative AI. I have three classes this semester, and these are scheduled three days a week. Usually the classes happen in the evening between 5 and 9pm. The average number of students in my class is around 50 and the number of Indian students enrolled would be around 35 to 40.
Fees
- The tuition fee is $4,146 per course and during the 2-year masters degree, we will need to complete 10 courses. So in total it would be $41,460 (just the tuition fee).
- I am staying in an apartment near campus and the rent for a shared room I am paying is $610 (I got it for an early bird discount). The minimum rent for an apartment is around $500 on an average and for a private room it is $900.
- The fees are charged semester-wise. For my particular course, I should take 9 credits per semester, which is 3 courses, so I pay $12,438 per semester.
- Transportation is completely free around campus. I mean the shuttle bus to the university and nearby places. If you want to go in the metro, its chargeable; on weekdays it's around $5 and on weekends around $2.5.
- Grocery shops are very limited around this area, with only 2 supermarkets. However, you can order online. On average, the monthly groceries for me are around $100. There is also a good Indian store near the university (20 minutes by bus).

The course curriculum is one of the best when it comes to colleges offering Information Systems in the USA. It is very well planned 16 month program such that it prepares you for the internship and full-time hunt.
Fees
The total tuition fee for my course was around 64,000$ back in fall 2021. This was just the tuition fees for the course which had 30 credits. In addition to that you have to take care of the other expenses such as rent, groceries, insurance etc. The fees now would be somewhere between 60 K- 70 K $.

- Good curriculum, great ranking, reasonable tuition fees, safe area, good alumni network
- Easy to blend in, great curriculum, good extra curricular activities present, good accomodation available, community is well knit, health center is available at a cheap rate
Dislikes
- Lots of students, so sometimes that becomes an issue, teacher to student ratio is not so high, good accomodation is available but it's limited so one has to be proactive
