Course Curriculum Overview

4

The course facilitates learning in each and every department of the medical college which gives us accessibility on how each wing works..giving us an idea to help decide where we see our future. Since we start clinical practice from our 2nd year and interactions with the patients continously it prepares us for almost every situation, since it is a government college we see all kinds of people from all backgrounds, giving us a different type of exposure. Some departments have fewer faculty making it difficult for them to care for the students and patients at the same time so the students maybe left unattended. Exams occur almost on a monthly basis, some harder than the others, but all are quite easy to pass with adequate studying.

Internships Opportunities

4

We get to intern in our own medical college and the district hospital nearby our college. We are made to work as doctors giving a great exposure and also a good stipend to meet our requirements. It is only after the four and half year course that we enter our internship.

Fees and Financial Aid

the tuition fees changes yearly, it is a four and half year course with an additional year of intermship where stipend will be provided, 1st year we r required to pay a sum of 23,500 rupees and there are additional charges for record books and labs..the 2nd yr fees had increased to around 26,000 and from 3rd yr it is almost 30,000. The students having reservations like SC and ST are exempted from paying the tuition fees every year but are required to pay the rest of the fees, their are scholarships available for them to avoid paying hostel fees as well like the e-grantz scholarship.

Campus Life

4

Our campus life is one that needs to be talked about, its very colorful and has an edge above other colleges, we have programs very often and it is difficult to get bored here despite being a medical college, all sorta of programmes are conducted from sports tournaments like our annual vertigo and arts competitions like our annual plasma and fine arts, some maybe intercollege, some maybe interbatch tournaments but they are all very competitive and action packed. We have a huge library where most medical books and journals can be found also their are books for leisure reading too. Every classroom has a projector and a smartboard, all classes are taken with the help of a powerpoint or occasionaly videos are shown to engage the students. Sports and extracurriculars are all available in our college, their is a sports club and many other clubs like the drama club, academic club, thira club, etc. Their is another club called punarjinni which focusses on helping the patients that come here, fund collections are done often to provide care for the people who need it, their are many wings like the drug wing, hair wing, and blood wing.

Hostel Facilities

4

Hostels are okay, they arent very great but comparatively to the better side considering it is a government hostel, 4 people are sharing one room, we each have a cot provided, and their is only one fan, the bathrooms are common and so are the washrooms which may lead to some cleanliness issues at times but their is a cleaner who occasionaly comes every week. The meals are quite okay, it is run by the students itself so the menu is not bad but there is an issue that the food might get over rather quickly at times, usually the food provided is okay but there are times when the food doesnt taste great. We have to fill an admission form to get into the hostel, it is quite cheap, onyl 40 rupees per month and a daily mess fee of 90 rupees.

Admission

The major reason is that this college is much closer to my home, i had gotten admission in jipmer but then i realized where i study doesnt make a difference, if im here id be able to frequent my home much more easily when i get a holiday. I had gotten rejected from the government medical college of calicut because it is the most sought after college in our state, my rank was not enough to get in the calicut college. The admission process is by writing a competitive exam called NEET which is run by the NTA, lakhs of students attempts this exam every year making it very difficult to crack the same.

Faculty

4

Their are plenty of faculties, along with the multitude of students joining every year there are a good amount of faculty to look after them. The teachers are approachable but we have to make an effort if we require any help, they are almost always available though I liked Jahana Mam in the Obstetrics and Gynecology department as she was clarifying all my doubts and was very caring despite her busy schedule. I disliked an anatomy teacher by the name of Anjali as she was very harsh and emotionally bullied many students. There are plenty of exams every week of varying difficulties and marks, but if adequate studying is done all exams can be passed. Around 10-15 students have failed. The course curriculum is very effectice as they are following a competitive based medical curriculum.

Night Life

4

Usually all the common accesible spaces close by 9 pm, the cafeterias closeby all close by 12 am. Hostel doesnt have any curfew, we can come in or go out at any time but the ladies hostel they need to inform the warden if they are leaving late at night. The college class timings usually are from 8am to 4pm. There are a few famous hangout spots in our campus like the jibeesh park which has a nice ambience, then there is the triangle where lots of meetings occur, we have an amphitheater too. Its pretty safe around the campus at all times.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I chose this course not due to the curriculum..i qlways dreamed of becoming a good doctor. The level.of satisfaction you get in this profession wont be anywhere else. The modernization of curriculum has stressed on the clinical aspects which i think is the core of medicine. We have been taken to bedside and taught to examine patients diagnose the case and interpret imaging. Also the skill lab clears the obstruction we face in a real life like we are being trained in BLS and ALS. Our junior batches are also taken to trivandrum medical college to see autopsy which in fact is a real opportunity. The course could improve in a way that apart from academics it must give importance to sports arts also which is not promoted in our college. Also revisions classes can be made effects by conducting small test papers chapter wise instead of taking chapters on repetition. Exams are almost done in an effective way. The course is actually very difficult compared to others. So much effort has to be put in from both students and Teacher's side.

The hostel and college infrastructure are a little poor compared to other colleges but it is expected with the minimal fees given. There are a lot of festivals and programs and a healthy political atmosphere. The non violent conflicts between the two opposing parties lead to good development in the college.
