NITK Surathkal B.Tech Chemical Engineering FAQs

Ques. Is Chemical Engineering at NITK Surathkal a good choice for placements, or should I prefer CSE/ECE?

Ans. Chemical Engineering at NITK Surathkal has a solid placement record with an average package of around Rs. 13 LPA and a placement percentage above 85%. While CSE and ECE branches tend to have higher average packages due to IT sector demand, Chemical Engineering students at NITK get placed in core sectors like oil and gas (Reliance, ExxonMobil, HPCL), pharma (Dr. Reddy's, Lupin), FMCG (HUL, PepsiCo), and analytics/consulting (ZS Associates, Mu Sigma). If you have a genuine interest in core chemical engineering roles, NITK is one of the best NITs for this branch.

Ques. What is the JEE Main rank required to get Chemical Engineering at NITK Surathkal?

Ans. Based on JoSAA 2025 data, the General category (Other State) closing rank for B.Tech Chemical Engineering at NITK Surathkal was approximately 18,000-19,000 in the final rounds. Home State (Karnataka) candidates typically need a rank in the range of 13,000-18,000. OBC-NCL candidates can expect admission with ranks up to approximately 7,000-8,000. These figures vary each year, so always check the official JoSAA closing ranks for the most recent year.

The hostel rent for shared accommodation is Rs. 8,820 per semester (inclusive of water and electricity charges). The campus is located near the Arabian Sea, and the hostel life is considered one of the highlights of studying at NITK.

Ques. Can Chemical Engineering students at NITK switch branches after the first year?

Ans. Yes, NITK Surathkal has a branch change policy that allows students to apply for a branch change after the completion of the first year, based on their CGPA. The process is competitive, and students need a high CGPA (typically above 9.0) to be eligible for popular branches like CSE or ECE. The number of seats available for branch change is limited, and the policy details are announced by the Academic Office each year.

Ques. What higher study options are available after B.Tech Chemical Engineering from NITK Surathkal?

Ans. Graduates can pursue M.Tech at NITK itself in specializations like Industrial Biotechnology, Industrial Pollution Control, and Chemical Process Design. Many students also appear for GATE to pursue M.Tech at IITs or other NITs. A significant number of students opt for MBA (CAT/GMAT), MS abroad (GRE), or directly join the industry. NITK's strong alumni network and research environment also support students interested in PhD programs at top global universities.

Ques. Are there any research or internship opportunities for B.Tech Chemical Engineering students at NITK Surathkal?

Ans. Yes, NITK Surathkal has a well-equipped Central Research Facility (CRF) and departmental labs that support undergraduate research projects. NIT Surathkal: 3 Answered Questions

What is the cutoff at NIT Surathkal for an MBA course?

Sayantani Barman
Arindam ChakrabortyStudied at National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal

NIT Surathkal offers candidates a full-time 2-year MBA program the total fee of which is INR 2.5 lakhs. To be eligible for this program, you must have completed your bachelor's with at least 50% marks or 5.5 CGPA from any recognized university. Additionally, you will have to appear for CAT, MAT, and XAT. The institute does not release the exact MBA cutoff but here is a vague idea for you

The minimum CAT percentile required to get admission in the MBA program of NIT Surathkal is 80 percentile.

  • General Category: 80-85 percentile
  • OBC category: 70+ percentile
  • SC and ST category: 65 percentile

However, I am strongly against you joining this institute as its MBA program has no value. Go to a full time-dedicated MBA B-school, and not a department of any Government college. It will help you save money and time.

How good is the MCA course at NIT, Surathkal?

Shikha GhosalStudied BTech in Computer Science, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (2019)

The MCA program at NIT Surathkal is decent but I feel NIT Allahabad will offer a better course and opportunity. This is because, at MNIT Allahabad, most companies allow MCA students to sit for placements with CSE and IT students. One of my distant cousins pursuing an MCA from MNNIT Allahabad cleared Google Mt.View. Moreover, CSE, IT, and MCA share a common department here and the computer Club classes are also held for all CSE, IT, and MCA combined.

Whereas In NIT Surathkal, the MCA program is inclined more toward Application Development and thereby focuses more on the latest programming language and tools to develop better and faster applications. Its primary aim is to provide a modern, industry-oriented education in applied computer science.

In my opinion, you should choose MNNIT Allahabad for MCA as it has better placement opportunities.
