Earth Science: Which is better at the IIT Roorkee: geological technology or geophysical technology?

Before I talk about the credibility of both branches, let’s understand the basic difference between them. Geology is basically an observational science that tries to explain various phenomena and processes taking place at or near the surface of the Earth. On the other hand, Geophysics uses physical tools like Gravity, Potential, Seismic, Magnetic, etc. to study the interior of the Earth. It’s more like a branch of Geology itself. The coursework in Geological technology covers topics related to rocks, minerals, ores, volcanoes, mountains, oceans, glaciers, sediments, petroleum reservoirs, landslides, earthquakes, geoinformatics, and much more. The curriculum is similar to that of Applied Geology. The coursework in Geophysics comprises basic geological concepts along with detailed Geophysics concepts. Both branch students can opt for interdisciplinary courses as departmental electives. This initiative helps the students to gain an overall knowledge of Earth Sciences. Placements-wise, both offer similar opportunities with the core recruiter being the same; the Energy Sector - Oil and Coal industry. Mineral exploration also offers core jobs to these two branches. The opportunities offered are equal and any difference stems from the individual's performance and not the branch’s credibility. The majority of students are inclined towards research with the Geology students having an edge over Geophysical students in this aspect. For those seeking a management position or preparing for IAS, these two branches are the best owing to their light workload.

Is it true that the average placement of IIT Roorkee in geophysical technology is more than 15 LPA?

The placement scenario of Geophysical Technology (GPT) at IIT Roorkee can be broadly discuses under core and noncore placements Core Owing to a small batch size in comparison to other branches, the overall average is higher. The range of packages offered by the recruiting companies is also wide. The highest core recruiter is Schlumberger which offers packages around INR 32 LPA to 3-4 students every year. Other Oil giants include ONGC and IOCL which offer packages in the range of 10–11 LPA. Non core Non core jobs are in plenty not only for GPT students but students of all other branches as well. The sectors in which these jobs are offered include Consultancy Management Trainee Operations Business Analyst/ Data Analyst Marketing Teaching sector Data Scientist Coding Most of these jobs can be secured with good aptitude skills while coding and Data Scientist specifically require programming skills.

Should I take IIIT Allahabad IT for 5 years or IIT Roorkee GPT?

If I leave my biases towards Allahabad as a city aside. I would choose IIT Roorkee over IIIT Allahabad. Here are some reasons in support of my decision:- The IIT brand that gets attached to you is an asset that shall forever remain worthy. IIT Roorkee's GPT is an exclusive division that delves into geophysical survey methods and their use. Older IITs like Roorkee boast a longer legacy and are highly esteemed for imparting quality Engineering education. IIT Roorkee GPT has an Average Package of 14 LPA while IIIT Allahabad IT is at 20 LPA. IIT Roorkee has better infrastructure and a bigger campus of 358.5 acres compared to the100 acres of IIIT Allahabad. IIT Roorkee is ranked 5th in the NIRF ranking while IIIT Allahabad is ranked 89th.

Fees and Financial Aid:

My fees every year as a general student amounts to 2.8 lakhs per year including hostel and mess fees, out of which 1 lakh is the tuition fees per semester, hence 2 lakh is tuition fees per year, for sc/st categories their is no tuition fees. Their are many scholarships available for students whose family income is less than 7-8lakhs , other than that , their is one reliance scholarships 40,000 per year, for students with family income less than 15 lakh.

The exams started very early just after one month of arrival.

The fees is not increased from the past year and yearly fees is about 250,000 rupees . The fees structure is follows as: *For general: Tution fees-100000rupees/sem Registration fee- 35000rupees Other charges -5000rupees/sem Mess charges- 40000/sem Hostel charges -10000/ sem *For sc/St: Tution fees-0 Registration fee- 17500rupees Other charges - same as general Mess charges -same as general Hostel charges- same as general Scholarships are for economically backward classes. Like full tution waiver .

I belong to general ews category and family income 6lakh-8lakh Tution fee(year)-2lakh Hostel fees (year)-70000approx Miscellaneous charges (year)-25000approx Electricity charges -10000 I am not availing any kind of fee waivers Fee waivers is for the sc,st , for people of sc,st community tution fee is completely waived irrespective of their parent income Students of general,ews,obc category fee waiver is given on the basis of parents income If parents income is less than 1 lakh complete tution fees is waived If parents income is between 1 lakh and 5 lakh 2/3 tution fee is remitted Many scholarship are offered by college but in almost all the scholarship their is criteria of parents income less than 5 lakh which make no sense Suppose if someone parent is earning 6lakh per annum,3 lakh per annum of their 1 child is given to college only 3 lakh is left.if they have other children how can they afford their education and their expenses.

IIT Roorkee Review

Look the fees in IITs is average you can expect from a college. My course fee is around 2.8 lakh rupees per annum ( one year or 2 semesters). There are a lot of scholarships provided at IIT Roorkee. Also, you can get an interest-free loan for each and every IIT from a government scheme. Also, there is a tuition fee waiver for economically backward classes depending on their annual income. Also, there is a scholarship depending on your academic performance so if you are good in academics and need financial assistance you can get scholarships easily. Also, there is a scholarship name James Thomas scholarship based on your JEE advance, the student who has ranked below 250 and gets admission to IIT Roorkee is eligible for this scholarship. About the Campus jobs and internships, if you have skills you will definitely get placed. There are a lot of companies including Microsoft, uber, sprinklr etc (some big companies )which come in intern and placement season and take tests and interviews.

Course Curriculum Overview:

Depends on the course which you have opted for. Most of the courses have a structured syllabus which helps in in-depth knowledge of the subject. Industrial exposure was limited as there were not many on campus opportunities, connection with the alumnus help in getting the required industrial exposure. Faculties supervised the students well throughout the year.

IITR : The college of many dreams

Every student with family income less then 5LPA, are provided with 1/3rd tution fee wavier. Institute provides Rs.25000/- per month stipend to students with AIR less than 250 in JEE Advanced. Apart from these various alumni scholarships are provided to meritorious students of different departments.

James thomson scholarship. For this ur, gen rank must be under 300, if it's so then will get a monthly scholarship of 30000. MCM. For students with a low financial situation, if ur family income is less than 1 lakh then ur tution fees 1 LA will be waived off.
