Colleges Where I Was Accepted

Reason for choosing my college

  • The overall course structure offered by the university seemed better in terms of covering all the skills required to function in the industry. They also offered a significant scholarship for the program.
  • The programme also offered a 3-month external dissertation opportunity that helps you put the skills you learn to test in an industrial setting, which also proved to be a gateway for me to land my first role.
  • I also considered the expense I would incur towards accommodation and the university accommodation offered was good and affordable.

Colleges Where I Was Rejected

Reason for Rejection

  • The major reason why I was not selected at the above university is probably because I applied too late. It is important to apply on time because, towards the end, the number of seats is limited and the competition is fierce. Your chances to secure any scholarships reduce significantly too.

Tips to enhance your application

  • Share why you wish to pursue the course and why you should be a good fit or why you should be considered. Give examples of what you have done so far in your pursuit to learn what you have wished to learn.
  • Consider getting admission to a Tier 1 university for your bachelors. Sometimes even a good university in national image is not ranked as tier 1 in international image. Check your university's ranking before enrollment. This will help you get better universities offering you a seat for your masters.

Admission Experience

  • I considered European countries for my master's degree. Although I sincerely considered several European countries that don't ask for a tuition fee, I preferred the UK because I could finish my degree in one year and also because the tax that you have to pay once you get a job seemed less, leaving more cash in hand, which helps you in building your assets or to pay off your debts. Overall, considering 5 years in the UK vs. 5 years in other European countries, I was ending up making more money in the UK.
  • I chose Lanaster University as it was ranked in the top 10 universities in the UK to pursue data science in the national rankings. The university was ranked very high in internal rankings like QS rankings and times higher education rankings too.
  • The course offered covered all the necessary subjects that would help me develop a strong foundation to build a career as a data scientist. Also, the 3-month external placement offered by the university helped me pick Lancaster.
  • The placement helps you test your skills in an industrial setting and can even open doors to your first job. Overall, I liked the campus; the hostel accommodation was good. However, the deanery and the student union can be biased in handling disciplinary issues.

Class Schedule

8

  • The class schedule is hectic in the first term and the midterm. Your classes can have a varying schedule—usually a lecture is an hour long and the labs can be 2-3 hours long. 3-5 classes in a week. We had about 100 students in our batch. 60-65% of which were Indian.
  • You usually get enough time to finish your assignments, but the time given varies depending on the subject, the teacher and the nature of the assignment.

Faculty

9

  • Overall, I am happy with the faculty members and their knowledge in the subject matter. They are extremely approachable.
  • You can also approach teaching assistants to help you with specific queries or schedule time with the faculty themselves to seek advice. Faculties can help you get a part-time or full-time job through references, but usually they refrain from doing so.

Campus Life

9

  • Single campus divided into multiple colleges. All the facilities are available. Be careful with your bikes; don't leave them outside. Thieves do operate in the area.
  • Most of the events are organised for and by undergraduates. Based on your interests and free time, you can participate in any extracurricular activity you want. They have multiple clubs, from chess to rugby, from poetry to comedy and from astronomy to kwiditch.

Part Time Jobs

  • Most Indians end up working as waiters, tech support, hospitality, or campus ambassadors. Lancaster has a lot to offer in terms of job and if you sincerely prepare a resume and try to apply, it is not that difficult to land a part-time job.
  • One advice would be to apply for an NI number before you get a job. The process to apply is like any other job. Prepare a resume and a cover letter and apply on the university job portal.
  • Usually masters students don't get to be TAs but there are other sorts of jobs available on the campus and the university has its own job portal to hunt for part-time jobs. You can become an assistant to the dean but the competition is fierce. They will usually pay you the national minimum wage but there are some jobs that will pay you more than the national minimum wage.
  • For an international student, 20 hours per week is the maximum amount of part-time work allowed.

Placement

10

  • The competition is fierce and the companies are not willing to sponsor visas. If you have a PSW, you are most likely to secure a job in 6 months, but getting your employer to sponsor you is a bigger challenge.
  • The average salary that students land is around 35k pounds. There are various job portals and recruiting agents that help you find jobs.
