What Students Say
Likes
- It had a global lounge which has free coffee also I had made some amazing friends due to international activites planned
- My campus was huge and it was in middle of the city which was to easy to navigate
- We had top-notch equipments to work with I- mac desktops and Nikon DSLR
Dislikes
- Due to pandemic , most of the classes were online
- Everything had a cost which prevented international students to actually take up opportunities
- Instructors were very casual and chilled out , which i feel the course itself was very outdated
Course Curriculum
- The course curriculum was challenging least to say for me because I had transferred over to media from a traditional business management background. The positive bit was the course on Global politics, which I enjoyed a lot.
- The negative aspects were that there were a lot of physical elements that were expected out of us without proper depth of knowledge being given to us first. We had two classes in a day, and they lasted for an hour. My classroom was of 35 people in total, which was amazing as it was very niche and specifically targeted. There were only 2 Indian students enrolled in my course.
Admission Experience
-
I applied to the following universities:
- Brunel University of London
- Oxford Brookes University
- Nottingham Trent University
- University of Oxford
- I was shortlisted for all 4 universities, as I had good grades in my undergraduate degree.
- I got CAS letters from all 4 universities, and I chose Nottingham Trent University. I also only applied to these 4 because I was late for Jan admissions
- I chose Nottingham Trent University because it had the lowest tuition fee comparatively as well and my living costs were less too comparatively
- It was also ranked as the number 1 university in terms of employability rate after graduation by Times Network of Education, a credible portal, which was the main reason
- My admission process includes writing a personal statement, showing proof, showing my undergrad transcripts, and my resume. and showing proof of funds and my IELTS Score, which was optional, and the criteria was to score min 6.5 overall in IELTS
- Well, it was the time of the pandemic, there were significant challenges in terms of finding a place to live, getting my documents in order, and transcribing them from Hindi to English according to UK standards. Given that the country was in lockdown, it was hard to find service providers who would do that.
- I applied for the January 2021 intake. I had started the process in late October of 2020, and my admission process was rather quick compared to others. We were waiting for my final transcripts to be submitted, which I could only submit in early nov due to the pandemic. I had already taken IELTS the year before, and we processed my documents while waiting for my final undergraduate documents
Faculty
- The faculty ratio was 2: 50 which was great, as we could interact personally, and a lot of detailed attention was provided to us.
- The teaching methodology was sometimes like they were reading out of a PPT, which bored me, but a lot of times it was more of challenging us to think and answer like a discussion, which I loved. I loved my global politics professor.
- He was tough, strong, and could shatter egos in a minute; he also had a very deep knowledge, which I loved.
Campus Life
-
My college had 3 campuses
- City centre campus
- Cliford Campus
- Bradford Campus
- We had all the facilities in all three 3 campuses, including a gym, swimming pool, cattle farming, table tennis court, dance classes, music classes, Cameras anything that we really needed.
- Global Week was a popular festival that took place every year, where people from every country would put up a stall and represent their culture. A good fun time to meet new people and enjoy
Part Time Jobs
- I do not know how much positions are generally available for TA , RA OR DA because I never looked for one nor I know the range
- We had marketing, admin and social media positions available for students and the hourly wage was 8.20 which was a basic min wage at the time
- The maximum allowed of hours to work was 20 hours per student; it was competitive to secure on campus part-time jobs because it was pandemic; the openings were fewer, and the people applying for it were more . I had secured as a college rep for a month after the first round
- Generally students min basic wage on hourly basis during studying and applying for part-time jobs .
- You have to source on linkedin , student temps , university websites, partners who are tied up with university placements , look for job openings , apply for job via tailored resume or email , write a cover letter to stand out in the competition, prepare for interview , chase for feedback and results
Placement
- 5 percent of my batch secured employment within 6 Months of completing their course
- The average salary at the time was 25,000 - 30,000 per annum
- Generally, through recruitment agencies and a referral process, people find jobs. People can also find jobs through Indeed and region-specific portals like Reed
- Global Media, Walt Disney, Amazon, UN, and Netflix
Accommodation
- I opted for a double standard studio accommodation, as it was the time of COVID and I was Jain too. I was not ready to share the kitchen with non-veg flatmates, and my studio was off campus with a price of 550 per month, which included electricity bills and the use of the gym.
- My flat was 5 minutes away from campus, which was super convenient as it was near stores, cafes, bus stop, tram stop, and local tourist attractions, which made the area quite popular
Exams
- It was not necessary to take IELTS as British Universities recognise the English taught in the University of Mumbai as accredited to meet their standards and threshold. I also studied in the ICSE board during my preliminary school, which was an advantage to my background. I still appeared for IELTS and scored 7.5. The documents necessary were my high school grades, undergraduate transcripts, SOP, LOR, AND my resume
Fees
- CAS - 3,000 Pounds
- Tuition Fees- 15,000 Pounds
- Student Living - 660 per month
- Groceries - 100 per month
- Outings - 100 Pound
- IHS - 700 for 2 years
- Transportation - 50 pounds per month for work
- Other expenses varied
- The tuition fee was semester-wise, as we opted for that option, which was given to international students
Scholarship
- There were scholarships available for Indian Students for up to 25% based on academic grades and strength of profile, although I could not avail it because I had missed the deadline. The award amount varies from 3000- 10,000 pounds.
- Two of my friends got a full-ride scholarship, but they were British by citizenship. So, it really depended on the nationality criteria, too
