Colleges Where I Was Accepted

Reason for choosing my college

  • There were a lot of on-campus academic jobs available, the overall ranking of the university is good and the overall expense of the city (state college) is low, so basically you don't have to worry about the living expenses.

Colleges Where I Was Rejected

Reason for Rejection

  • The overall acceptance rate of the universities is very low, and thus the competition is really high and according to me, my CGPA was 8.93/10, which is a bit less for these universities and I didn't have any research papers published under my name.

Required Exams for Admission

TOEFL (116)
GRE (331)

Required Documents For Admission

CV

SOP

LOR

Tips to enhance your application

  • Only apply if you have a good GRE score. Try to customize your SOP according to the university, talk about the events hosted by the university and show that you are someone who is very focused on the fundamentals of computer science.

Admission Experience

  • The overall ranking of the university is pretty good, the research facilities are great and it is one of the most reputed universities in the USA.
  • The overall strength of international students is pretty good and it's not a university where people enroll just so that they can enter USA but they are here to really fulfill there dreams and yes, be careful because it's extremely cold.

Class Schedule

5

  • Generally, people take 3 subjects per semester and we can have around 6–9 classes per week depending on the course.
  • Class timings vary according to the course and for some courses we have more than one class timing to choose from but the early class can start at 9 am and the last class can be till 6 pm. Average class strength is around 30-40 people and the percentage of Indians in the university is very low, but specifically for masters in computer science, it's around 30-40%, We get a lot of assignments so the schedule is very tight as we also have to study for job opportunities

Faculty

7

  • The faculty is highly experienced and very resource-oriented. Professor Farooque Mahfuza is one of the good professors here, as she is very friendly with the students and has a lot of experience in her field.
  • Professors can help you get part-time jobs at the university campus; otherwise, they won't help you get a full-time job or internships.

Campus Life

10

  • Penn State has around 11 campuses, 1 major library and every department has it's own small library, multiple grounds for almost every sport. I am on the University Park campus, State College PA. There are a lot of clubs and many football games. The Gym facilities are also excellent and we have ice skating arena and almost all the sport grounds.

Part Time Jobs

  • Most of the Indian students are talented enough to work under a professor as a grader or learning assistant (pay is around 13-16$/h); some still work as a mess worker (pay is around 13$/h). Anyone can get a mess job; you just have to apply; they always have vacancies.
  • To get a job under a professor, you will have to mail them and apply on the Lion Path online.
  • There are a lot of graduate and Learning Assistant job opportunities but they will pay you from 13 to 16 dollars per hour. Getting a RA/TA is very difficult, especially these days, especially for masters students, impossible for undergrad and PHD students always have RA/TA as it is in there contract with the university. Mess work is around 13$/h , 20 hours maximum per week.

Placement

2

  • To get an internship is really hard. Around 10-20% get summer internships but around 70-80% of students get full-time jobs after there graduation. Salaries range from 80K to 200K per annum. Students mostly get jobs by applying online. The highest salary goes to $300k and lowest for software engineers can be around 70k.

Accommodation

Off Campus
7

  • You can go with university accommodation but it is a bit expensive, around 900–1100 dollars per month but off-campus is a bit cheap, 450–1200 dollars.
  • One can easily get off-campus accommodation by searching online. Too much paper work is required for leasing. One of the cheapest options can be Alight State College and the expensive ones can be The Point.
