Course Curriculum Overview
The Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture branch has its lab, the wave basin inside the department for the students to learn and run experiments. This lab is one of the largest wave basin labs for students in the Asian college. The courses from our department are relevant to the core job sectors and many students have been placed in various core job profiles over the period in both Indian and overseas companies. The frequency and timing of the exam are perfectly scheduled for a curriculum of 4-month semester.
Internships Opportunities
Internships are offered for B.Tech students from the start of 3rd year. There is a complete process of tests and interviews for the recruitment of internship process. Companies like Microsoft, Google, and many other core companies and noncore companies come for recruitment for internships from our college. Internship stipend ranges from 80k to 5L per month for software roles and core companies it may vary from 15k to 50k per month. The tenure for the internship ranges from 2-3months. There are many ongoing projects under each professor and students have an open acess to approach any professor to get an opportunity to work in that project and contribute something in their project.
Placement Experience
The placement and internship culture is very tough and rigorous in our college. Students start generally preparing from the end of 2nd year for internship which takes place from the start of 3rd year. The placement generally occurs at the end of the 7th semester for the B.TEch students. Some of the multinational companies like Google, Microsoft, BCG, BNY, JP Morgan, etc. come to recruit from our institute and recruit students from various profiles like software consult product managerial roles, etc. Some of the quant companies like Optiver offer packages in crores. The average package for software roles ranges from 20-30 LPA. In our department the previous year 75% of students got placed in various companies under different profiles. My plan is to target product or software-based companies and get placed in any of the companies and after that pursue an MBA from abroad.
Fees and Financial Aid
For students with categories like sc/st/EWS, the institute fees are near about 35000, and the hostel fees are 11500. Which total summed up to near about 47000. General category students have a total fee of around 1L30k (not completely sure). All these fees I have written are on a per-semester basis. There are many other scholarships for girl children or merit-based and family income-based.
Campus Life
The annual cultural fest is the Saarang and the annual Technical fest is the Shaastra. Shaastra is Asia's largest student-run technical fest. Saarang has a footfall of 80k visitors every year. Every student of IIT M can register any 3 books of their wish at a time. We have a library of 4 storied buildings with more than lakhs of books ranging from various categories of journals to academics to spiritual books. Each of the classrooms is air-conditioned with a smart board in the front and with a sitting capacity of 100 students in each classroom. IIT M has an excellent sports culture where a student can try and get exposure to every sport a student can think of. During the time of inter-IIT, the sports culture gets to a new height of exposure and importance. Each sports get allocated a budget every year for the development of the student in a particular sports and meet all the expenses regarding the equipment needed in that sport. There are more than 50+ student clubs in institute
Hostel Facilities
The hostel rooms are provided with a bed, an almirah to keep clothes, a study table, and a chair. All the windows are covered with mosquito nets. The food is not up to the expectations of the northern people. Every month we have to register for the mess there are 11 mess halls combined in total and students can choose any mess hall upon availability. Students of every year get allocated to different hostels which are allotted by the administrative office.
Admission
Being IIT Madras and NIRF 1 college and to gain the IIT Tag I joined this college which I believe has a huge impact on corporate life after graduation. Being in IIT we always receive a better exposure than any private college or 2nd Tier colleges in India. The admission process for the 4-year Btech program is that you have to clear one of the toughest exams JEE. Once you clear the cutoff for JEE mains you will get an opportunity to write the JEE advance exam. After clearing the JEE advanced exam upon the ranks you will get different IITs and their departments. Other than JEE I took the Wbjee exam which is the joint entrance exam for W.B state. Through that exam also I got some colleges in W.B.
Faculty
Our institution follows an exam pattern for each semester which is a total of 100 marks divided into three parts, Quiz 1 - 20 marks, Quiz 2 - 20 marks, and End sem- 60 marks. This mark distribution can be changed and adjusted according to the requirements of the course or under the guidance of the respective professors. The courses under the maths department are some of the toughest courses that the students have to clear during their curriculum. Many students get backlogged in the maths elective courses. In each class, there are around 70-75 students under a professor each semester.
