Ques. When are the Summer Internships are announced at IIST?
Ans. IIST invites exceptional undergraduate and postgraduate students from Indian institutions/universities/colleges to engage in internships and research endeavours on its state-of-the-art campus. Through the Summer Internship, Year-Round Internship/Project, and PhD. Visiting Schemes, participants in science, engineering, technology, humanities, and related disciplines collaborate with esteemed faculty on groundbreaking research, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in cutting-edge facilities. Every year, the summer internship project will be announced in March, with the internship period taking place from June to July. The maximum duration of the internship is two months, and the minimum duration of the internship is one month. All the topics and the required number of summer internships will be announced on the webpage. Interns will directly apply through the portal. Selection will be done by the concerned faculty supervisor of the department. The selection list will be announced on the same portal. Only the selected students will receive an offer letter from the Dean of Student Activities.
Ques. What is the PhD Visiting Students Scheme at IIST?
Ans. IST offers avenues for collaborative research for PhD students from other institutions through the PhD. Visiting Students Scheme. The student can find the IIST Faculty with matching/complementary research areas. With the endorsement of his PhD supervisor and after mutual agreement with his supervisor and the faculty at IIST, the student can apply through the portal on the IIST website, which will remain open year-round. The application requires a detailed work plan to be carried out at IIST. Faculty at IIST will endorse the applicant’s visit and forward it to the internship committee for approval. The student will receive the confirmation letter from the Dean of Student Activities for planning the visit. PhD students affiliated with an Indian institution, university, or college will be considered for visits lasting between 1 and 3 months. The student has to submit an Endorsement Certificate for the visit from the student's parent institution, and the detailed research plan, duration of the visit, and intended use of IIST facilities, such as laboratory equipment, must be provided.
Ques. How Hostels at IIST are Administered?
Ans. The hostel system is administered under the guidance of the Registrar and the Dean (Student Activities, Student Welfare and Outreach), who serve as the apex authorities. The Deputy Registrar (Student Welfare and Outreach) oversees day-to-day operations with support from five Assistant Hostel Managers, two Hostel Supervisors, and Hostel Attendants. Each hostel is also supported by a Resident Faculty Warden, a faculty member residing on campus, to ensure closer engagement with the student community. To further personalise student support, a Council of Wardens has been established, assigning two faculty members to each hostel. This system fosters a strong sense of community and well-being, while also ensuring timely coordination with units such as the Civil Maintenance Division, Networking Division, etc., for attending to student complaints. The wardens play a crucial role in addressing student concerns, maintaining discipline, and upholding the Institute’s code of conduct within the hostels, contributing significantly to the holistic development and welfare of students during their stay at IIST.
