What Students Say
Likes
- The thing that I like the most is the infrastructure. All the buildings are really well built.
- There is no hostel curfew. I can go and return at anytime I want( especially at night).
- The people here are very cooperative and interactive including some of the professors. I never feel lonely here.
Dislikes
- The campus placements are not really good. There are only few companies which come for on campus placement. So, this has to get improved.
Course Curriculum Overview
As I wanted to pursue my career in Space Science since childhood , that's why I took this course. I really like to know about space. The course really prepares you for real-world applications as it includes domains such as electronics, mechanics, data analytics, IoT , Astronomy, etc. This would really help if we want to apply in ISRO, DRDO or even companies related to electronics. And if anyone wants to study further in this field , they can go in field of Astronomy or Electronics as the course is relevant to that. Teaching Method and all is good but they can make changes in their curriculum , like in 2nd year , classes should be exclusive for this course. As is it used to happen with Engineering Physics. Exams happens 2 times a semester , mid-semester and end-semester. In between there are quizzes , assignments and practical exams and they are not much difficult to solve.
Placement Experience
You become eligible to sit for placements in 7th semester , that is , in your 4th year. There are companies like Google, Amazon, Deloitte, Accenture, Axxela, American Express, BNY Melon, Adobe , Goldman Sachs, Samsung, Optum, Oracle, etc. But in other IITs which are also 2nd generation, more companies (around 50) comes for on campus placements . The highest pay is mostly for Software development and Quant roles. Last year it was around 1 Cr per annum of a Computer Science student which is really great. And the average package was around 25-26 Lakhs per annum. Last year , around 88% of all students including B.tech and M.tech got placed with decent salary.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees per semester is 40555/- for me (SC category). That is a total of 81110/- per year. So, for the whole B.Tech (four years), fees becomes 3,24,440/- This fee includes the following(per semester): Accomodation fee- 16000/- Insurance fee - 1600/- Examination fee - 500/- Laboratory fee- 1500/- Student Welfare fund- 500/- Mess fee- 17125/- This was just for SC/ST category , but for other categories like General or OBC, they have to pay 100000/- Tution fees extra. So, their total amount becomes 1,40,555/-. Also, this whole structure which I mentioned is for B.Tech only. There is other structure for PG courses.
Campus Life
The campus life here is a mix of fun and academics. There is one cultural and technical festival which is called "Fluxus" generally held in the month of March every year. This is the best part of the college life in which we dance, have fun , participate in competitions, eat, play games and all those stuff. Also , there are many other small events like E-Summit which related to entrepreneurship, Model United Nations, Inter Branch Cultural Competitions, Various Competitions in Sports, Tedx, etc. They also help in refreshing our mind by keeping us stress free. Apart from these, we have many technical and cultural clubs like Astronomy , Robotics, Electronics, Google Developer Group, Programming Clubs and many more and Art , Music, Debate, Dance, etc respectively. They all are run by students like I am too the Head of Astronomy club. They really helps us enhance our creativity and keeps us engaged throughout the semester.
Hostel Facilities
I really like the hostel facility here as it is advanced and clean. In 1st and 2nd year, you have to share room which some student(double occupancy) which is sometimes tough because the room is built for one people and you have to adjust with your roommate everytime. But from the third year, you get a single room which is very convinient. There are 2 washrooms for every 6 students which is good compared to some of the other IITs. Talking about the meal quality, it depends on caterer. There are 3 caterers in total , in which K-star (in my opinion) makes really good food. But sometimes they mess up , the taste is not up to the mark somtimes. They keep desserts every night , keeps special dinner once in a month(which is really delicious). My most favourite is breakfast , which is a whole kind of meal for me and it's healthy and delicious too. They give milk, eggs, fruits, salad , corn flakes, tea, coffee in addition. We take whatever and how much ever we want. Registration for hostel and mess is not separated , you register in it when you pay the fees per semester means it is included in semester fees(for 5 months collectively). So, my overall experience is satisfactory.
Admission
As I really have interest in Astronomy and Space Science since childhood, so during JOSAA(Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counselling, I filled up IIT Indore as my first preference and IIT Jodhpur as my 2nd .I got IIT Indore in first week so I locked it. I also applied to Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology and got accepted too. But later on I realised that it has direct ties with ISRO only. There is no other scope if we want to do something else like more related to technology. So, there were not much opportunities. I did not apply to any other colleges. We can take admission in our college by JOSAA counselling which is generally for admission in IITs/NITs/IIITs. You have to clear JEE MAINS and ADVANCED. And your 12th board percentage should be greater than 75% to be eligible for this. Now, if you just cleared JEE MAINS, you get NITs/ IIITs , else you can get IITs. There are different cutoffs for different categories like it is more for General than in OBC/SC/ST. Cutoffs depends on difficulty of paper , so there is not exact cutoff that I can tell. The overall admission experience was very smooth, I just had to upload some documents and that's it.
Faculty
The faculty-to-student ratio is 13:20 which is pretty good for a new branch. The faculty to student relationship is really good with some of the faculties. Most of them are easily approachable and interactive. One of the faculty who is liked by almost all students including me is "Dr. Bhargav Vaidya" who is also my faculty advisor. He is not much strict, understands student's issues , teaches really well , has good amount of knowledge and is friendly with students. He is the type of professor we all need (students). The other faculties are Dr. Prakash Gaikwad, Dr. Suman Majumdar, Dr. Priyanka Singh and Dr. Abhirup Dutta , they are also one of the best faculties. The most disliked faculty according to me and my whole class is Dr. Soumavo Ghosh as he is kind of strict, gives assignments every week, takes surprise quizzes, does not interact properly with students and is very short tempered. His teaching skills are also not good. Rest of the faculties are okay. Now talking about the exams, there are mainly 2 exams, mid semester and end semester. Between them there are quizzes, assignments and practical exams. The difficulty of exam depends on the professor.
Night Life
Nightlife in campus is really good, there are many outlets of food like Nescafe , Amul, Dominos, Noor's and small cafes. And there is also a night canteen which is open up till 2:00 am . One of my favourite hangout spot is Meghdoot lake, which is newly built. The view from there is just so mesmerising. In the evening , there are many sports actvities also which are open up until 8:00 pm including the gym. I go for swimming in that timing.
Other Applied Colleges
IIT Jodhpur - Indian Institute of Technology - [IITJ] | Bachelor of Science [BS] (Physics)
Since I wanted to take space science from a very long time, I got it in IIT Indore. I just kept it in for an option.
