University of Sunderland is a public research university in North East England, chartered in 1992 with academic roots in a technical college founded in 1901. As per QS World University Rankings: Europe 2026, the university ranks in the top 10 across Europe and third in the UK for international student diversity.

The university offers more than 200 English-medium undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through four faculties: Business, Law and Tourism; Education and Society; Health Sciences and Wellbeing; and Technology. Indian students most often enrol in the MBA, MSc Data Science, MSc International Business Management and MSc Nursing pathways delivered on the Sunderland and London campuses.

  • UK ranking: 27th in the UK, Guardian University Guide 2026 (up from 33rd in 2025)
  • Acceptance rate: around 64% (estimated figure)
  • Intakes: September and January
  • PG tuition 2026/27: £16,500-£19,000 per year (INR 21.19-24.41 lakh); select MBAs at £20,000 (INR 25.69 lakh)

Sunderland has strengthened its position over recent cycles, climbing from 33rd to 27th in the Guardian league table between 2025 and 2026 and sitting in the 531-540 band of the QS Europe 2026 rankings. In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, it holds the 1501+ group, an outcome consistent with post-92 UK peers whose research citation volumes stay below QS main-table thresholds.

Postgraduate taught tuition for 2026/27 runs £16,500 to £19,000 across most courses, with select MBAs at £20,000, and the automatic Global Leaders Scholarship trims that sticker by £5,000 for undergraduates or £4,500 for postgraduates. The two-year UK Graduate Route allows master’s holders to work post-study, a rule flagged as decisive across affordable UK universities for Indian applicants.

Exchange rate used: 1 GBP = INR 128.45 as of July 2026.

Admission Status: Open. UCAS Clearing remains open for September 2026 undergraduate entry, and direct postgraduate applications are accepted on a rolling basis for the January 2027 intake. The UCAS equal consideration deadline for September 2027 undergraduate entry is 14 January 2027.

University of Sunderland Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Entry thresholds vary slightly between undergraduate and postgraduate levels, but every Indian applicant needs verifiable academic transcripts and an approved English proficiency test result submitted before CAS issuance.

Postgraduate (PG) requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree with minimum 55% aggregate (Indian second-class equivalent) from a recognised university; some MBAs require 2 years’ work experience
  • English: IELTS 6.5 overall (no band under 6.0), PTE Academic 62 or TOEFL iBT 79 (0-120 legacy scale); verify current minimums at the official admissions page
  • Attested transcripts and degree certificate; WES evaluation not mandatory for most programmes
  • GRE and GMAT are not required for most postgraduate courses including the MBA

Undergraduate (UG) requirements:

  • Class 12 (CBSE, ICSE or recognised state board) with minimum 60% aggregate
  • English: IELTS 6.0 overall (no band under 5.5), PTE Academic 55 or accepted equivalent
  • Applicants from English-medium schools may request an IELTS waiver by submitting an official medium-of-instruction letter

Key insight: Sunderland’s IELTS floor for postgraduate courses (6.5 overall, 6.0 per band) is one of the more accessible thresholds in the UK, but the per-band minimum trips up Indian applicants who over-index on the overall score without shoring up the weakest section.

University of Sunderland Acceptance Rate 2027

University of Sunderland has one of the more open admission profiles among UK post-92 institutions, with acceptance running at around 64% (estimated figure) for international applicants meeting minimum entry thresholds.

Indian applicants meeting the 55% (PG) or 60% (UG) academic minimum with the required IELTS band and clean documentation typically receive conditional or unconditional offers within four to six weeks of a complete application.

The university does not publish year-on-year acceptance figures in an official statistical release, so this benchmark is best treated as an estimated figure rather than a confirmed institutional rate.

Reality check: A 64% estimate reflects Sunderland’s mission-driven, teaching-focused profile. Indian applicants with strong academics rarely face rejection here; deposit timing and visa document readiness tend to be the real blockers in practice.

University of Sunderland Campus, Facilities and Student Life

University of Sunderland operates two UK campuses in the city (the main City Campus and the riverside St Peter’s Campus) alongside a London Canary Wharf campus and international teaching partners in Hong Kong and beyond.

  • Location: Sunderland sits in North East England, about 20 minutes by rail from Newcastle upon Tyne and 90 minutes from Edinburgh by train
  • Housing: university halls guaranteed for first-year international students who meet the accommodation application deadline; private rentals £450-£750 per month
  • Facilities: David Puttnam Media Centre for film and journalism, Sciences Complex with pharmacy and health labs, purpose-built library and 24/7 study spaces
  • Indian student community: 7,887 international students from 160 countries with an active Indian Student Society hosting Diwali and Holi events each year

What Indian students say: The compact city footprint, affordable rentals compared with London, and easy weekend trips to Edinburgh or York rank high in student feedback. The trade-off is that local nightlife options and blue-chip on-campus career fairs are smaller than in bigger UK cities like Manchester or Birmingham.

Sunderland also ranks in the top 10 across Europe and third in the UK for international student diversity in the QS World University Rankings: Europe 2026, a measure of how many nationalities the university enrols relative to its size.

Key insight: For Indian applicants worried about UK Graduate Route eligibility, Sunderland is a recognised UK degree-awarding institution regardless of QS main-table position. Visa outcomes hinge on your CAS and course, not on the global rank number.

University of Sunderland Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

According to Higher Education Statistics Agency 2023 data, University of Sunderland reports strong employability outcomes, with 95% of graduates in employment or further study within 15 months of graduation.

  • Employment outcome: 95% in employment or further study within 15 months (HESA Graduate Outcomes 2023)
  • Median starting salary: not disclosed by the university at the aggregate level; UK national median for new graduate roles sits around £26,000-£28,000 (INR 33.40-35.97 lakh) per Prospects market data (estimated benchmark)
  • Representative recruiters: NHS Trusts, Nissan, Sage and regional employers featured at the annual graduate recruitment fair (representative sample; the university does not publish a definitive corporate list)
  • Placement pathways: most undergraduate courses offer an optional 48-week paid placement year via the sandwich degree structure
  • Career support: 3 years of careers services access after graduation; dedicated international careers advisers

Insider note: Indian graduates typically leverage the two-year Graduate Route to build 12-18 months of UK experience before pivoting to a Skilled Worker visa. Roles in NHS Trusts, business analytics and hospitality dominate observed placement outcomes.

University of Sunderland vs Peer Universities

Indian applicants comparing University of Sunderland typically weigh it against other affordable UK post-92 universities offering similar tuition bands and clear pathways to the two-year Graduate Route.

UniversityTypical PG Fee (GBP)Typical PG Fee (INR)Key Differentiator for Indian Applicants
University of Sunderland£18,000INR 23.12 lakhAutomatic PG scholarship worth £4,500; low North East cost of living
University of Greenwich£17,500 (est.)INR 22.48 lakhLondon-adjacent campuses at Greenwich and Medway
Coventry University£19,850 (est.)INR 25.50 lakhHigher QS global position and central England location
University of Hertfordshire£17,100 (est.)INR 21.96 lakhStronger STEM research profile close to London

University of Sunderland stands out on two fronts among these peers. Total cost of attendance is the lowest thanks to the cheapest cost of living in the group and an automatic PG scholarship of £4,500. The trade-off is that global brand recognition and QS-rank optics are stronger at Coventry and comparable at Hertfordshire.

University of Sunderland is a strong fit for Indian applicants prioritising affordability, an open admission profile and access to the UK Graduate Route over global brand prestige. Total investment for a postgraduate year runs about £29,000 (INR 37.25 lakh), against a UK graduate labour market median around £26,000 (INR 33.40 lakh), giving a payback horizon of roughly one to two working years on the Graduate Route.

Automatic international scholarships materially reduce the postgraduate tuition sticker, an active Indian Student Society smooths the landing, and the two-year UK Graduate Route provides runway to secure Skilled Worker sponsorship alongside peers from University of East London and similar post-92 institutions.

Applicants who need a top-200 world ranking on their CV, for competitive Indian government roles or for onward US PhD applications, will find better fit at a Russell Group institution such as Newcastle University, based just twenty minutes north of Sunderland by train. Sunderland’s teaching-focused, applied-learning identity is the strength; global research rank is not part of the pitch.

University of Sunderland FAQs

Ques. What part-time work rules apply to Indian students at University of Sunderland?

Ans. Indian students on the UK Student visa may work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during official vacation periods across all Sunderland campuses. Placement year and internship work counts against this cap unless the placement is a formal degree module. Working beyond the cap is a visa breach that can trigger removal, so students must track hours carefully.

Ques. Is IELTS mandatory or can Sunderland grant a waiver for Indian applicants?

Ans. Sunderland accepts IELTS 6.5 (postgraduate, no band under 6.0) or IELTS 6.0 (undergraduate, no band under 5.5) as the standard English proof. Applicants from English-medium schools or universities may request a waiver by submitting an official medium-of-instruction letter with their application. Waivers are decided case by case in the offer letter. PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT and Duolingo are also accepted.

Ques. How does University of Sunderland verify Indian degree transcripts?

Ans. Indian degree transcripts must be provided in original English or with certified translations, together with the degree certificate or provisional degree. Sunderland verifies transcripts internally rather than requiring WES for most programmes, though selected professional courses may ask for third-party evaluation. Applicants should retain attested copies from their issuing university for CAS issuance and UK visa submission stages.

Ques. What is the application fee for direct postgraduate applications to Sunderland?

Ans. University of Sunderland does not charge an application fee for postgraduate taught courses submitted through the online portal directly to the university. Undergraduate UCAS applications carry the standard UCAS fee of £29.50 (INR 3,789) for the 2027 entry cycle, covering up to five course choices. UCAS fees are reviewed each year and paid to UCAS directly.

Ques. Does University of Sunderland accept education loans from Indian banks?

Ans. Yes. University of Sunderland features on the recognised university lists of major Indian education loan providers including State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, Avanse, ICICI Bank and Auxilo. The university issues an unconditional offer letter and CAS statement that banks require for loan sanction. Applicants should factor 6-10 weeks between deposit and CAS issuance into their loan disbursement timeline.

Ques. Can Indian students bring dependants on the Sunderland Student visa?

Ans. For most taught postgraduate courses at Sunderland, dependants cannot accompany the primary Student visa holder following the January 2024 UK Home Office rule change. The dependant route remains open only for full-time research degrees such as PhD and MPhil, and for certain government-sponsored courses longer than six months. Applicants planning to bring family should confirm eligibility with the Sunderland visa team before applying.

Ques. How does University of Sunderland issue conditional offers to Indian applicants?

Ans. Sunderland issues a conditional offer when the applicant meets academic minimums but has an outstanding requirement, most commonly IELTS submission, final year transcript or the £3,500 tuition deposit. Meeting the condition converts the offer to unconditional and triggers CAS issuance. Decision turnaround on complete applications runs about four to six weeks. Applicants can accept or defer within the offer’s stated validity window.

Ques. What refund policy applies if a Sunderland student’s UK visa is refused?

Ans. Sunderland refunds the £3,500 tuition deposit (minus a small administrative fee) when a student presents a formal UK visa refusal letter within the university’s stated refund window. Fraudulent documentation, refusal on misrepresentation grounds or voluntary withdrawal forfeit the deposit entirely. Applicants should submit refund requests to the finance team with the visa refusal evidence attached for institutional review and processing.

Overview

My teacher at the college suggested this university for me. I knew that teachers were helpful, and because when I was young I had many difficulties succeeding with my studies, I thought that I should choose a university that was not too demanding and supportive. When I started at the University of Sunderland in London, I was impressed by the various activities the institution offered. Also, the university has many departments for students to help them with various enquiries and assistance. For example, one of them is the department of health and well-being. The university engages in many activities such as conferences, trips, and events. Many societies organised by students with the help of the university deliver many activities that provide a better social environment. In fact, the tourism and travel society organises trips for students across the UK and abroad. Also, sports societies are available at the university, such as a dance club, swimming, football, and more, for active students. So far, being a student at the University of Sunderland in London has been a unique experience! The institution collaborates with the University of Sunderland in Hong Kong. The university is definitely multicultural. I made many friends, starting from Indians and Asians to Europeans, Africans, and South Americans. There are many employment events where students can meet potential employers for opportunities such as internships and work experience with important companies.

The university has a well-furnished library with the availability of many types of computers. Also, there are many study areas with free sockets for charging laptops and telephones. On the upper floors, there are a lot of places for students to study, as well as places for groups to study. There are two rooms for private meetings. A large canteen provides fresh Indian food, fresh vegetables and fruits, with an allocated sitting area. At the far end of the sitting area, a pool table, ping-pong table game, and table football are provided by the university for the students' enjoyment. The university expanded due to the increasing number of students, acquiring another building next to the older university. The new establishment is furnished with a modern canteen and study areas as well. This is a common misunderstanding. The university offers extra short courses in which students can participate during their time at the university. For example, I applied for a marketing course for which the duration was about 5 months and I had to attend once a week. At the end of the course, I received a certificate of attendance for the completion of the course from the university. I also completed the project management course, and now I am studying Microsoft Word, for which I will have to sit for an exam at the end of the course to get the certificate. I didn't apply for the entrepreneurship course because I was not interested in it, but this course is also available to students. There is the availability of job volunteer opportunities for students with the Eco Festival, in which I participate as a film critic.
