What Students Say
Likes
- It is a lush-green campus, with heritage having the most beautiful garden filled with varieties of flowers and plants.
- There are vending machines at every major building like every Hostel, Library, i2H and iRH buildings etc. so you can grab anything quick to eat or drink.
- The campus has mini electric rickshaws that charge only 8 rupees and can get you anywhere in the campus under that cost (saves a lot of money and time).
Dislikes
- The mess food is the worst thing in this college, the mess caterers are just not ready to listen to demands of students and would keep serving the same shitty food.
- The college's fests aren't anywhere close to that of top 7-8 IITs or even top NITs and lacks behind in infrastructure for big events during any fest.
- The classrooms look pretty old and have the old-school classroom look to it.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course cirriculum isnt as outdated as it used to be 4-5 years ago due to the introduction of newer elective courses. But for non-technical branches like Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, Mining etc. it seems pretty okay.
Internships Opportunities
Many top companies like Google, Microsoft, Adobe, Goldman Sachs, British Petroleum (?1L/month stipend), Amazon, ExxonMobil, Zepto, Meesho, and PSUs offer internships to students. Stipends generally range from ?1L to ?1.5L per month for top tech companies. More than half of the batch secures an internship, with roles in coding, data analysis, management, consulting, financial services, and core sectors. A good GPA, strong projects, and decent programming skills can help students land internships early, sometimes as early as the second year. However, internship opportunities for non-technical branches like Chemical, Civil, and Mining Engineering are relatively limited, with fewer core companies offering on-campus internships. Most PSUs provide on-campus internships, while many students seek off-campus opportunities to get roles in their preferred companies.
Placement Experience
At our campus, internship opportunities begin in the 5th semester for third-year students and in the 7th semester for integrated course students (fourth year). There is a bag full of companies that offer internship during intern season, but some of the famous ones are Google, Microsoft, Texas Instruments, Samsung Research, Walmart, CISCO etc. For full-time placements, companies start recruiting in the final year, typically during the 7th semester, while for integrated course students, it happens in the 9th semester. A diverse range of companies visit our campus for placements, including Google, Microsoft, Adobe, Nvidia, Texas Instruments, Zepto, Goldman Sachs, PhonePe, Paytm, Meesho, and many more. The offered salary packages generally range from ?6 LPA to ?30 LPA, with the lowest package around ?7-8 LPA and the highest reaching ?80 LPA. On average, around 68% of students secure placements through on-campus recruitment, while the remaining students found opportunities through off-campus placements.
Fees and Financial Aid
Btech 1st year is broken down into two semester: 1st semester: 149850 rupees (tuition fees) + 18000 rupees (mess fees) + 8400 rupees (other semester charges) = 176250 rupees 2nd semester: 126400 rupees (tuition fees) + 18000 rupees (mess fees) + 8400 rupees = 152800 rupees Annual charges: 10050 Net fees (1st year): 338100 rupees only???? and then, Btech 2nd year: 3rd semester: 136450 rupees + other charges 4th semester: 126400 rupees + other charges annual charges: 10050 rupees so, net fees: 325700 rupees and it keeps repeating till 8th semester, making the entire cost of Btech in IIT ISM for a general/OBC cat. student to be around 13Lakhs Some fees are mentioned separately below: Tuition fees (per semester) = 1Lakh (for general/OBC/EWS) Caution fees: 5000 rupees (one time charge) Registration fees: 200 rupees (per semester) Admission fees: 40000 rupees (taken while opting University in JoSAA) Development fees: 2000 rupees (one time charge) Lab fees: not mentioned Other compulsory charges: ~ 2000 rupees The fee structure has one significant difference for SC/ST/PWD cat. students i.e. no tuition fees and no hostel & mess fee would be charged to them, but other fees would be applicable to them as well. Students with family income more than 6 Lakhs have to pay the entire tuition fees + hostel and mess charges (=36000+26000 anually) Students with family income less than 6 Lakhs and more than 1 Lakh have pay only 33000 rupees as tuition fees + hostel and mess charges (=52000 anually) The types of scholarships that students can avail are: MCM (merit cum means) Scholarship: If you do good in academics and have a CGPA above certain number then you would be given 10000 rupees annually. NSP (National Scholarship Portal): Provides various scholarship schemes to students from various backgrounds and can avail these scholarships by verifying necessary documents via DSW and then through NSP verification officers.

Hostel Facilities
I stay in Aquamarine Hostel, which offers double accommodation rooms. Each room has two beds, two big almirahs, two double-sided windows, shelves inside wall, two tables, two chairs, two tube lights, two bulb holders, two LAN ports, and two electric switch boards and one hell of a spacious room. The mess food is pretty average—sometimes good, sometimes not so good and mostly bad. Hostel registration happens during semester registration i.e. just before the commencement of classes. Every student must stay on campus, so living outside isn’t an option even if you live in the same city.
Admission
I got into IIT ISM Dhanbad through a nationwide conducted entrance exam known as Joint Entrance Exam (JEE). Its a two step process of firstly clearning the 1st stage called JEE Mains and then the 2nd stage, JEE Advanced. JEE Mains is mostly conducted in two sessions between the months of January and April and then JEE Advanced is conducted around the month of July/August. You can register for JEE Mains on NTA website and for JEE Advanced, the conducting IIT provides registration facility on their own websites. This exam allows the students to avail reservation benefits for caste, gender and disabilities reservation. The complete process is a hastle free and easy process but mny students face problems with documents updation and not reading the information brochure which is a must for all the students.
Faculty
The faculty to student ratio is variable in different branches like I'm in Chemical Engineering and the batch strength is around 47 so 1 prof, each subject is pretty decent. But for other departments like petroleum, CSE, ECE, EE the ratio is a complete flip, where 140-150 students are on a single faculty, so there's that! In my current semester I've: Aritra Santra Sir : Transport Phenomena Mahesh Naktuji Nandanwar Sir : Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics Bidhan Chandra Sir : Principles of Mass Transfer Soumyajit Sen Gupta Sir : Chemical Process Technology Suman Dutta Sir : Process Dynamics and Control Now as of now my favourite among them are Bidhan Sir and Mahesh Sir. Other faculty members are also good, but these hands down are my fav. ones. The only faculty member I do not like the most is Suman Sir as he's just does not gain any attention from the students and isn't much interested in teaching the subject himself. Coming to exams, there are a total of 2 main exams and 2 quizes in a semester. Quiz 1, Mid-sem exam, Quiz 2, End-sem exam now difficulty of these exams is pretty standard but for some departments, there are a few subjects that are just nuts when it comes to studying and understanding their concepts. The couse cirriculum is also pretty relevant as per non-technical branches but for technical branches it seems pretty outdated.
Interview Experience
Since I got admission after clearing JEE Mains and Advanced, my college counselling and admission process went via JoSAA and there isn't any sort of interview that any student needs to clear or give. The process is pretty simple, once you clear JEE, JoSAA conducts two mock counselling sessions to give students a hand on experience on how the counselling works in online mode, there are mainly 5 rounds for IITs and 6 for NITs.
Night Life
Hostel & Campus Timings: for Boys Hostel: 1 AM for Girls Hostel: 12AM while, Campus in-time: 10 PM Campus life at night is pretty fun and lively! Some students chill at RD Tea Shop or Barista, while others pull late-nighter and do all kinds of shenanigans around the hostel. Many stay up playing badminton, volleyball, cricket, and other games in the hostel courts. Some just go for walks around the campus anytime they feel like it. And if you get hungry, there are 24/7 vending machines and hostel canteens to overcome night cravings. Other Campus facilities are: GYM: spacious and operates in two slots: 6 AM - 10 AM (morning) and 5 PM - 10 PM (evening). The library is open from 9 AM to 9 PM, while the reading hall remains accessible until 12 AM for late-night study sessions. Places to visit outside campus: Parasnath – A serene and scenic getaway. ?? Topchanchi – A beautiful lake perfect for relaxation. ???? Maithan Dam – A must-visit for nature lovers. ????
