Course Curriculum Overview

4

The curriculum topics including molecular biology, Animal biotechnology, plant biotechnology, microbiology, Genetic engineering, AI in biotechnology, cancer biology, bioinformatics, and industrial biotechnology. Introducing technology into biology including practical and project work made it an interesting course and i had to choose it.

Internships Opportunities

3

International internship opportunities are available at karunya. The name of the program is IAESTE- International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience. An amount of 2500 should be paid to be a part of it. Around 80 countries are members of this program.

Placement Experience

4

The placement opportunities at karunya is better when compared to other universities. From 7th semester, students are eligible for attending placements. Students should have cgpa above 6 with no backlogs as a criteria of attending placements. So far many IT companies like quantiphy, Infosys, Accenture, Sutherland, internzvalley, conserve solutions and other companies for recruitment. Biotechnology core companies will come for recruitment at the final semester. The highest package came for recruitment till now is 8 to 12 lakhs per annum for CS department.

Fees and Financial Aid

My year of admission at karunya Institute of technology and sciences is 2021. During that time, the admission and provisional fees was 50,000. Tuition fee for biotechnology was 89,250 per semester. Due to my 75%+ in 12th grade, I got a reduction of 20,000 in my first year of the 4 year course. The hostel accomodations were 14,500 for a four seater room, 22,500 for a double seater room and, 26,500 for a single seater room per semester respectively. AC Other than scholarships provided by my university, government scholarships for students from government aided schools, female students from Tamil Nadu Government aided schools and parent's annual income of less than 2,00,000 are provided.

Campus Life

4

In the department of biotechnology, annual retreat and student organized symposium - EVOGEN is conducted every year. Active participation of students from all the years including organizing the event, volunteering, presenting papers and posters and other activities. books from English novels to competitive exam preparative books are available in the library. The library at karunya is a 3 storied building with AC, computer facilities, magazines, newspapers and wide range of books guides and reference books.

Hostel Facilities

3

Hostel facilities are good. from 3rd year, single rooms are available for students. The room is big enough for a single person to stay with bed, hangers, cupboard, shelves, study table and chairs. The maintainance of the bathroom and toilets are also good and cleaned everyday. The meal at karunya is the best. Totally 5 mess - Andhra, kerela, south, north and NRi is available. You can choose one at the beginning of the semester. The mess food is good with different menus and tasty desserts. The registration process for hostel accommodations is done through online fee portal. The affordability of mess accomodation is low as the mess fee is around 29,000 per semester. Karunya is located at the outer region i.e 1 hour away from coimbatore. So good pgs or rental rooms are mostly not available in reachable distance.

Admission

I applied to few colleges for biotechnology like Loyola for B.Sc applied biotechnology. I applied for other courses also other than biotechnology like mass media and communication at Christ University. I got selected on all the colleges I applied but the reason I chose Biotechnology at karunya is: location of the university is at coimbatore which is only 5 hours travel from my home town madurai. I found biotechnology interesting and wanted to puruse my Carrier in it. Since I was a corona batch ( 2021), the admission process was online. I had to fill the admission form provided by the University and paid 50,000 as a confirmation fees. The eligibility for B.tech biotechnology was maths or computer and biology in 12th grade. The admission process was smooth with the guidance provided by the University.

Faculty

3

The faculty members of my department has mixed reviews. Personally, I like Dr. Muthukumar Nadar from division of Biotechnology, my project guide. He is a researcher and scientist but also a very humble, kind and a motivating person. You can always reach out to him for any issues any time. Faculty - Student relationships are okay considering their availability. Most of the faculties are helpful and helps in academic comeback. Number of exams for my course - Biotechnology is 7 theory papers and 2 labs per semester. It was very difficult to concentrate on all the subjects and increase the cgpa. Around 30% of students have arrears in my department ( final year ). Coaching classes and supplementary exams are conducted for them regularly.

Night Life

1

Karunya is strict is these things. No night life experience at karunya. Girls hostel campus will be closed by 8:30 pm for study hour till 10:30 pm. No late night stay at University campus is allowed. No girls and boys interaction once entered the hostel is allowed. In girl's hostel campus, gym, parlours, food shops, department store facilities are present. If you want to go out on holidays. A form should be filled with in and out date and time, address and parent's mobile number. Only with parent's permission outing is allowed. No fun activites or night life is allowed by Karunya. The best hangout place at karunya is the canteen and cafe coffee day.

Other Applied Colleges

Loyola College | Bachelor of Science [B.Sc] (Advanced Zoology & Biotechnology)

I had a phone call session with one of my professor during Biotechnology admission. I was convinced about the laboratory facilities, faculty experiences and wide exposure to biotechnology field at karunya Institute of technology and sciences.

Placement Experience:

Placements are good at our college with a 75 - 80 % of placements every year. Students can sit in placements if they complete 135 credits by the 6th semester and in placements most of the companies offer a 6 months Internships and then full time offer so it is better to complete all credits in 7th semester.
