Colleges Where I Was Accepted

Reason for choosing my college

  • I chose the University of Maryland over other colleges because of its diverse and inclusive community, strong academic reputation and proximity to the nation's capital, which offers excellent exposure and networking opportunities. The coursework is practical, industry-orientated and well-structured, aligning perfectly with my career goals.
  • Additionally, UMD provides tuition remission opportunities for assistantships. Hosts numerous campus events and fosters a vibrant student life. On a lighter note I've always liked the University's colors red, black and yellow which add to its energetic spirit.

Colleges Where I Was Rejected

Reason for Rejection

  • I couldn't secure admission to those colleges because I submitted my application after the priority deadlines, and by the time it was reviewed, all available seats had already been filled. So I would like to suggest to everyone to please apply early.

Tips to enhance your application

  • Be clear and honest about your goals, experiences and motivations. Highlight all achievements big or small, that reflect your growth, leadership and commitment. Tailor each document to the programme by explaining how your background aligns with its focus areas. Use specific examples to show your skills rather than just listing them. Most importantly, start early so you have enough time to proofread, refine and submit strong, well-organised materials before deadlines.

Admission Experience

  • I chose University of Maryland College park because of its strong academic reputations, high national ranking and industry oriented curriculum. The U.S offers world class research opportunities and practical learning experiences, which aligns perfectly with my career goals. UMD stood out for its well designed courses in software and data science, hands on projects and close proximity to Washington D.C providing access to leading companies, networking events and internships.
  • My overall experience has been exceptional the professors are supportive, the coursework is challenging yet rewarding and the diverse student community encourages collaboration and global perspectives. Beyond academics, I've enjoyed engaging in campus events, student clubs and social activities that foster both personal and professional growth.
  • The vibrant campus life, combined with opportunities for assistantships and tuition remission makes UMD a truly enriching and fulfilling place tot study.

Class Schedule

8

  • Typically, there are about three classes per week, most of which are scheduled in the evenings from 6 to 9 PM to accommodate graduate students. The average class size is around 40 students, with a majority being Indian students.
  • Apart from regular classes, I usually spend around 5-7 hours per week on assignments, projects and self study to keep up with coursework and reinforce key concepts.

Faculty

7

  • The faculty-to-student ratio is slightly high, but professors are very approachable and supportive. They are open to discussions beyond class hours and genuinely care about student learning.
  • Some faculty members also guide students with research opportunities and occasionally provide references for part-time or full-time roles. Overall, the professors are knowledgeable and encouraging, creating a positive academic environment.

Campus Life

10

  • There is only one campus which is huge, vibrant and full of energy. It offers excellent facilities, including one of the largest university libraries, modern sports complexes and health and counselling centres and various recreational spaces.
  • The campus hosts exciting annual events and fests, such as Maryland Day and Homecoming Art Attack, which bring together students from all disciplines.

Part Time Jobs

  • Most Indian students at UMD work part-time in on-campus roles such as dining services, catering, the shoemaker building, Terp Host positions, DOTS events or as referees for intramural sports at Clarice smith hall. These jobs typically pay between $15 and $18 per hour.
  • Getting such positions requires some effort and persistence, as they can be competitive at the start of the semester. The usual process involves applying through the UMD job portal, attending brief interviews and sometimes reaching out directly to supervisors in different departments.
  • Part-time opportunities at UMD are quite good. TA, RA, and GA roles offer excellent pay and valuable academic experience, though they are competitive and only a few students are selected each semester.
  • Other on-campus jobs, such as positions in dining services, libraries or administrative offices, typically pay between $15 and $18 per hour and can be obtained with some effort and networking.
  • Students are allowed to work a maximum of 20 hours per week during the semester, which helps balance academics and part-time work effectively.

Placement

7

  • Most students secure full-time jobs within 3 months of graduation. The average salary ranges from 70000-90000 with top offers in tech and engineering exceeding 110000.
  • Jobs are usually through campus career fairs, internships, referrals and strong employer network. The lowest salaries are around 55000 depending on the field.

Accommodation

Off Campus
6

  • I found my accommodation through Whatsapp and Facebook groups where students post available rooms and housing options. The key is to start searching early, as good places fill up fast. It's important to communicate clearly with potential roommates about rent, utilities and living preferences before finalising anything. I recommend verifying all details and agreements in writing to avoid confusion later.
