Course Curriculum Overview
I wanted to get into games and development, and this course helped me solidify my background in 3D, art, visualization, direction, and much more. The course covers fundamentals of art, design, 3D, filmmaking, storywriting, VFX compositing, and editing. The areas for improements include having more depth to each course, or making the courses more specialized. For example, instead of having one class on aftereffects vfx and then one on video editing in premiere pro, there could be two classes that would allow us to go in depth in either one software. The frequency and timing of exams was fine for me, I wouldn't change anything about it.
Internships Opportunities
There were no official internships offered through the college. Almost all internships were found by the students through portals such as internshala and linkedin. Students who did not do an internship had to go for a capstone project in any related field, which they could showcase in Akkam, the annual design school event.
Placement Experience
In the last semester students become eligible for placements. The companies that visited this year were Saffronics and Tata Elxsi. I am unaware of the offers made. The packages offered were around 4 to 8 lakh rupees. Around 20% students got places, many of them went into freelancing or higher studies. I had an offer for 4lpa but refused it, since I wanted to focus more on my portfolio and skills.
Fees and Financial Aid
The total fees I paid for tuiton only was 1 lakh per year, around 48000 per semester. The caution deposit and registration fees were somwehere around 15000. I opted for VIT's 6 bedded hostel (M block) + special mess. This cost around 1.27 lakhs per year for me. I am not aware of the grants given by the college in this course to minorities. VIT gives 7k per year to the topper of the course, 6k to the runner up, and 1k subsequently to all the students who maintain a CGPA of above 9.0.
Campus Life
Gravitas, Riviera are the university festivals held in September and January respectively. The library is large and has a very big collection of books from non fiction to fiction. The majority of books are related to engineering though. We had industry standard pcs and facilities in our classrooms, including raytracing hardware and extremely high spec pc towers. There are plenty of sports activities going on throughout the campus, there is a gym and an outdoor stadium, along with students cups and tournaments being held regularly. There are hundreds of clubs and chapters which are all student led. I was the technical head of the VIT Animation club, which provided me with a lot of exposure to people.
Hostel Facilities
In my hostel, I tried out 2 bed, 4 bed and 6 bed as my friends grew throughout university. Per person a bed, cupboard, table and chair is given in the rooms. There is AC and non AC option. toilets and bathrooms are decent. The registration process happens once you have secured admission, through their online portal. Room placement is based on academic merit. Students with high rank can select their roommates. Hostels are affordable in my opinion. A 6 bed AC room with special mess cost me 1.27 lakhs for a year.
Admission
I chose this college because it's VIT Vellore. Large campus, lots of community life, many events and a happening place. There are many similar courses offered in small colleges throughout India, which have tiny buildings with small classrooms. But VIT Vellore has a beautiful campus and the memories I made there were amazing. I didn't get a rejection from any other colleges I applied to, I chose VIT over them. The admission process was online, I filled in the form and paid the registration fees of 500/- later I had to confirm my admission by paying the fees for the first semester. The eligility is based on 12th marks for this course, but almost all students that apply get in since the number of applications is low for this course.
Faculty
The faculty to student ratio is very good. There is around 1 faculty per 10 students, and they are all extremely approachable and helpful. Some faculties can be a little hard to deal with but that is expected. The best faculties in the course are M Raja sir, who is very patient with us; Ramalaxmi ma'am, who has a broad expertise and experience; and Kamalanathan sir, who is skilled at technical things such as developement and rigging. I wouldn't say there are any faculties whom I particularly disliked. Most of them try their best to guide us. There are 2 CAT (Continuous assessment test) exams and 1 FAT (Final assessment test) exam per semester. For our course these are fairly easy and don't require prep unless you haven't been attending classes. Majority of students pass the practical exams, but theory exams can be a little challenging. Around 25% of students tend to fail the theory exams such as Media ethics, Media management, VR fundamentals, etc. and have to clear the backlogs.
