Ans. Chemical Engineering at NITK Surathkal has a solid placement record with an average package of around Rs. 13 LPA and a placement percentage above 85%. While CSE and ECE branches tend to have higher average packages due to IT sector demand, Chemical Engineering students at NITK get placed in core sectors like oil and gas (Reliance, ExxonMobil, HPCL), pharma (Dr. Reddy's, Lupin), FMCG (HUL, PepsiCo), and analytics/consulting (ZS Associates, Mu Sigma). If you have a genuine interest in core chemical engineering roles, NITK is one of the best NITs for this branch.

Ques. What is the JEE Main rank required to get Chemical Engineering at NITK Surathkal?

Ans. Based on JoSAA 2025 data, the General category (Other State) closing rank for B.Tech Chemical Engineering at NITK Surathkal was approximately 18,000-19,000 in the final rounds. Home State (Karnataka) candidates typically need a rank in the range of 13,000-18,000. OBC-NCL candidates can expect admission with ranks up to approximately 7,000-8,000. These figures vary each year, so always check the official JoSAA closing ranks for the most recent year.

The hostel rent for shared accommodation is Rs. 8,820 per semester (inclusive of water and electricity charges). The campus is located near the Arabian Sea, and the hostel life is considered one of the highlights of studying at NITK.

Ques. Can Chemical Engineering students at NITK switch branches after the first year?

Ans. Yes, NITK Surathkal has a branch change policy that allows students to apply for a branch change after the completion of the first year, based on their CGPA. The process is competitive, and students need a high CGPA (typically above 9.0) to be eligible for popular branches like CSE or ECE. The number of seats available for branch change is limited, and the policy details are announced by the Academic Office each year.

Ques. What higher study options are available after B.Tech Chemical Engineering from NITK Surathkal?

Ans. Graduates can pursue M.Tech at NITK itself in specializations like Industrial Biotechnology, Industrial Pollution Control, and Chemical Process Design. Many students also appear for GATE to pursue M.Tech at IITs or other NITs. A significant number of students opt for MBA (CAT/GMAT), MS abroad (GRE), or directly join the industry. NITK's strong alumni network and research environment also support students interested in PhD programs at top global universities.

How is Chemical Engineering at NIT Surathkal?

Karishma Khatri
Shikha GhosalStudied BTech in Computer Science, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (2019)

The Chemical Engineering branch at NIT Surathkal isn’t well-known because of its obsolete curriculum and poor placement scenario. I hope you haven’t yet joined it but if you have known that there is no turning back. It’s better to start working hard to compensate for the poor branch than to sit and regret.

It’s better to opt for Chemical in Trichy or Warangal. Otherwise, you can study hard in the 1st year and opt for a branch change. Even if you fail to get CSE/IT, even civil and mining will do.

I have many friends who joined this department recently and all of them are regretting their decision big time. Some even call it the worst in the institution. So I will recommend you to go for Chemical in NIT Warangal instead.

Fees and Financial Aid:

I am student at NITK,surathkal which is top college of karnatka.I paid a fee of about rupees 115000 yearly as I dont have to pay for tuition fee because my family income is below 1lakh. otherwise fee for general category student is about 11lakh for 4 year btech course.I almost have to to pay about 4.5 lakh.My college is best college. The only problem I find here is about the food only ,actually it's healthy but not taste that good.My college nirf ranking is very good that is 17th.It's even better than some so called IITs.I find my college best in case of placement even in my branch that is chemical, mine branch placement ratio is 92%.There is scholarship also avilable for all categories that is NSP provided by government. There is also other scholarship provided by different private companies such as relience, adani, birla and these scholarships are open for all.My college beauty cannot be defined in words ,its more than that. Our college has its own private beach. There is greenery all aroumd the campus.there is mostly two weather that is summer with rain and summer without rain because of the coastal area.In my college branch dostn't matter that much you can choose your path in any way like if you want to go for core jobs you can, even if you want to go for tech jobs you can do that also.Your placement is guaranteed if you have a decent cgpa and a set of skills. You can also play many sports here if you are passionate about it.I know many students who have left IIT to get into this college. In my college no ragging is allowed,There is zero tolerance to these stuffs.here proffesors are also good. The only thing I am bothered about in NITs is the home quota reservation ,I think this is the reason my college is not doing that much better which it can . There is a good gender ratio in my college. In case you are not able to avail any kind of schlarship you can also opt for loan.
