B.Tech Mining Engineering at NIT Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal is a 4-year full-time undergraduate programme offered by the Department of Mining Engineering, established in 1960. The programme covers core areas such as rock mechanics, mine planning, drilling and blasting, mineral processing, mine safety, and environmental management. The total fees for the programme amount to approximately Rs. 3.30 lakh for day scholars and Rs. 3.65 lakh for hostellers (excluding mess charges) over 4 years, based on the 2026-27 fee structure. Admission is through JEE Main scores followed by JoSAA centralised counselling. The programme has a total seat intake of 58 seats (including all categories). It is a regular on-campus full-time programme and is popular due to NITK's strong industry connections with mining majors like Coal India, NMDC, ONGC, and UCIL, and the institute's NIRF Rank 10 in Engineering.

Admissions for the 2027-28 batch are upcoming. JEE Main 2026 Session 1 was held in January 2026, and Session 2 is scheduled for April 2-9, 2026. NITK Surathkal B.Tech Mining Engineering FAQs

Ques. Is Mining Engineering at NITK Surathkal a good choice? What are the career prospects?

Ans. Mining Engineering at NITK is one of the better options in India given the institute's reputation and industry connections. Graduates are recruited by PSUs like Coal India, NMDC, UCIL, and MOIL, as well as private companies like Vedanta and Tata Steel Mining. Many students also crack GATE for M.Tech or appear for UPSC/IES. The department has strong alumni in the mining and energy sector. However, the branch has fewer seats (58 total) and is a niche field, so students should have a genuine interest in the mining/minerals domain.

Ques. What is the JEE Main rank required for Mining Engineering at NITK Surathkal?

Ans. Based on JoSAA 2025 data, the closing rank for Mining Engineering (Home State - Karnataka, Gender Neutral, OPEN category) was around 39,455 and for Other State quota it was around 39,455 as well. OBC-NCL and SC/ST categories have higher closing ranks (lower numbers). These ranks vary each year, so candidates should check the official JoSAA website for the most recent round-wise closing ranks.

Ques. Can I change my branch from Mining Engineering to CSE or other branches after the first year at NITK?

Ans. No. NITK Surathkal discontinued branch change from the 2023 admission batch onwards. Students admitted in 2023 and later cannot change their branch after the first year. This is a permanent policy change decided by the Institute Senate.

Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for Mining Engineering students at NITK?

Ans. NITK Surathkal has hostel facilities for both boys and girls. While the institute generally accommodates all students, hostel allotment is subject to availability. First-year students are typically given priority for hostel accommodation. The hostel fee for 2026-27 is Rs. 13,310 for new admission (odd semester) plus a mess advance of Rs. 22,000 per semester.

Ques. Does NITK Surathkal accept DASA/NRI quota for Mining Engineering?

Ans. Yes, NITK Surathkal accepts admissions under the DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad) scheme for NRI/PIO/OCI candidates. The tuition fee for DASA students is USD 4,000 per semester for Non-SAARC countries and USD 2,000 per semester for SAARC countries. Admissions under DASA are handled separately from JoSAA.

Ques. What is the difference between the Karnataka Home State quota and Other State quota for Mining Engineering at NITK Surathkal?

Ans. NITK Surathkal, being located in Karnataka, has a Home State (HS) quota where 50% of seats are reserved for Karnataka domicile students and 50% are for Other State (OS) students. For Mining Engineering, there are 29 seats each under HS and OS quota. The closing ranks for HS and OS categories differ, with HS typically having slightly different cutoffs. Candidates must select the correct seat pool (HS or OS) during JoSAA counselling based on their domicile state.

NIT Surathkal: 3 Answered Questions

What is the cutoff at NIT Surathkal for an MBA course?

Sayantani Barman
Arindam ChakrabortyStudied at National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal

NIT Surathkal offers candidates a full-time 2-year MBA program the total fee of which is INR 2.5 lakhs. To be eligible for this program, you must have completed your bachelor's with at least 50% marks or 5.5 CGPA from any recognized university. Additionally, you will have to appear for CAT, MAT, and XAT. The institute does not release the exact MBA cutoff but here is a vague idea for you

The minimum CAT percentile required to get admission in the MBA program of NIT Surathkal is 80 percentile.

  • General Category: 80-85 percentile
  • OBC category: 70+ percentile
  • SC and ST category: 65 percentile

However, I am strongly against you joining this institute as its MBA program has no value. Go to a full time-dedicated MBA B-school, and not a department of any Government college. It will help you save money and time.

How good is the MCA course at NIT, Surathkal?

Shikha GhosalStudied BTech in Computer Science, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (2019)

The MCA program at NIT Surathkal is decent but I feel NIT Allahabad will offer a better course and opportunity. This is because, at MNIT Allahabad, most companies allow MCA students to sit for placements with CSE and IT students. One of my distant cousins pursuing an MCA from MNNIT Allahabad cleared Google Mt.View. Moreover, CSE, IT, and MCA share a common department here and the computer Club classes are also held for all CSE, IT, and MCA combined.

Whereas In NIT Surathkal, the MCA program is inclined more toward Application Development and thereby focuses more on the latest programming language and tools to develop better and faster applications. Its primary aim is to provide a modern, industry-oriented education in applied computer science.

In my opinion, you should choose MNNIT Allahabad for MCA as it has better placement opportunities.
