What Students Say
Likes
- The Robotics program at UMD is one of the top in the US. The fees was also major factor in the decision to study at UMD. The faculty is very good as well as the choice of courses is very appropriate and in accordance with the industry standards.
- The University has a very reasonable tuition fee for MEngg programs considering it is also know as a “public ivy” because of its rank and reputation. The campus resources are abundant and free to use, ensuring a very active and good work life balance. The Engineering departments in particular have some of the most advanced labs and resources that might not be the case with some of the other universities in the area.
Dislikes
- The diversity in some of the programs is quite less. There are many South Asian students in Engineering programs so does not feel like an international program. The nearby areas like Baltimore are notorious for a high crime rate so a precautions are needed if you are going there.
Required Exams for Admission
My overall experience for UMD has been very pleasant, I am able to find some balance in the work-life balance and I am positive that this degree from UMD would be life-changing for me. The academics are very rigorous but there are plenty of resources to support your endeavor.
Course Curriculum
The curriculum is very relevant to the current industry standards. The M.Eng program is not a research-based degree so no research is part of the curriculum but there are plenty of research opportunities for those who are interested. The academics are quite rigorous, with lots of projects and assignments that impart practical as well as theoretical knowledge.
Faculty
The student-to-faculty ratio is quite good, each section has 20-35 students. Almost all of the professors also work in industry and have relevant experience to teach the subjects. This is very good for the development of in-demand skills. Most of the professors host at least one in-person office hour where you can meet them and discuss whatever you want to. Apart from in-person office hours, there are some online office hours where you can ask TAs as well as professors about your doubts about the subject. The professors are also easily reachable by email and the class discussion forum too. My Control Systems instructor Professor Waseem Mallik had a profound impact on my personality, apart from teaching a fantastic subject, he also motivates me to be a good student and an engineer.
Campus Life
The campus life is quite good, there are plenty of extracurricular activities to choose from, these activities range from trekking to singing and whatnot. If you are interested in an activity there is probably a club for that. I personally am part of the robotics club and affordable prosthetics club. There are also world-class sports facilities available such as the SECU stadium which hosts the football game with a seating capacity of more than 50,000 people. Other facilities include a basketball arena, baseball, swimming pools and a college gym facility. Talking about libraries, there are multiple libraries on campus. The largest of them, the McKeldin Library is really fabulous with lots of books and other facilities such as private and group study rooms, computer systems, printers etc. The whole campus is covered with high-speed WiFi internet accessible via student credentials. There are many research facilities on campus, personally, I have been to the Robotics and Automation Lab and the Neutral Buoyancy Research Facility which host some of the best infrastructure and equipment for research, this is the same for other departments and their research facilities.
Placement
Because of it's proximity to the Washington DC area, there are may federal companies that are looking to hire from UMD. Apart from them, UMD hosts multiple career fairs throughout the year so students can apply to many different companies. The data for placements can be found on the UMDs career website.
Accommodation
There are some facilities available for graduate students but they are scarce so most of the grad students stay off-campus in private properties which are abundant and easy to commute from. For undergraduate students the college has many dorms and hostels for accommodation.
Exams
GRE is optional but good to have. I had 154 on Verbal, 162 on Quant and 4.5 in Writing. TOEFL and IELTS are accepted for English proficiency. I had 111/120 in TOEFL. No SOP is required for M.Eng degree at UMD, but LOR and CV is required. Mentioning work experience and projects in the CV is a must. For LORs, the academic standing, work ethics and research should be properly appreciated by the recommender. No interviews were held.
Fees
The tuition fee is approximately $1065 per credit hour and you need to complete 30 credit hours for the degree so comes roughly to $35000 for the applied engineering department degrees. Apart from this if you are a graduate student you will be probably spending 900 - 1000 USD per month for living expenses.
Scholarship
No scholarships.
