What Students Say
Likes
- I really liked the clubs and availability of almost each of the clubs anyone wants. There are clubs for Anime, Art, Dramatics, Dance, Music, Cooking, Quiz, Cubes&puzzles, photography, literary club and what not. This makes the college life more fun.
- The coding culture is top tier and almost every 2nd student you will meet in 2nd year+ will be deadly in technology. It may be either ML or either CP, almost everyone is up to something even mechanical guys or chemical guys will be doing CP.
- Campus life is not so bad, the college is so underrated it's campus life is way better than anyone can imagine. The lush greenery of this college just makes your day better. The well planned designs of buildings and architecture is goated too.
Dislikes
- I didn't like the weather specifically, it'll make you lose 300ml of sweat easily (not even kidding). Even in Monsoons the scorching heat is such a pain. The winters are extreme too and in winters you will have to experience that 10 centigrade temp.
- The food quality is something you will have to adjust with, the food is worse as any other IIT or college (unless it's some thapar or expensive college). You'll need to get habitual with water and minor inconveniences in food so one needs to adapt.
- The college is huge, people need campus life and a big college. You get everything here but when you need to drive your cycle 3km to acad block in sun. You will wish it was some Bangalore college with 19 acre campus because 503 acres is huge man.
Course Curriculum Overview
I would rate the course curriculum as mid In first year it will be same as what IIT system follows but from second year it gets quite interesting due to the independency of being a Gen-2 IIT. It's an advantage and also the BTech MnC branch in my case, particularly this was one of the bigger reasons why I chose this college, it's actually really good and the course structure competes with CS in my case. Curriculum focuses a lot on practical hours and applications and that is the reason why it gets hectic a lot but it is worth it in the end. Course curriculum could definitely be improved but its not easy as almost all IITs follows the same "common" syllabus for first year. Only private colleges use a specific branchwise course from 1st year so its hard. Their are 2 exams in one semester - Mid sem and End sem. Difficulty, I would say its hard because of absolute grading from this year, but these 2 exams only hold at max 70% weightage the rest is through quiz. Also depends on professor.
Internships Opportunities
Many companies come to college for internships including Google, Microsoft, Atlassian, Goldman sachs etc. for tech and Unilever etc. for core They hire about 8-10 interns each from college. In 3rd year internship is necessary as its a part of the course so you have to do it anyways. The stipend is pretty good and goes upto 2.4 lakh even. Projects are also necessary in 4th year itself so newer course curriculum covers almost everything thats crucial.
Placement Experience
Students become eligible for placement after semester 7. The data for 2023-2024 is not here so here is the data for 2022-2023. Many companies including some MAANG - Microsoft, Amazon, Google comes to the campus. Some other companies including Atlassian, Sprinklr,Goldman sachs, Morgan stanley are regularly hiring companies. Majority of these big companies mentioned here, almost each of them hire 10+ interns every year. Last year the highest package was 1.37 Crore and 6 people had CTCs >1crore. Average package was 15.73 LPA overall including all branches. While CS average package was 35.57 LPA and Electrical had 24.85LPA as average. 58% was overall placements including all branches and branchwise it varies - 98.6% for CS, 83.6% for Electrical etc. My plan after getting the degree is for doing a job or who knows maybe pursue higher studies further.
Fees and Financial Aid
The year wise fees I am paying (atleast for this year) is 83170+44032 (1st and 2nd semester) so total 127202 per year However Normally the fees is 327202 per year I have to pay 127202 because 1 lakh per semester gets deducted due to me belonging to Most economically backward students category (Annual income is less than 1 lakh). The other batchmates who do not belong to this category have to pay 327202 per year (which will be lesser in further years as in first year caution money and other refundable fees are paid, however we aren't informed about it anymore than this)
Campus Life
There are 4-5 major fests in IIT Patna. First one is Fresher's party which usually happens in august or september. Known as nebula. (accessible to 1st years) Then Infinito which happens in October and is the sports fest of college.(It includes online games too) Another one is TedX which happens in september usually. Another fest is Celesta which happens in October or november too which is the tech fest of IIT Patna. Lastly but not the least, the biggest fest - Anwesha which happens in january or february. There are tons of books in the central library available. You will get almost every sort of book in the library and there is tenure of 45 days to issue it without a single penny for us. There are journals, thesis and phd papers available there too. Sports activities are aptly available you'll get so many sports to play either in gymkhana or in sports complex (including squash, TT etc). Gymkhana is the student body here which handles everything and clubs are just next level here.
Hostel Facilities
Hostel facilities are decent compared to Gen-1 IITs its better. You get a room in triple sharing in 1st yr but its very spacious enough to accomodate them. You get three desks and three chairs alongwith 2 cupboard with 2 separate divisions each so 4 cupboards. In hostel you will get water coolers on each floor (2) and washing machines are available on 3/7 floors totalling to about 8 washing machines (4 only work). Meal quality is okayish, this is something which isnt really good here, you would need to adjust with the food quality after coming to IITs and it becomes part of process. Menu is diverse though and almost all states dishes are present. The menu is pre-determined by mess committee (students need to give interview and they get selected). The student body is very strong and every representative has to go through some interviews or evaluation to reach there. (It's competitive) Registration process is quite easy and hostel is very very affordable (less than 2K per month).
Admission
I chose this college due to its Coding culture which is top tier here. IIT Patna goes to ICPC every year (atleast since these last 3-4 years) which even some Gen 1 IITs don't and it ranks in top 10 in Inter IIT Tech Fest (since last 4-5 years) atleast ranking above Madras even last year. The coding culture will be visible when we come here because even a metallurgy guy may be coding and doing CP too. Other than CP, ML and Dev, all sorts of people with expertise in different fields you may find. The reason why it had better placements than some Gen 1 IITs is because of this coding culture. I wanted to go to University of Edinburgh and got offer too but It was not financially viable for me to choose so I came here. For coming to IIT Patna you need to get a good rank in JEE Advanced (rank depends on branch and category etc.). There are BTech and BS courses for which you can get admission and majority come through this. BSc course exists but its infamous and hated by all (us-BTech/BS)
Faculty
I'm in first year right now and in first year all branches have common courses so I can speak for that the faculty to student ratio is something around 250:1 approx (each CLH room's average] so the ratio is like this. However, if TAs (PHD students) or tutorials are asked about then the Faculty to student ratio in tutorials or labs would be something around 20:1. It is really easy to approach faculty you can directly ask them ques. before or after class, or you can just mail them at outlook. I have the liked the engineer. mechanics faculty Rishi sir and SunilKS sir both are really great in their subjects and have good academic backgrounds for example Rishi Raj sir have doctorate from MIT and Btech from IIT Guwahati and almost every faculty are from IITs (90% faculties). When it comes to faculty I didn't like it could be a CS professor we have named Arijit. There're Mid semester exams and end semester examinations including quizzes so 4 exams approx. They're and approx 7% fail yearly ig.
