What Students Say
Likes
- As a student of SLN Medical college and hospital, I can confidently say that this place is amazing. The city itself is absolutely beautiful with amazing views and landscapes that make you feel like you're living in a hill station.
- The college is well planned with the hospital located just across the road , making clinical exposure super convenient. Academically, everything is on point, with a structured curriculum and excellent teaching.
- The location of college is another big plus with the main market at 1 km and railway station being just 2-3km away from campus, ensuring everything you need is within easy reac. The hostels & college are well equipped with all necessary facilities.
Dislikes
- The campus is relatively smaller compared to some other medical colleges, which might feel a bit limiting but there's a super specialty hospital under construction which should improve the infrastructure in the future.
- One downside is that you won't find any fancy restaurants, cafes or malls around here. The nightlife and party scenes are almost non-existent except for the college functions. For malls, you'd need to travel 20km to either Jeypore pr Semiliguda.
- Another thing is Koraput is far from the hometowns of most students. There's only one train to Bhubaneswar and two trains to Western odisha, which makes travel a bit inconvenient. This can be a concern for those who prefer frequent trips to home
Course Curriculum Overview
I would rate the course curriculum at SLN Medical College & Hospital, Koraput, as highly relevant and comprehensive. It provides a solid foundation in medical sciences, with a good balance of theory and practical exposure, essential for real-world applications and further academic pursuits. The curriculum’s focus on subjects like anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry in the early years laid a strong foundation. Clinical exposure, though gradual, helps prepare us for patient care and real-life scenarios. They have recently started PowerPoint presentation in the 2nd year by students, group studies and electives after 3rd year exams that has improved the academics. Areas of improvement could be a little more interactive teaching methods including case discussion and stimulation based technique. Exams usually comprise of three internals that are conducted throughout the year after completion of certain topics followed by the one main university exam.
Internships Opportunities
You'll be doing the internship in the hospital itself which is just across the road. The hospital has excellent patient load given the fact that it's the only big hospital in the southern odisha region. The interns are provided with single roomed hostel in the campus.
Fees and Financial Aid
For first year, it is 52256 including the course and hostel fees. For rest 3 years, it is 34000 again including the course and hostel fees. There's just a payment of 1400 as examination fee every year before the proffs. In the 5th year, you're paid 42k as stipend as you're an intern now.
Campus Life
There are functions all around the year. But usually the festivities begin around August- September from the Ganesh puja. There are cultural nights, DJ nights, competitions and many more events. There are different clubs starting from Journal, academics, sports, social service guild, cultural and many more that organize events and competitions throughout the year balancing out the academics and co curricular activities. There's a medical exhibition called "gyanjyoti" Which is organized around September where students are alloted different subjects (anatomy, physiology, fmt, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology, clinical studies, psm etc). Each subject forms a team and every individual is given a topic. Students make charts and models to explain their topic. About 10-15 schools come to attend this exhibition which helps students to develop their public skills and ofcourse put their medical knowledge and skills to use. There are other events like diwali nights, new year nights, holi event, saraswati puja that are celebrated time to time. There are medical camps, blood donation camps and rallies for AIDS or likewise organized as well. Then there's this Annual Fest named Plexus that's organized every year which is a line up of events starting from quizzes, poetry, open mic, everg sports event, photography competition, videography competition , dance and song competition and the followed by concerts , stand up comic nights and DJ night. The campus life is well balanced.
Hostel Facilities
Hostels are well equipped with all facilities. There are lifts which is necessary since it's a mountain area. Water coolers and geysers are installed in every floor. Geysers are a necessity given the weather of the area. Rooms are pretty spacious . There are 3 students alloted to each room. You'll be given with bed, desk and a chair and a cupboard of your own. Even after 3 beds, 3 desks and 3 Cupboards(fixed to the wall), there's still a lot of space left in the middle (which can probably fit three more beds). You'll have amazing views from your Window( of mountains and plateaus and beautiful clouds). The hostel fees comes around 12k per year. You've to pay differently for mess. There are 2-3 mess that you can choose from and meal quality is okayish. (Not that bad and not that good) you'll just get bored of same taste and quality but then you always have the option to change the mess or even eat outside. The restaurants around the campus are pretty affordable. There's one just in front of the college which charges just like the mess does but of course with better taste.
Admission
All the government medical colleges accept NEET scores. So everything come down to NEET scores and your rank in the exam. I got the college through state quota. Out of 8 government medical colleges, SLN MCH, Koraput was my 4th option after the 3 top colleges including SCB MCH, MKCG MCH & VIMSAR, Burla solely because SLN MCH had hospital conveniently located across the road. I didnt get into other three college because of their high cutoffs. You've to appear for NEET which is a national level exam of three subjects including physics, chemistry and biology. If you're applying through All india Quota, the rank must be within 18k and if you're applying through state quota, it has been varying from 600 state rank to 850 state rank ( or AIR 20K - AIR 29K). Talking about marks, the last year's cutoff was around 650 marks.
Faculty
At SLN Medical College & Hospital, Koraput, the faculty-to-student ratio is manageable, ensuring that students receive individual attention and support. The faculty-student relationship is generally positive; professors are approachable and always willing to clarify doubts, which is crucial for a medical college setting. The exam structure at SLN MCH Koraput is rigorous but fair. There are regular internal assessments, along with university exams. Usually there are 3 internals every year before the final Medical Board Examination. The number of students who fail to clear the exams is relatively low. Recently the first year students have performed really well and the college ranked 4th among other medical colleges results. The PG results are usually remarkable from the SLN MCH. The course curriculum is quite relevant to the current medical field, and it is regularly updated to keep up with new medical advancements. While some areas could benefit from more practical exposure, the curriculum does provide a solid foundation for medical students, preparing them well for both exams and real-world medical practice.
Night Life
The college campus has gym, cafeteria and library. But the nightlife in this city is quite non existent since the city shuts down by 10pm. There are restaurants around and infact pretty near. Kruti coffee is probably the only cafe you can find. There are no such hangout places like clubs or pubs around. But yes you have natural beauties to explore. From Deomali to numerous waterfalls, then yellow and lavender flower season. There are a lot many mountain tops with stunning views. For fancy restaurants and malls, you've to go to jeypore or semiliguda which are around 20km away. There's no exam campus or hostel timings but probably 11 pm is safe to be back. The locality is pretty safe to roam around at night and hostel life is as usual never shuts down at night but yeah, if you're looking for clubs and anything, that doesn't exist in this city.
