Student Life at IIT Kharagpur

In my department that is Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Kharagpur is the top notch and well known department for steel technology and as I have interest in studying about steel as well as other materials, I choose the best option available. The curriculum reaches the world class applications as well as hands on sessions. But somewhere it lacks in adapting to new generation as well as there is not much of practical application. Exams are being conduct in 1 months like after one month of mid sem end sem occurs. So difficulty level also depends on the professors and I will say it as not that difficult if you have study well

For interships we also have career development centre which helps us in oncampus internship. Same as the placements we have to sit in the internship tests and interview for different companies. Depending on the profile of the students like SDE, Data analyst, Core Engineering, Consultant, Product Managers a lot of top companies approaches with stipends ranging from 40k to 4Lakhs per month. Also students can apply for foreign research projects through the Foreign Training Portal of IIT Kharagpur as per their interest providing a wide range of opportunities

For Btech students they are eligible in their 7th semester where as for Dual Degree students they are eligible in their 9th Semester for placements. More than 150 companies visits. Companies like Google, Microsoft, Flipkart, McKinsey, Bain & Co, BCG and other top companies with a recruitment of more than 1200 students. Highest package given this year is 2.14 Cr. And average package is around 15 LPA. This year more than 60% students are placed in 1st phase where as 2nd phase will start soon and I will join PhD after getting degree

Per semester total fee is 1 Lakh 40 thousands where 1Lakh is the tuition fees and 40 thousands is the mess and hall charges etc. If you are a sc, st student then 1Lakh tution fee is waived. And also if your annual income is below 1 lakh it's waived and you have to give only the 40 thousands per semester for general or obc students.

Overall experience of campus life is quite amazing. I get to learn a lot of things along with academics. I have been a part of the organising team of Kshitij, Tech Fest of IIT Kharagpur where I learn a lot about the soft skills. The cultural fest of IIT Kharagpur is spring fest which is quite famous. Every type of book is available in the Central Library of IIT Kharagpur and it's digitalized as well for everyone's reach. The class room is also well maintained and digitalized. A lot of extracurricular activities is offered in the campus like NCC, NSS, NSO and NCA where student in the first year can choose to join any any of them for two years. Also GCs were organised every year for such students. Regarding student run groups, IIT kgp has a lot number of clubs, societies for the welfare of students community.

I have applied for NIT Rourkela, IIT bhubaneswar, IIT BHU, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi as well as NISER. Also as per my rank I got selected in the colleges, But as IIT Kharagpur is more nearer from my home and also the oldest IIT with a very good reputation and Alumni reach I choose it over others. No, I did not get a rejection though but yes I can say my dream was to join IIT Bombay CS branch as every other students but due to the rank I didn't able to get that. But I'm happy with my college. Admission process for IIT Kharagpur is the JEE Advanced, You have to qualify the JEE advanced with a good score also you have to qualify overall subjects as well as each subject. for example if the cutoff for overall score is 70 and individual subjects like math, physics, chemistry is 20 each. Then you have to qualify both the cut offs

The faculty to students ratio is quite good. As the faculties are quite cooperative it's easy to reach them as well as a student in the year gets two faculty advisors whom the student can reach for the rest of the years of he or she faces any issues. In a semester there are mostly 2 exams, one is mid sem other is end sem. But depending on the professors they can took class tests. The faculties I like the most is Prof Sankha Mukherjee, He is a expert in his field as well as very supportive. and others professors are also quite good.

For admission in to IIT Kharagpur there is no such things like GD, You have to go through JEE advanced Examination and have clear overall cutoff as well as subject wise cut off and also score a good marks. For its preparation basically 11th and 12th class concepts are important with practicing a lot of questions

Night life of kgp students is quite good. Most of the students in kgp do hangouts in night. The hostel gyms, music rooms and other public areas are open 24 hours. For food, we have night canteens in each hall as well for the students which open till 4am. There is no such timing for coming to the hostel. But yes you can't go outside the campus gate after 11pm till 4am if you don't have any valid reasons. The most hangout places is clock tower, gymkhana, Lake side, ADDA, Helipad( most beautiful sunrise point), Nehru Museum. Also it's safe to roam around in night as the locals respect the IIT students a lot. But sometimes snakes and other wild animals can be seen as it's located in a rural area
