NIT Surathkal: 7 Answered Questions

Which should I choose: Electronics and Instrumentation in BITS Pilani Goa Campus, or Electrical and Electronics in NIT Surathkal?

Sanjana ThakurLives in Raipur

Since both the colleges are considered highly reputable and among the best in the country, you should focus on the branch. The choice of the branch directly depends on your inclinations and future goals.

To make it easier for you I have explained each branch in short:

Electrical and Instrumentation:

  • Instrumentation engineering is the engineering specialization that focuses primarily on the principle and operation of measuring instruments that are used in the design and configuration of automated systems in electrical, pneumatic domains, etc.
  • These engineers usually work at chemical or manufacturing plants and their job role involves improving productivity, reliability, safety, optimization, and stability.
  • They are responsible for designing devices that measure physical quantities such as pressure, flow, and temperature. You will require a lot of knowledge in physics much more than electromagnetic theory.

Electrical and Electronics:

  • In this students learn to design electronic circuits, and computer systems and also develop control systems. Electronics play a key role in the implementation and control of electrical machines.
  • The course mainly focuses on designing and testing ICs, inductors, capacitors and resistors and includes fundamentals and principles of physics, mathematics, computer science, and project management.
  • The sub-disciplines of this branch are power, control, electronics, microelectronics and Signal Processing, Telecommunications, Instrumentation and Computers.

Although the choice depends on your own interests, EE has a better scope than EIE.

What should I choose: Electronics and Instrumentation in BITS Pilani Goa Campus, Electrical and Electronics in NIT Surathkal?

Ankit Chaudharinstrumentation engineering graduate

To make an informed decision, it's crucial to understand that changing your choice based on the college you get into won't have much impact. You should acknowledge that Electronics and Instrumentation in BITS Pilani Goa Campus and Electrical and Electronics in NIT Surathkal are two distinct engineering streams with different colleges, and both colleges are excellent in their own right.

Your selection of the branch should entirely depend on your interest. If you are intrigued by electrical or electronic circuits or have been fascinated by electricity since childhood, EEE is the perfect fit for you. Conversely, if you have an interest in instruments or daily life gadgets that make our lives more comfortable, you should opt for E&I.

Keep in mind that EEE focuses on circuit design and development, while E&I focuses on circuit implementation in industries or the real world. EEE is a core branch that concentrates on its domain, but E&I combines all other core branches such as Mechanical, Electronics, Electrical, and even Computer Science.

Both EEE and E&I offer excellent job prospects in the market. E&I graduates can work in core fields or software industries. There is a plethora of industries related to electrical and electronics, so EEE also offers ample job opportunities. Therefore, both branches are exceptional in their way. Choose the one that piques your interest and don't sacrifice your area of interest due to college selection.

Which is better: NIT Goa ECE or NITK EEE?

Piyali RaoB.Tech Information Technology, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (2021)

Among these two courses and colleges, you should probably choose EEE at NITK. Having to know some people studying in both these institutes, I can say that the infrastructure and facilities provided at NIT Goa are very poor, it is also below NITK in terms of rankings.

  • The campus of NITK is very beautiful with lush green surroundings. NIT Goa is much smaller and might be built inside a state government-run college. Students can enjoy leisure time along with their studies.
  • The faculty is very talented and highly experienced.
  • The course curriculum is updated according to the recent industry trends.
  • The placement opportunities are excellent. A lot of companies visit the campus for interviews.
  • NITK is also better if you want to do higher studies like machine learning, etc.
Categories EEE at NIT Surathkal
Course Fee 5.40 lakh
Highest CTC 14-15 LPA
Average CTC 8-9 LPA
Recruiting Companies Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, nVidia, Western Digital, etc.

Hence, choosing EEE at NITK will be a better option as the faculty, infrastructure, and placements of this college is great and there is also a very good scope of higher studies.

Is an ENI in BITS Goa good, and is it better than NIT Surathkal's EEE?

Kriti AnandB.E. EEE from BITS Pilani, K. K. Birla Goa Campus (2019)

ENI stands for Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering while EEE is Electrical & Electronics Engineering. Having known some people studying at both these institutions, I can say that BITS Goa is better than NIT Surathkal.

  • Better companies visit BITS Goa campus than NIT Surathkal.
  • The course curriculum and the quality of academic projects are also better at BITS Goa.
  • The faculty at BITS Goa is also top-notch.
  • In between the two branches, both are almost the same barring a few subjects (3 subjects to be precise).
  • The course load, placements, and projects all are similar between the two.
  • As these are core branches, getting placed in the core companies is going to be difficult at either of the institutes.
Categories ENI at BITS Goa EEE at NIT Surathkal
Course Fee 19.19 lakh 5.40 lakh
Highest CTC 25 LPA 30 LPA
Average CTC 12-13 LPA 15 LPA

Which should be preferred, CS at VNIT or EEE at NIT Surathkal?

Suchandra JhaB.Tech Electronics & Communication, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal

You are comparing two different branches; Computer (CSE) and Electrical (EEE). If you are naturally inclined towards a particular branch, then you should choose it no matter the institute. If you are not sure about the branch then let me share some facts I got to know while researching about the institutes.

  • NIRF Engineering Ranking 2020 – VNIT Nagpur is ranked 27 while NIT Surathkal is ranked 13.
  • Academics – In this regard both are equal. Some professors are good and some are really bad.
  • Extra-Curricular Activities – NIT Surathkal is way better than VNIT Nagpur. You will always find some activity happening on the campus. VNIT Nagpur does not have any such activities being conducted regularly.
  • Campus location – VNIT Nagpur is actually better than NIT Surathkal. Although the Surathkal beach which is right beside the college looks good in photos, the same cannot be said in person. The VNIT Nagpur campus on the other hand is clean and green.
  • Workshops – At VNIT Nagpur most of the workshops organized by the clubs are paid while at NIT Surathkal most of them were free and open to all.

The following table shows a brief insight on relevant facts for both institutes:

Which is easier, EEE or ECE at NIT Surathkal?

Nikhil Ranjan
Tanushree SenB.Tech Electronics and Communication Engineering, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (2019)

I have a few friends at NIT Surathkal and based on the conversation I had with them, I will say at NIT Surathkal, ECE is considered to be the toughest branch.

  1. The academics and research are taken very seriously in the department.
  2. The professors are demanding and highly qualified than other departments.
  3. In this department everyone, from HOD to lab assistants, everyone is serious about studies and making a point about academic rigor.
  4. The exams are also very tough and students even fail in lab examinations too.

But the scenario at the EEE department of NIT Surathkal is slightly different and its biggest advantage is that it has a relaxed attendance policy, unlike other branches.

The recent placement statistics for the branches are as follows.

Fees and Financial Aid:

I enrolled in college via the Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) scheme. As a part of this scheme, I was able to get a seat in the college via reservation. While I am paying the standard fees as other students in the general quota, this scheme allows for students to enroll with a different cutoff and a subsequent increase (by four times) in fees paid. The institute fees accounts for tuition, campus amenities, health care, student activities, and career development fees. The fees do not increase by the year and stay rather consistent, adding up to 443,360 throughout four years. The hostel fees, accomodating for rent, water, electricity and mess food adds up to 246,080. There are several scholarships available on the basis of merit and income level. The information regarding these are passed to us in a coordinated manner as well. Some scholarships are Post Matric (for students who got in through reservation), Airtel Scholarship (for circuital branches), and OP Jindal Scholarship.
