Inside IIT Kanpur: A journey Through Acedeimcs and Campus Life

Course curriculum is mentioned before the registration of the semester in First course handouts. Courses are very well compiled, as expected from an institute of such stature. Giving a well around theoretical and practical knowledge of it. The structure of examinations is evenly spread throughout the whole semester, keeping the students busy all the time. Something that can be improved upon.

Companies like Barclays, City bank, etc offers many internship opportunities for Around 2 months during the summer breaks. They also pay very handsome amount for your troubles. Also PPO might be offered to you. Some Roles are offered as analyst intern, media intern, etc. The interns are bestowed with some work on a project already going on in the company, under supervision of company seniors.

IITs are known for their great strike rates in placements accross all the disciplines. Companies like Google, microsoft, facebook, etc comes every year and offers huge amount of money, going as high as several crores, and averaging around 12,00,000 rs. Data Analyst, software developer, etc are some of the profiles that are very popular. I personally want to pursue PhD after my masters.

Per year its around 60,000 yearly. Which consists of tution fee, Hostel fee, etc. Mess fee comes seperately monthly depending on the food consumption in the mess. For B.Tech the fees is around 150000 per semester. You get scholarship opportunities under FBM, MCM. And also other academic scholarship, institute sponsored, based upon CPI and Project performance.

Major fests are held in October and February. Antaragni is our cultural fest, whereas Teckhkriti the technological one. Library offers a vast variety of books across all the genres. Online library is also available. All the classrooms are smart and Fully air conditioned. Additionally there is smoke detector. All the Sports, including mountain climbing types activity, are available inside campus with coaching facilities opening for twice a year . There are two gymnasium also. There are roughly 12 clubs solely run by students,, this includes art, sports, movie, quiz, etc

Rooms are double seater, with 2 tables, 2 chairs and 2 wardrobes. 24x7 high-speed wifi. Meal menu changes every month. Overall food quality is good. Registration is done along with the admission process. Hostels cost you around 13,000 per semester, with around 3000rs per month for mess.

The Mathematics Dept of IITK is second to non. It is known for its pure as well as applied mathematics faculty. Therefore it was my first choice. For M.Sc. admission in IITs, one has to qualify for IIT JAM examination, conducted by IITs by themselves. Getting a rank around 100 can push you into top 3 IITs of our choice. Overall admission process is very smooth, with almost everything done online.

For most of the courses the class size doesn't exceed 35. Student to faculty ratio is also quiet low. Professors are very approachable. The exam types and pattern is solely decided by the professor, but most common is as follows: Quizzes Mid semester exam End semester.

There is no curfew time for any hostel. The canteens inside hostel are open till 2am, with DOAA canteen running 24x7. Boys can go inside girls hostel (and vice versa) between 6am and 12am. Library runs from 9am to 12am midnight. Most famous hangouts are CCD, Mamam Mio, DOAA canteen.
