Reality of PEC Chandigarh

I'm a first year student and I can say that classes schedule is very hectic. Some days you have classes at 8 AM to 5 PM with 1 hour break. It is very hectic for a student to attend and stay active in all the classes.

Fees and Financial Aid:

We have to pay 88,000 rs per semester and BTech is of 4 years and 8 semesters so total fees for BTech is rs 7,71,000 including one time admission fees of rs 5000, one time student service fee of rs 6000, security deposit (refundable ) of rs 8000 and other facilities and services of rs 6000 per semester. This fee structure is for 2024-2028, it could increase after that. For SC, ST category students, they have to pay half of the total tution fees. Merit Scholarships :- Full free ship on tuition fee to top 2 students on the basis of their JEE Main rank for first year. They also have to maintain a CGPA of 9 or above to avail full free ship and if their CGPA is between 8.5 and 9 then they have to pay half tuition fee. Full free-ship on tutition fee to all students belonging to PWD students whose family annual income does'nt exceed rs 500000. Half free-ship on tuition fee to PWD students whose family annual income is less than 1000000. Full free-ship on fee including hostel fee to all students belonging to BPL category.

PEC is one of the brilliant college you must be a part of it

Fees and Financial Aid:

The yearly tution fees is about 1.8 lakh(2 semester). Registration fees is decided whole doing online councelling which also includes the first semester fees. All categories have same fees but after 1st semester some scholarship announced by college for some categories. SC student get 50% cut from there tution fees yearly and EWS student also get some amount of benifit though college.

I will advise you not to compare colleges solely on the basis of rankings and placements because these are too trivial criteria to be considered while choosing your college. One must look at the bigger picture. NIT Delhi, despite being a new institute, has already laid its strong foundation and you can expect excellent placements in the near future.

Here are a few highlights of the institute:

Placements: NIT Delhi has an active placement cell that ensures that every student has at least one offer by the end of the placement drive.
Campus: The campus has limited facilities but provides enough facilities to ensure good quality education. Students have access to wifi facilities 24/7.
Ranking: Don’t let the low rankings mislead you. These ranking bodies consider criteria like campus, branches, alumni, etc which NIT Delhi definitely lacks in because it's new.

Overall, NIT Delhi offers good quality education and a NIT tag that will up your game in higher education.

In terms of NIRF 2023 rankings, NIT Hamirpur is placed 127th while PEC is placed 138th among Engineering colleges in India.

Keeping the rankings apart, your choice of college should be based on two factors-

Branch- If you have a particular interest in one of these branches, I would recommend you choose your college according to that. Both these branches offer good placements, though CSE students end up grabbing the highest packages. Both the colleges offer decent placements.

During the 2023 placement season, the median package for ECE branch at PEC stood at INR 18.40 LPA. Last year, the CSE branch at NIT Hamirpur recorded 96.81% placements. 139 offers were received in total, and the highest salary stood at INR 1.12 CPA.

Brand name- Both the colleges are at par with one another, but NIT Hamirpur carries the much-valued ‘NIT’ tag. It has a good infrastructure and a beautiful campus. The surroundings are serene and close to nature. If you have an interest in traveling, photography, and trekking, Hamirpur is more suitable to explore these interests. PEC definitely offers more exposure, being based out of Chandigarh.

IT at IIIT Allahabad is a better option, compared to CSE at PEC. In terms of academics, facilities, and placements, it has an edge over PEC. IIIT Allahabad placement 2022 concluded with an average CTC of INR 19.52 LPA. The highest CTC offered this year was INR 32.5 LPA. The placement rate was around 100%. The campus has a good student crowd, peer learning opportunities are ample.

But PEC has a locational advantage. Compared to Allahabad, Chandigarh offers better exposure and career opportunities.

It's difficult to choose one between NIT Kurukshetra Civil and OEC Chandigarh CSE because both branches are different with diverse scopes and opportunities. You will have to consider a lot of parameters while choosing one of these

Personally I will suggest you opt for the CS branch unless you have any specific inclination towards civil engineering or any other branch. The excellent placements of this branch are not the only reason I am suggesting you go for it. The courses taught are rather easy and can be covered through self-study which may not be possible for Civil.

You are aware of the academic situation of most engineering colleges these days. Most professors have no interest in teaching. I believe that if you can get CS in PEC you can also get CS in NIT Kurukshetra. It has a better alumni network so it's a better option than PEC. Civil students will have options like research internships, masters or Ph.D. later, get into IES, etc.

A news article was published in 2018 which assured that there are a lot of chances that PEC shall be converted into IIT very soon.

Firstly, PEC is part of the University of Punjab. If it is converted into IIT, then it has to be turned into an autonomous institute first, which has not started yet. There is still not any confirmation regarding the conversion of PEC into IIT. It is a huge thing and these type of topics generally goes through a lot of controversies.

If you are taking admission in PEC thinking that you will get a degree from IIT, then you are completely wrong. You will get a degree with a tag of PEC.

It will be better if you stop thinking about the IIT factor. This institute itself a reputed one and provides amazing placements to every one of its students. So, you must be focused on your hard work, career and future career perspectives without thinking about PEC is transformed into IIT.

Which is better NSUT IT or PEC CSE for a Chandigarh student?

In terms of brand recognition and exposure, NSUT IT is better than PEC Chandigarh. Delhi offers way better exposure, due to the presence of the industry belt in the area. There are many reputed technological institutes in Delhi such as IIITD, so the learning opportunities are ample.

CSE and IT aren’t too different. The major difference between the two branches is hardware and 90% of students are more invested in software roles. If you aren’t particularly interested in the hardware section of Computer Science, choosing NSUT will be better. NSUT placements are great for IT. Students of the branch get salary packages in the range of INR 4 - 20 LPA.

Both the colleges are premier engineering colleges offering excellent education and are head-to-head in most factors. However, you may want to consider the following points before making the final decision

In terms of placements and the faculty pool, PEC fares better than NIT Kurukshetra.
Established in 1928, PEC has a richer legacy than NIT Kurukshetra which was established around 1963.
NIT Kurukshetra has a bigger and more beautiful campus than PEC.
NIT Kurukshetra offers the much coveted NIT tag which PEC does not.

The final decision depends on personal factors like location and future prospects. If you are from Chandigarh choosing PEC will be better.

Placements are much better at NIT Bhopal. The average package being offered is around 12.51 LPA which is comparatively better than the packages offered to PEC Chandigarh students.
CSE department witnessed 100% placement offers at NIT Bhopal.
