- It gets super cold in the winters
Colleges Where I Was Accepted
Reason for choosing my college
- Pennsylvania State University is ranked 83rd worldwide; it has a huge campus and the biggest alumni network in the world. The city is small, and quite and quaint; the living cost is not very high. The air quality is amazing, and it's close to all the major cities and universities. The CS department here is super strong and well known.
Colleges Where I Was Rejected
Reason for Rejection
- There was nothing wrong with these colleges apart from the high competition. Carnegie Mellon University is ranked number 1 for computer science and getting in is pretty tough. You can select some similar major and still get in though.

Tips to enhance your application
- Focus mostly on the Statement of Purpose and the Letter of recommendations. Having high scores in IELTS and GRE also plays a major role in getting the admission.
- No extra documentation or verification of transcripts such as WES are required so that saves a lot of money.
Admission Experience
- My overall experience here is great; the university is super beautiful and the campus is huge. The reason I chose the US is for the quality of education that they offer and the high-paying jobs here.
- State College is in the heart of Pennsylvania and only about 3 to 4 hours away from cities like Philadelphia, New York and Harrisburg.
Class Schedule
- You would usually have to take 3 courses (3 credits each) per semester to maintain the full-time status; a total of 31 credits need to be completed for computer science.
- The class timings vary per subject and you would have only 3 classes per week, which you can plan accordingly. The Computer Science major consists of Indians and Chinese students for Masters, but that's not the case for Bachelors.
Faculty
- The student-to-faculty ratio is great; as I mentioned, we don't just randomly admit students in the CS department, so the students are fewer and there are more professors per student.
- The faculty are very approachable and also have office hours every week where you can talk to them and meet them personally.
Campus Life
- We have a lot of events going on all year; there are societies and clubs for cultural activities as well. There are many Indian events that take place here and celebrations of different festivals. During major festivals, you won't feel far from home.
- We have clubs like IGSA, SASA and many more. We have an amazing intramural building; name a sport, and they have it there.
Part Time Jobs
- Getting part-time jobs is super easy; we have many openings in our dining commons. There is 100% placement for part-time jobs, not necessarily with the department though. Nearly all the students in my department work as graders, LAs or TAs.
- The average pay for LA and graders is about 16 dollars per hour, while a full-fee rebate for TAs is along with a fixed stipend.
- Because of the cut in federal funding, getting TA is difficult for masters students; regardless, many get it. Getting campus jobs is super easy, and mostly all the students in my department have jobs, not necessarily as TAs but as graders or LAs.
- The typical pay for graders and LAs is 16 dollars per hour and for TAs, it's a full fee rebate for the semester along with a 2200 dollar stipend per month.
Placement
- You don't have full-time opportunities in the first 6 months; anyone who mentioned otherwise is lying. In the first year, you have to apply for internships, but getting an internship is the toughest part of being in the US; its draining and takes a lot of effort.
- Just keep applying every day; you might get one soon. Start applying as soon as you get here or even beforehand.
Accommodation
- You can look for apartments via Google or university living; the rent here is not high. You will find that mostly all Indians prefer to stay at Alight State College, so here you can build a strong community.
- The rent here is 549$ per month plus you have to pay for utilities, which would range from 40$ in the summers to 100$ in the winters. I would recommend booking apartments as soon as you finalize the college as the rent goes up later.
