What Students Say
Likes
- The campus is really beautiful.
- The college town is very safe.
- The college is well renowned for no issues in visa interview/ immigration.
Dislikes
- The fees are still high even though it is a state university.
- The selection of courses are a bit limited.
- The college being in college town gets ghosted in the winter and summer breaks.
Course Curriculum
- The course curriculum is easy to medium. No courses are that time consuming. The professors and Ta’s are really helpful and actively respond to any query. It has theory along with some practical assignments. Being a MS course you should expect many paper readings and based on then the implementation. Positive aspects are that the course flexibility is great. The professors work on great research if you are interested you can work with state of the art technologies in the latest works.
- A negative aspect is that some of the courses do not have exams. So no exams tend to change students' perspective in studying less theory and focus on other things. Classes are scheduled mostly in the afternoon. In spring I have noticed quite a few classes in the morning as well. Mostly between 1pm to 5pm. The average number of students in a class is 35-40. Around 15 Indian students out of 40 in my course. As compared to other universities the number of Indians is quite less and you get to see the real blend of international students here.
Admission Experience
-
Applied into:-
-
Northeastern university at Boston - Admitted
-
The Pennsylvania State University - Admitted
-
University of Texas at Dallas - Admitted
-
University of Wisconsin at Madison - Admitted
-
I think I was admitted to all the universities I applied to due to my high GPA and my brilliant SOP. I had extracurriculars and managed to shortlist and apply to only the universities I felt were the best for me.
-
I chose Penn state university because of its great reputation. It had a great alumni network. It is a public ivy and provides great course flexibility. As far as I know, PSU does not have a GRE criteria. It has a minimum 80+ in TOEFL criteria. The overall admission experience was really great. The steps for admission were: submission of application form along with TOEFL official marksheet submission.
-
The location of the University also played a huge part in selecting PSU, being close to 4 major cities namely New York, DC, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia. The location is always important in job perspective, so being located near the IT- HUBon east coast, PSU was the best option.
-
For the Fall 2024 intake, I submitted my application in November 2023. I received my admission decision in February 2024. The timeline may vary for different applicants, so it’s always good to check with the university for updates on application review and decision timelines.
-
This is the traditional timeline that I know off. The last date to apply was 1st March 2024. After receiving my admit I was not asked to pay any fees to reserve my place which was a good thing. The application process was real smooth and usually if you apply by end of November there are chances you can hear back your decision by late jan or early feb.
Faculty
- The faculty to student ratio is 1:8. I feel it is really great ratio. The quality of education is definitely positively affected. The professors are able to talk with each and every student in the class and answer their doubts. The teaching methodology is really good. The faculty members help the student by giving them TA part time roles.
- The academic part time role is anytime beneficial for a student. They are able to concentrate more on their projects and assignments while working as a TA.I really admired Professor Silverman who is a great professor. He is a statistician and a great professor. He was my professor for Data Mining course. He really understands the students and how to grasp their attention for 1 hour lecture. He made the data concepts clear using various methods and helped the students after lecture to understand certain topics.
Campus Life
-
All Campus:- University Park,Abington,Altoona,Beaver,Behrend (Erie),Berks,Brandywine,DuBois,Fayette (Eberly),Greater Allegheny,Harrisburg,Hazleton,Lehigh Valley,Mont Alto,New Kensington,Schuylkill,Scranton,Shenango,Wilkes-Barre,York.

I am in the university park campus. It has great recreational activities. The worlds third largest football stadium is Beavers stadium home to the PSU football team. It hosts a lot of matches which is a source of entertainment for the 100,000 fans visiting each and every game. PSU is a sports school and has great facilities.
Part Time Jobs
- Getting a TA is relatively easier. There are TA,RA,DA positions. The pay range is 18 dollars per hour. There are various on campus jobs like dining, IT jobs, reception, cafe jobs. For non academic jobs the pay is from 10 to 15 dollars per hour. Maximum hour is 20 hours per work. It is relatively easy to get on campus job. It is comparatively easy to get a part time opportunity here.
- Most of the Indian students obviously prefer working as a TA. Academic job is always the priority for any student. But many Indian students also prefer working in the dining halls because they get to eat free food and have another meal at just $2.00 as compared to the $13 for other students so most of I have seen many Indian students work in their dining or cafeterias. But the Indian students are mostly try for academic jobs like teaching assistant or research assistant as they are able to work on their own projects and assignments as well as do the grading. The dining job is quite tiresome as you need to stand for your shifts for three to four or even 5 hours and after the dining jobs most of the students feel very tired and that is one of the reasons people also try to avoid dining jobs.
Placement
-
So after completing my course there are various opportunities to work as a data scientist a data analyst, our business analyst or business intelligence.
-
The course allows to choose any subject from any department so depending on the courses you have taken you can alter the masters program and find the respective job I have seen people who get courses from the Business School and go into management positions.
-
I have seen people taking courses from the from the computer engineering school and get into technical jobs. So this course is quite flexible and allows students to choose their own major altering their flexible curriculum and target their specific job that they intend to in
data cybersecurity, management, engineering positions.
Accommodation
- I found the accommodation online with the help of my seniors. My monthly rent is 600 dollars. The included facilities are wifi, bus pass, electricity. Recommendations for future students is to start finding places as soon as you get the admit.
- The good places tend to run out. So be proactive, connect with people and get your living situation sorted out with the help of current/ existing students.
Exams
- So for the admission process, I was asked to submit 2 letter of recommendations, SOP, Transcripts and application fee of 65$. I was also asked to send the official TOEFL score. GRE was not mandatory.
- It was optional meaning that if you scored well you could send it to them as a positive aspect in your profile. The admissions start from october and last date to apply for me was 1 st march 2024 (fall 2024 intake).
Fees
- So the fee is 18,000 USD (with health insurance) per semester. So 65000 USD for the entire two year course (30 credits). The credit based fees is 1975 dollars per credit.
- The monthly expenses are around 600 for rent and 250 to 300 USD for groceries. You should also keep 50/100 USD expense as miscellaneous. So you should account around a 1000 dollars per month.
Scholarship
- No scholarships for my course. You can search for various available scholarships but the Pennsylvania state university does not provide any for my course. None of my batch mates received any scholarships.
- You can get part time jobs to support yourself. But no official scholarship. The scholarships are not that common here. You can get your tuition waived off if you work as a Research Assistant under a professor (which is really rare) for MS students.
