What Students Say
Likes
- The infrastructure is excellent with almost all facilities available that a student would need. They’ve recently installed air conditioners in every classroom along with smart screens to ensure adaption to latest tech.
- Cafe Skypiea at the rooftop is a popular spot for hangouts with great snacks to munch on during breaks or free periods.
- Faculty incorporates experiential learning in class rather than traditional lecture methods to train students for the corporate world
Dislikes
- Proper notes or study material is at times not given, depending on the faculty, which makes it hard to know what guide or material to study from
- More efficient number of staff in cafes would be appreciated during most crowded times
- There is no range in the basement cafe which makes payment difficult
Course Curriculum Overview
Experiential learning is mainly used while teaching and concepts from 11th and 12th are taught combined with further advanced concepts to recap the important topics as well as educate those who came from streams of science and/or humanities. Moodle is used for assignments and projects which must be completed within the given time. Timing of exams may clash with other programs and it is the responsibility of students to effectively handle these things. For internal exams, two exams are held on the same day, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon, to ensure no time wastage.
Internships Opportunities
Big 4 companies provide several internship opportunities to students here under the field of accounting and auditing. As a first year student, I am not fully aware of all the opportunities and its details.
Placement Experience
Students become eligible for campus placements from third year, to my best knowledge. The Big 4 provide great opportunities to students here. I am not aware of the packages exactly as this is my first year. Placement percentage is 27%. I plan to clear all ACCA exams within the four year program and get a placement for work experience and then pursue M.Com or clear CFA exams for further add on to my qualifications.
Fees and Financial Aid
For B.Com (Hons.) with ACCA program, the total fee is 8,75,000 with 2,18,750 being paid per annum. Fees for B.Com only include 90,000 per annum. These fees do not include study material fee and books will have to be bought separately or from outside suppliers or may be accessed from the library. There are scholarships based on merit and caste categories which may be referred through official government sites to avail the same if all requirements are met.
Campus Life
The biggest event held here is Splendore, usually every December and invites people from other colleges as well as sponsors and is held for two days. There are also other events for programs other than commerce. Recently there was a self defense program held for girls for self protection and it was covered by the 24 news channel. The library expands across four floors and contains a wide variety of resources, study guides and research publications. All classrooms have smart screens installed for best learning experience. There are clubs mandatory to join in relation to commerce as well as other optional clubs to join based on your likes such dance, music, tourism, NSS. Club meetings are held on Tuesday afternoons which has actual classes only in the mornings. 1st, 3rd and 5th Saturdays are working days but only in the mornings like Tuesdays.
Hostel Facilities
In Nirmala Hostel, I've taken a 3 person sharing room with an annual rent of 1,02,000 (common bathroom). There are also 2 person sharing spaces with an attached bathroom but very limited in number. Both nonveg and veg meals are served while Friday serves only veg food along with payasam. The menu is good but repeated every week which may lead to you getting sick of the food. Hostel application was given on the day of the admission process for college and other details will be provided through mail later on.
Admission
This was the only college I applied to in Kerala because of the reviews I heard from family and friends who have already gone to this college. They are doing extremely well in their careers due to the placement opportunities and training received from here. For admission, marks secured in 12th is mainly considered and they had mentioned the cut off was 93% for ACCA but there are also others in my class who have scored in 80s so it may depend on application ratio as well. The admission day process was hectic and took an entire day and was crowded from the number of parents waiting to submit their documents for their child. Hostel applications were also given on this day.
Faculty
All faculties seem approachable while a handful of them are hard to cope with due to different teaching styles by different faculties every semester. All faculties are extremely knowledgeable of their field and are always ready to help in case of any assistance. Exams are held every semester in a certain manner. Two sets of internal exams known as CCA or CAE are held along with an end semester examination. This pattern continues every semester. For ACCA, classes are held for the exempted foundation courses along with mock exams for the same whose results are not completely considered anywhere and are only for our reference. Actual ACCA exams are attempted in the second and third year of the program for the papers, SBL, SBR, AAA, and AFM. To my knowledge, there's a pass rate of 40%-60% for ACCA while B.Com can, in comparison, easily be cleared.
Night Life
There is are three gyms within the campus. Gym for girls are at the rooftop of Carmel Block while a gym for boys is near the basketball court. The cafeterias are well stocked with tasty snacks but require more efficient labour in terms of number of people. There is a canteen near the basketball court, a basement cafe known as Cloud9 in Carmel, and a rooftop cafe, Skypiea, with similar food at affordable rates. Classes are from 9 am to 4:30 pm with lunch break from 12:40 pm to 1:40 pm. Girls hostel curfew is 7 pm. Famous hangout places outside include Al Taza, Emarath, Lulu Mall. Locality is not too safe at night.
