What Students Say
Likes
- Flexibility in choosing courses.
- Ability to try out whatever courses I wanted for the first week, without them affecting my grades or billing.
- Huge push towards research, leading to collaboration with professors and fellow students.
Dislikes
- Slightly on the costlier side.
- Lack of RA opportunities.
- Too many research oriented and too few industry oriented courses when it comes to HCI.
Course Curriculum
- Curriculum is not too difficult, most of it is very practical with little to no examinations. Most courses, either involve building projects, or writing term papers. The more theory and research oriented courses may include weekly readings and presentations.
- Its mostly positive, as mentioned earlier, emphasis on projects, lack of examinations, and endless opportunities for research and collaboration have been very helpful to my journey.
- Currently I only have classes on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I have two classes that are each 1 hour 15 minutes long. On Fridays, I have one class that's 3 hours long.
Admission Experience
-
Penn State University: Admit
Arizona State University: Admit
Iowa State University: Admit
Rochester Institute of Technology: Admit
Georgia State: Reject
University of Washington: Reject
Indiana University Bloomington: Reject
University of Maryland College Park: Reject -
Potential reasons for reject: not too high undergrad GPA, suboptimal resume, little to no experince in applied major (UX/HCI)
-
Reasons for choosing Penn State:
- Perfect balance of specialization and also having a broad major (Informatics)
- Able to choose subjects from both HCI and Data Science
- Good research opportunities
- Good alumni network as well as university is well known in Industry -
Application Process:
- Applied in late Feb/ early March 2024
- Got back an admit in about a month
- Completed formalities (sending degree and verifying finances) to get I20 in a few weeks after that -
Eligibility Criteria:
- undergrad GPA >= 3.0/4.0
- no minimum criteria for other exams stated.
- toefl/ ielts required
- gre not considered - Overall Experience: Penn State was a last minute addition to the list of universities I was applying to. Since GRE was the best part of my profile, and Penn state was not considering it, I wasn't too hopeful. But luckily I got the admit.
- I applied to Fall 2024. I applied in this intake because fall intake is most popular among foreign grad students.
- I applied in late Feb/ early March. I then got an admit in a month or so. After sending my degree and verifying finances, I got my I20 in a few weeks after that. Sending the degree did not take too much time as I had already communicated with the registrar of my college before I started applying to send the soft copy of my degree once I started getting admits.
Faculty
- One faculty and 1-2 teaching assistants per class. 20-40 students in each class.
- The teaching faculty have complete control over how the course is structured, including the methods of evaluation. Since many of the students are not directly concerned with entering the industry, because of having plans of pursuing a phd, there is no specific push towards industry oriented skills. Of course, most of the skills learned are very important in today's job market.

Part Time Jobs
- Only one student I know in MS has RA. Most of my friends including me have the job of Instructional Assistant. The pay is 18 usd per hour, and the work is 20 hours per week. Other jobs offered at campus include dining, help desk, grading assistant, etc.
- All the non academic jobs are very easy to secure. For IA/TA/LA/RA we are required to give an English exam that judges our proficiency.
- Most students get paid about 10-20 usd per hour. Finding part time jobs is pretty easy, especially if its non academic. Academic jobs like TA/RA/IA/LA require you to give an English exam. Applications for non academic jobs is done through workday, where all the job listings are posted. Academic jobs however are allotted by the HR based on the availability.
Placement
- Not too aware of full time opportunities secured by the recent graduates. Average salary range might be around 100-150k.
- Most students look for jobs on LinkedIn, Indeed, Handshake.Penn State has a decent alumni network, so that usually shows up while applying to jobs on LinkedIn. Networking is key.
- I have seen graduates from informatics in Netflix, Google, Apple, etc.
Accommodation
- Got in touch with my current flatmates just a week after getting the admit. They introduced me to our current place.
- Monthly rent is 610. The flat is fully furnished and contains washer, drier, oven, microwave, fridge, dishwasher. Facilities include gym, clubhouse, swimming pool, free bus pass.
- My application got stuck as I had to get my guarantors changed. The rent charged is a lot less if you guarantor lives in the states. So make sure to give a US residing contact's name for guarantor.
- Its a 5 minute drive away from the campus. Lots of Indian. students in this housing.

Interview was not part of the application. Not just for this university, but for any university I applied to.
Fees
- We pay fee semester-wise based on the credits we have taken. Since I am enrolled in a 10 credit course, the first three semesters, where I enroll in 3 credits per semester, cost around 18-20k including insurance.
- My monthly rent is 610. Utilities in summer-fall cost about 20-40 per month. In winter, the utilities may go up to about 70-100 per month.Groceries cost around 200-300 per month. Transport is free as bus pass is included for free in my rental agreement. Total living expenses per month come out to about 800-1100 USD.
Scholarship
- Not aware of any students in MS Informatics being offered scholarships. Closest thing is Research Assistant, but even those are extremely rare as most Professor give out those positions to PHD candidates.
- I am aware of only one person in my social circle who has gotten funding as a Research Assistant. He doesn't have to pay tuition, and also gets some stipend on top.
