Course Curriculum

10

  • The difficulty level is easy (on a scale of 1-10, I'd say 8) It is more oriented towards a practical approach
  • Positive aspect: Someone who has 0 knowledge can handle the course
  • Negative: Someone who totally knows the subject might not learn something new

Admission Experience

  • I applied to these colleges:
University of Maryland College Park (Admitted)
George Washington University  (Admitted with 50% scholarship)
Illinois Institute of Technology (Admitted with $12,000 scholarship)
Rochester Institute of Technology (Admitted to a different course (ECE) with 40% scholarship)
University of Alabama Birmingham (No update)
    NorthEastern University (rejected)

  • I believe I was rejected in NEU because I had no work experience in cybersecurity domain and I was trying to shift directly my field from Electronics and Telecommunications which is not directly related.

  • Total fees: $38,020 (Tuition fees + other fees)

    Tuition:        $1,175.00 per credit hour
    Fees:        $692.50 for full-time (9 credits)
    (Tuition x Credit Hours + Fees) Three courses: $1,175.00 x 9 = $10,575 + $692.50 = $11,267.50 (Fees for 1 semester)

  • Fees is charged semester-wise.

    Monthly expenses: $1070
    Rent: $750 (Including utilities)
    Groceries: $200
    Eating out: $60
Transportation: $0 (It is free here; UMD public buses)
    Miscleanneous: $60 (Haircut $30, Shopping)

  • Fall 2023. I wanted to directly do my master's after bachelor's.

Class Schedule

10

  • The usual timing is 7 to 9:40 or 4 to 6:40. 3 classes are scheduled in a week.
  • Usually it's spread out but there can be 2 classes on a single day
  • The average number of students in my class is 40
  • Indian students are 30-35

Faculty

10

  • 1:40. This ratio does not affect as it may look. The professors are one email or office hour away and it is easy to have a one on one conversation with them.
  • These professors are experienced individuals who work in the daytime at a company. So they bring industry experience with them and their teaching methods and examples can also help you in interviews.
  • Yes, I was a Teaching Assistant for a course and my professor has recommended me various times for finding an internship.
  • The faculty members I admire:
  • Prof Kevin Shivers (He is very expressive and he has been in this industry since it has started. He knows what he is talking!)
  • Prod Everett Daviage (He is funny and lenient. He can explain complicated concepts to you in a very easy manner. Not many professors can do this)

Campus Life

10

  • UMD has 4 campuses.
  • University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) - College Park, MD
  • University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) - Baltimore, MD
  • University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) - Catonsville, MD
  • University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) - Princess Anne, MD
  • University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) - Adelphi, MD (online-focused)

Part Time Jobs

  • If there are 100 students in a batch, by the end of 1st year, atleast 30-40 students will secure TA/RA positions.
  • Pay range varies from departments. TAs in Engineering department gets paid $12,000 for 1 semester + Tuition remission (of approx $12,000)
  • Dining Halls, Bike Shop, Fitness Center, Food chain shops or stores (inside University), DOTS (Driving cabs for handicapped throughout uni) are some other jobs available to students
  • The usual hourly wages for the above jobs are roughly around somewhere $ 16-19/hr
  • For international students on visa, the maximum hours of work allowed per week is 20
  • In the first semester it is impossible to secure any TA/RA job. From 2nd semester it gets easy to get a TA/RA/other on campus jobs.
  • $16/hr. In the first semester it is impossible to secure any TA/RA job. From 2nd semester it gets easy to get a TA/RA/other on campus jobs.  You should first visit the online departmental page where you intend to apply. They have a careers section, whenever a semester is about to end lookout for these pages as they start hiring for the next semester pretty early. Fill in those form, keep your resume's ready, and you will get an interview.

Placement

4

  • 60% for the batch 2022.
  • The average salary range is $70,000-$95,000.
  • Students usually find jobs through Linkedin, or Glassdoor. Most of the times internships are converted to full time offers.
  • My seniors have been placed in Apple, EY, Google, Amazon. But a very few number. Most of the students get placed in a mid size company which is unheard of internationally.

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • I joined each and every whatsapp groups associated with University of Maryland. On the group chat there used to be occasional posting by students when they have to sell/buy any items or even sublet their room. I approached a person who wanted to transfer his lease.
  • My monthly rent where I stayed for 1 year was $550. Utilities like water, electricity were included.
  • The only challenge I incurred was to pay a security deposit of $550 without actually seeing in real life how the apartment looks like. I had to confirm from a lot of sources that the apartment does exists and it is not a fake posting.
  • I would recommend upcoming students to get housing in area close to the campus. You will save a lot of time, and it will be much safer. Also, don't pay more than $900. It's easy to find a goof private room within $900.
  • My building (where my classes take place) is a 7 minute walk. Most of the Indian students stay in Graduate Hills, Hyattsville.

Exams

  • IELTS/TOEFL are required. GRE is optional
  • 1 SOP, 3 LOR's and 1 CV is mandatory
  • No interview is not part of the application process
