SRIHER M.Sc Clinical Psychology FAQs

Ques. Is M.Sc. Clinical Psychology sufficient to practise as a Clinical Psychologist in India, or do I need M.Phil. after this?

Ans. M.Sc. Clinical Psychology alone is NOT sufficient to independently practise as a Clinical Psychologist in India. The Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) mandates an M.Phil. in Clinical Psychology (2-year programme) as the minimum qualification for RCI registration and independent clinical practice. However, M.Sc. Clinical Psychology is an excellent and often preferred pathway to gain the foundational knowledge and clinical exposure needed to qualify for and succeed in M.Phil. programmes. SRIHER itself offers an M.Phil. in Clinical Psychology (RCI-recognised), making it a natural progression for M.Sc. graduates.

Ques. What is the difference between M.Sc. Clinical Psychology and M.Sc. Medical Psychology at SRIHER?

Ans. Both programmes are offered under the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences at SRIHER. M.Sc. Clinical Psychology focuses on mental health settings, dealing with psychiatric disorders, psychopathology, and psychotherapy, and is designed as a pathway to M.Phil. Clinical Psychology. M.Sc. Medical Psychology, on the other hand, focuses on psychosomatic and somatoform disorders in general hospital settings, catering to patients with lifestyle diseases and medical conditions. The choice depends on whether a student wants to work in psychiatric/mental health settings (Clinical Psychology) or general hospital/medical settings (Medical Psychology).

Ques. What career options are available after M.Sc. Clinical Psychology from SRIHER?

Ans. With M.Sc. Clinical Psychology, graduates can work as Psychology Associates or Junior Psychologists in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, NGOs, and corporate wellness programmes under the supervision of RCI-registered Clinical Psychologists. They can also work as counsellors in schools, colleges, and community mental health centres. For independent clinical practice and higher-level roles, pursuing M.Phil. Clinical Psychology (RCI-recognised) is strongly recommended. Many graduates also pursue PhD programmes in psychology or related fields.

Ques. Does the M.Sc. Clinical Psychology programme at SRIHER include practical clinical training?

Ans. Yes. The programme includes Clinical Rotations in Semesters I and II, providing hands-on exposure to clinical settings within SRIHER's 2,500-bed teaching hospital, which has dedicated psychiatry and mental health departments. Semester III includes Guidance and Counselling Skills Practicals and Project Seminar and Case Studies, while Semester IV includes a full Dissertation. This structured clinical training is a key strength of the programme.

Ques. Can I apply for M.Sc. Clinical Psychology at SRIHER if I have a B.A. in Psychology from a distance education university?

Ans. No. The eligibility criteria specifically require a B.A. or B.Sc. in Psychology studied in regular mode (not distance education) from a UGC-recognised university. Candidates with distance education degrees in Psychology are not eligible for this programme. This is a standard requirement for clinical psychology programmes in India, as the RCI and most universities require regular-mode psychology degrees for admission to clinical training programmes.

Ques. What is the scope of M.Sc. Clinical Psychology in India given the growing mental health awareness?

Ans. The scope for clinical psychologists in India has expanded significantly with the Mental Healthcare Act 2017, which mandates mental health services in all government hospitals, and the growing awareness of mental health issues post-pandemic. Demand for trained mental health professionals is rising in hospitals, corporate wellness programmes, schools, rehabilitation centres, and telehealth platforms. However, for independent clinical practice, the M.Phil. Clinical Psychology (RCI) remains the gold standard. M.Sc. graduates from reputed institutions like SRIHER are well-positioned to secure supervised roles and gain the experience needed for M.Phil. admission.
