Colleges Where I Was Accepted

Reason for choosing my college

  • There are several reasons I chose Nottingham Trent University over all the other offers I received.
    • Course Structure: The program offered an ideal balance between theoretical and practical industry-related curriculum, incorporating market research and hands-on experience. While other universities had similar courses that were more like independent studying rather than multi-cultural engagement, which was an important factor for me.
    • Cost of Living and Student Life: Out of all the university offers I received, Nottingham was the only city that not only had a lower cost of living but also had a vibrant student life, making it a safer city to move to, especially if the country is new to me.
    • Positive alumni feedback: Before shortlisting this university, I messaged quite a few people from every university, and to my luck, I heard back from some.
  • Nottingham Trent was the only university that had positive feedback in terms of education quality, friendly professors, lesser academic competition, making it a healthy learning environment, and going student life privileges, making me confident with my decision. And they were right; I had the best time of my life there.

Colleges Where I Was Rejected

Reason for Rejection

  • In the second round of interviews, I had to submit a project proposal based on any current trend in the fashion at that time. I chose a topic around Indian handicrafts in the international market. Although it was quite trendy, the interviewer did not resonate with the topic and was not convinced. I think that could be the reason, as the topic was not up to market standards.
  • Also, I was facing some technical issues, unfortunately, due to which we had to switch from video call to audio call, which made me lose my confidence and I ended up rambling things. It wouldn't have matter anyways as the fees were high, especially because it is not only one of the best fashion universities in the world, but since it is located in London, the living cost was out of my budget. I would have still chosen Nottingham Trent over UAL.

Tips to enhance your application

  • To make a strong application, it is important to share your true passion of studying the specific course and be true to your SOP, making it a bit personal and with aspirations without hinting at things like going there to make more money and start my own business, as all this can go against the student visa rules.
  • Make sure it is to the point and does not repeat the same tings again and again, and also share a strong 5-year plan in it, making the course act as a stepping stone to achieve it. Don't sound unsure about the course, as the people there really appreciate honesty and passion for every course.
  • Make sure all the documents are well organised and named, making it easier for them to access them, all of them in PFD format, sticking to the application requirements only. Don't share unnecessary documents.

Admission Experience

  • Choosing the UK was not tough, as I had never given a thought to any other countries over the UK. I had family in the UK; it was closer to India with just 8 hours of travel distance, and it was one of the fashion countries in the world. I did consider Milan and Paris too but due to the language barrier, the UK felt safer.
  • Nottingham Trent has received a lot of awards in terms of course quality, student city, employability, and sustainability practices, all being the perfect choice for me. Being a fashion student travelling abroad, all these reasons felt right to choose this university.
  • NTU is known for having one of the best industry-related fashion courses in the UK, focusing on sustainability and innovation. Nottingham is also known as a creative hub due to its rich history and home to independent designers, vintage shops, and successful designers like Paul Smith, all making it a perfect destination for a fashion student.
  • The location is not too far from London or any other cities in the UK, situated in the West Midlands, making it easier to explore the rest of the country.
  • Career opportunities: NTU does have in-house part-time jobs and employability teams that help you find the right job role and help you with the application process. However, for a master's student, there is hardly any time to attend employability sessions as most of those sessions overlapped with my daily course hours. It also doesn't support a lot getting into big fashion brands, making it tougher to get jobs right after the master's degree.
  • Choosing NTU and Nottingham is the best decision I have made in my life. Every little experience, every challenge and hardship, every night and fun times with my friends is something I will cherish my entire life. The course was not easy but I ended up learning a lot about life and career by completing my master's. It indeed was a very safe place to stay and have a fun and vibrant student life.

Class Schedule

8

  • The course was divided into terms. The first term had lectures four days a week, mostly morning lectures. These were mostly theoretical, where the head lecturer would present all four courses together. Later that day, we were all divided into smaller groups for a seminar, interactive sessions where we had to share our opinions and experience on the topics discussed. Since the course was based on the current industry, we were then given activities that required us to explore the fashion businesses and brands and customer behavior stepping outside the classrooms and exploring, and analysing and presenting into presentations that were aimed to be submitted the same day. The lecturer used to review every presentation and share their feedback the same day or till the next day, making it quite an interesting and practical studying experience.
  • The class timings were usually in the mornings or afternoons, with 2-hour lectures and short breaks in between.
  • There were combined lectures with 100-120 students and then seminars with 20 students. We had approximately 45% Indians in my course—the first term we hardly had time to study at home as we had longer lectures and everything was done during the lectures. The second term was a mix of lectures two days a week and, the rest of the days, self-study as it was a group project so we spent most of our time with our team working on the project. The third term was mostly self-study with one lecture a week and personal sessions with my final dissertation mentor twice a week. We spent hours in the library and home studying and researching, as it was a quite lengthy dissertation.

Faculty

6

  • Every faculty has a different specialisation in the fashion industry, which was quite interesting. We had senior 20-30 year old fashion industry experts, fashion researchers, and fashion professionals in the luxury brands, all acting as an inspiration for different career roles to choose from. All of them were very approachable and helpful.
  • My favourite was my dissertation mentor, who helped me and encouraged me whenever I was stuck on something. She has worked in different countries and was from Hong Kong, so she understood me well and helped me get through homesickness.
  • Faculties did not help me with getting any kind of jobs.

Campus Life

8

  • My university has 3 campuses. My library is also one of the landmarks of Nottingham, making it very famous. It is easily accessible and has its own Starbucks, making it attractive to students. It also has its own GP services, and NTU Sports is one of the best programs in the UK. Mine was a city campus, which means it connected to the main attractions of the city.

Part Time Jobs

  • The average pay increases every year set by the government of the UK. It was 9.5 pounds per hour in 2022. It can be quite challenging to get part-time jobs so you should start finding one as soon as you get there.
  • There are a lot of job opportunities during Christmas where you can work on a temporary basis too due to Christmas holidays, since all the British don't usually like working around that, making it a perfect opportunity to start working. You usually have to apply from individual brand's career websites or a walk-in inquiry also helps sometimes.
  • On campus, part-time job opportunities include taking part in open days, helping aspiring students and parents with campus visits, being a part of the marketing team of the student council, promoting the university on social media platforms, and organising events in the university.
  • There are quite a few off-campus roles, like working in restaurants, warehouses, and cafes. There are a lot of retail chains too for part-time retail jobs in fashion and non-fashion brands.

Placement

1

  • It took me a while to find a full-time job after my course, but you just need to keep applying before you graduate to get the job in time. There are a lot of services that help you get jobs quicker but you have to pay a lot to avail of their services. The key is to keep looking for full-time jobs after the second term itself.

Accommodation

Off Campus
8

  • I found my accommodation on a website called "University Living". It was pretty straightforward and they gave me a virtual viewing, making it easier for me to book it in time.
  • There are also installments in paying the accommodation fees that can ease some expenses for you during the initial days of settling in the country.
  • I was too late in finding an on-campus accommodation, as that usually opens in March for a September intake course. They are usually cheaper but you have to be quick. Always find a place through a service as they are reliable rather than going with private agents to avoid issues in a new country.
