University of Maryland, Baltimore Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Indian applicants to UMB’s graduate school need a four-year bachelor’s degree with strong academics. English proficiency scores and a WES credential evaluation are mandatory for most programmes.

  • Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 minimum (School of Graduate Studies standard); PhD tracks expect 70% or above (recommended)
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 80, IELTS 7.0 or Duolingo English Test 115 (official UMB Graduate School minimums)
  • Credential evaluation: WES course-by-course evaluation required for most Indian transcripts; upload during application submission
  • Programme-specific: GRE required for MS Biochemistry, MMI and PhD biomedical tracks; MS Pharmacometrics and MS Forensic Medicine typically waive GRE for Fall 2027. Verify each policy against comparable universities in USA.

Key insight: UMB Graduate School accepts TOEFL iBT 80 and IELTS 7.0 as baseline, but MS Pharmacometrics and biomedical PhD panels routinely admit applicants with IELTS 7.5 or above. Aim for the higher band if the target programme page does not publish a specific override.

University of Maryland, Baltimore Acceptance Rate 2027

UMB reports an overall acceptance rate of 81% (estimated) across its graduate portfolio. Individual professional schools apply tighter admit rates, especially Medicine and Dentistry.

The Graduate School’s high overall admit rate reflects an intake weighted toward biomedical and health sciences applicants with clear research fit. School of Medicine’s MD programme admits below 5% of applicants. The DNP programme admits above 60% of qualified Nursing candidates.

Reality check: The headline 81% figure is skewed by open-enrolment certificates and post-baccalaureate tracks. Indian applicants targeting MS Pharmacometrics or MS Biomedical Sciences should treat the effective admit rate as 40% to 50% and strengthen their SOP research fit accordingly.

University of Maryland, Baltimore vs Peer Universities

UMB stands out for its exclusive health sciences and professional focus, allowing tighter industry pipelines than broader-portfolio state universities. Its subject-level top-25 positions in Dentistry, DNP, Pharmacy and Health Care Law offer specialised employer recognition. Broader-ranked peers cannot always match this depth in individual professional fields.

UMB fits Indian applicants targeting health sciences, pharmacy, dentistry, nursing, social work or law careers in the US. Programme investment of $110,000 to $190,000 (₹104 lakh to ₹180 lakh) against a median graduate salary of $83,634 (₹78.98 lakh) delivers strong ROI on STEM tracks. STEM OPT for MS Pharmacometrics and biomedical sciences remains UMB’s strongest Indian-specific work-study programs in USA advantage.

UMB does not suit Indian applicants seeking Engineering, Computer Science, Business or broad liberal arts programmes. Its portfolio locks around health, law and social sciences. Applicants targeting Engineering, CS or MBA should compare with University of Maryland, College Park within the same state system.
