What Students Say
Likes
- Good Environment - campus, library, stores, accommodation
- Pushes individual logical thinking - the projects are designed to improve the person's ability to provide logical reasoning
- The number of activities - Plenty of clubs and societies within the uni
Dislikes
- I would have been happy if I had more technical modules for my course.
- Should have dealt more with the defensive side of cyber security.
- I feel some modules were not required and could have been replaced by some other relevant mods.
Course Curriculum
-
Curriculum wasn't that tough, it had mix of both theory and practical
-
It provided a good intro, even if a person doesn't know how to code or write the right papers, it kinda develops those abilities.
-
Negative being had modules that weren't necessary instead i Would have liked it more if there were more cyber defense module
-
I had both 2 hours of theory and 2 hours of labs, anyone could come in and go out at any part of those classes
-
Around 45 students in a class.
Admission Experience
- Applied for 6 universities and got shortlisted in 4 universities.
- University of york, lancaster university ,university of exeter and university of bath
- My applications were rejected in kings college london and university of southampton
- Both of the university's world ranking are quite high (in top 100), so its very competitive, probably there were individuals with more relevant education and exp.
- I choose lancaster university because of its reputation, Ranking for my subject, overall world ranking and the safety
- I went through an agency, Had written ietls and gathered all relevant docs (passport, educational docs, LOR, letter stating why im interested to pursue the course and why that particular uni). Once applied and waited for my results, there were no exams.
- It was very smooth
- 2023 September intake, Availability of the course and uni in UK. for the jan intake only few uni offers courses(options are quite limited).
- Hardly 3-4 months, Few days to prepare and complete the Ielts exam and then post applying. I waited for 2 months for the results. Once the results were released, then I applied for a Visa, the process took around 15-20 days.
Faculty
- Ratio was around 1:4-5
- The teaching method is very practical and good, in a way its sufficient but with the current job market personal reading and upskilling is very important.
- There were cases were lecturers have helped students to get jobs but i find that quite rare. Unless the person is very close to the lecturer I don't think so the lecturers would go out of the way to help students secure a job,
- There was a Faculty named Matt, the vast amount of knowledge and practical experience he had was tremendous, He used to be super organised.
Campus Life
- University has one big campus, and the accommodation are known as college, there were around 6-7colleges within the entire campus
- Restaurants, labs, convenience store, bar, library, sports facilities, and medical services
- Roses is one of the biggest festival and there are plenty of other events like summer and winter ball
- There are a lot of sports activities, more than 20 -30 at least.
Part Time Jobs
- You have to be a Phd student to secure a TA or RA position, Its not like the USA.
- I have no idea about the pay for a TA/RA/DA
- There are plenty of jobs in food chains and convenience stores.
- Also there are jobs outside the campus as well for part time.
- The average pay is around 12 Gbp / hr
- 20 hours a week is the max a person can work.
- Yeah it's easy if you have a friend to land a part time job.
- There are plenty of jobs in food chains and convenience stores. Also there are jobs outside the campus as well for part time.
- The average pay is around 12 Gbp / hr 20 hours a week is the max a person can work. yeah it's easy if you have a friend to land a part time job. The process of applying for jobs is usually online, have a well prepared CV and apply for the job.
Placement
- The full time job entirely depends on the course, currently tis very difficult to land a full time job in the UK market. I would say hardly 10% land jobs in these 6 months
- 30-32k GBP for a Fresher is the average pay in the UK
- Online platforms like linkedin, or referrals through known people
- Placement experience is very poor for my batch regardless of the course
Accommodation
- University portal provides some options for both on campus and external accommodations. I chose on campus accommodation.
- Within campus accommodation there are lot of options. I had taken a superior ensuite room for which the rent was around 177 GBP per week.
- I didn't face any challenges, there are plenty of options and you are also provided an option to list any special requirements.
- It was 10-15mins walk away.
Exams
- Both IELTS and TOEFL would do the job, I went in through IELTS. GRE isn't required.
- Statement of Purpose(SOP), 2 letters of Recommendation LOR, a good updated CV, Results of your previous degree.
- For visa people need to submit Uni's acceptance letter, IElts score and Proof of funds.
- I didn't have any sort of interview other than the visa interview,
Fees
- Fee details keep getting updated every year, so please check the university portal for the fee structure, There are no indirect charges present.
- Uni accommodation is optional in the UK, people can stay outside. I had taken a superior ensuite room which included all facilities other than the food for which the weekly rent was 177 pounds.
- 150- 200 pounds per month excluding the weekly rent
Scholarship
- There are scholarships available, I hadn't applied for any. I have very little to no idea on it, other than the fact it was available.
- I have no idea on the eligibility criteria or the amount that would be sanctioned. The details about this as well are available on the uni website.
- Yes there were multiple of my classmates who had received scholarships.I have no clue exact total.
