What Students Say
Likes
- The hostel and the fact that we all have a balcony. Rooms are very spacious considering we are all single sharing it after our first year.
- We have a common mess unlike most of the colleges out there, and boys hostel and girls hostel are very close so it doesn't feel like a vast difference. Campus is very spacious too.
- The senior junior relation. Unlike most colleges, the college provides a very inclusive relationship between juniors and seniors. People are very helpful, playful and fun. So you got your back.
Dislikes
- Infrastructure. We only have 4 buildings- 2 hostels, 1 mess and 1 acad. But the good thing is that they are finally extending the campus. They have already got the money and released the tender for the same.
- Eating places. We only have a Nescafe, for the past 6 months pur canteen has been closed and even if it is open I do believe we need more places to hangout.
- Connectivity. The airports and railway station are quite far so that becomes an issue at times but the college does provides bus if many students our travelling for drop services. They even provide food packets!!
Course Curriculum Overview
If we consider in the entirety, I would say our course curriculum is very applicable as well as flexible as per the needs of the hour. Beginning with the subjects first, we have the mindfully sorted subjects included in the semesters. In the first half of the course where we have arts subjects along we are been taught subjects like economics, psychology, sociology, legal history which is somehow very relevant to the legal subjects awe study and the society we deal with. Further the law subjects are also divided on the basis of the level of understanding and the nature of the subject. In the beginning years we get subjects like Torts, Contracts, Family law and then further to Jurisprudence and Criminal in the above semesters. Talking about the exam and difficulties, the timeline is very sorted and even flexible in case of necessity but usually in the month of December and June. I won't say they are that difficult but won't say very easy either. It's just how you apply the principles in the questions asked. We also get internship break after every semester. The marks are divided on basis of written inputs, viva, research papers and internal assessments. It's an overall growth pattern the university has tried to adopt.
Internships Opportunities
Mostly students apply for internship on their own in their desired firms or law chambers and see to the stipend on their own. But college helps too for internships in tier 1 firm. Only requirement is for you to be in 3rd year. Stipend at would be from 5k- 20k, considering law interns don't get paid much.
Placement Experience
5th year (final year students) are the only ones eligible for placement. You can work on your own to get one before that. The placement cell has very recently become active and so we need to wait 6 more months to see the real ratio of placements made. However, most students here either pursue LLM, or they get placement offers before the college can provide them or they simply go for preparing judiciary, govt counsels, or other jobs.
Fees and Financial Aid
We have an yearly fee of around 2.24 Lacs. Fee is taken semester wise. Odd semesters fee are usually more since they charge hostel fee too which is around 19k and this is the charge for the entire year. To break it down further (even semester)- semester fee- 55k, internet charges- 5.5k, support and service charges- 6.6k, multi media and library- 5.5k, academic activities - 4.4k, examination fee- 2.2k, maintenance fee- 5.5k and mess charges-19.3k. The fee is kinda doable, considering most NLUs charge more. The location of the college is pretty decent too and so is the weather throughout the year. Food is decent. Not bad and not good either. Internet on most days works well. Library provides decent facilities, they are also building new building for library and adding more subscriptions so it's good. Hostels are very good, each room has a balcony and that just makes life easier on so many levels. 2024-2029 batch onwards room sharing is a compulsion till 3rd year but batches before that had a year of room sharing and after that they all have their own personal rooms. BBA LLB is also being introduced from next semester. We also have bus that takes you to market and so it's easier for convenience. Though there are no eating or marketing spots nearby, autos charge a little and they move frequently.
Campus Life
We have one annual fest, and one that happens in winter semester. The college is very fun. At least one DJ Night happens every semester (it's usually more than 1). Students play sports and have various competition all the time. Some are even sponsored by Adv and Judges. We have a decent library so books are accessible. We get SCC, Live Law, Manupatrs etc's subscription. If you have demads, you can place in front of library committee, they try to get something asap. We have smart boards in the class and a very good sound system. Ac's are available and even mics in case the teacher's voice is inaudible. We have a large variety of student run clubs and committee. Some for fun like cultural, literary society, sports club etc. and some for academic purposes like legal aid, human rights, gender justice, criminal, moot court etc etc. They keep you busy throughout if you are an active member.
Hostel Facilities
I have no one in my knowledge who has rented flats. Either people live in hostel or they have family in the city so they travel. Most people are hosteller (98%). Registration for the hostels happen on the day of admission. You come, you pay, you get the room allotted and you shift. The payment to be made is of 19 k per year. Rooms have one balcony. And most people have single sharing so the room is very spacious and has light. It's also not very noisy honestly. We have to share bathrooms and washrooms though. But we also got hand showers. Meals are decent. Somedays good, somedays bad but on most days edible. And we also get snacks and all for 1o.3k per sem. So it's good.
Admission
Okay so in NLUs it doesn't work like that. You don't chose a college, you are allotted one based on your CLAT score and rank. Ours is tier 2 college and I got it based on my CLAT rank. The entire procedure for the same is that we have to fill out the CLAT form. Fill in the preference, give the test. Get the scorecard and then after counselling rounds (there are 5) all the selected students are allotted the college. Counselling sessions are basically, they provide you with college, you either accept, or hold or reject it. You can also exit the procedure any time. Once allotted, you basically need to keep checking the site of the college and get regular updates regarding the admission process. There are also vacancy available. After the entire procedure is done and everyone's allotted a college, you get to keep looking at your dream college's site and apply as soon as you see the vacancy notice. After that also they accept the people with better rank, it you are lucky you get in, or you simply stay where you are. And then either accept it or give CLAT again.
Faculty
Faculties on most days are approachable. They even help you out and listen to your issues. Even the personal ones. There are some who are bad, but then nothing's all good, right? Till now I have had the opportunity to interact with afew faculties only considering I'm in my 2nd year but I loved Shweta ma'am, Soni Bhola ma'am and Syamala ma'am. Ashish sir and Pattnaik sir are very good too. They are all helpful and that's all the reason I have for liking them. I am not naming the people I don't like for my personal reasons. Coming to examination pattern. It's very doable honestly. We have a 20 marks mid term, and then 30 marks for research papers and vivas and presentations. 50 marks for end term. The only issue is that the faculties don't give great marks, though the pattern has changed over the past 3 sems, but still needs improvement. Most students pass the exams. Failing ratio is very less and it's mostly because of their attitude. I believe it's very hard to fail here.
Interview Experience
No we didn't have either of these. We simply gave the exam, got our scores and ranks and based on that got into selection process and then got a college allotted. All you need to do it prepare yourself and give the CLAT exam
Night Life
We have a good night life actually. We have gyms in both the hostels, cafeteria is Nescafe and it's one so you would find people there all the time. The curfew for hostels is 11pm so it's very decent. We also have a tuck shop which is like a general Store and you have it all (on most days). Curfew for campus is 9 pm which is again very decent and the time is for both girls and boys so there is no discrimination. Inside the campus people usually hangout at Nescafe, basketball, canteen. Outside the campus the hangout spot is binay, baba dhaba and similar small food stops.
