IIT Kanpur overall review

The nature of the courses at IIT Kanpur, particulary in field like Earth Sciences played a significant role in choosing this path for myself. The courses like sedimentology, geophysics and hydrology majorly affected my decision because my interests lied there. The curriculum provides research projects which prepares students for both industry roles and academic research. We have also field trips to get the real world experience and have a strong practical focus. Apart from this, there are different intership opportunities outside India which prepares students for further academic pursuits. A shift towards more project based assessments would allow students to aapply thoeretical knowledge in creative, hands-on ways. Many courses still rely heavily on traditional exams rather than practical or research-oriented evaluations. The timing of the exams is usually consistent, with midsems around the halfway point of the semster and the endsems at the end along with quizzes in between.

Multiple tech companies offer internship in various fields including tech, engineeering, finance and research. Tech companies like: Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Flipkart offer interships for roles such as software engineer, data scientist and machin learning engineer. Consulting and Finance firms: McKinsey, Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan offer roles like Analyst intern and Financial Modelling intern. Core engineering and Research Companies: Schlumberger, Tata Steel and ONGC offer internships in Geophysics, mechanical engineering and civil engineering, The stipend various based on the companies and industries like Google and Amazon offer 60,000-1 lakh rupees per month while core companes offer 20,000-50,000 rupees per month. There are multiple projects like a software develepor at microsoft has a task to enhance the company's cloud computing efficiency by automating server load managment. And the outcome could be that the tool increased server efficiency by 15% saving significant resources

Students become eligible for campus placements starting from 7th semester of their UG program. IIT Kanpur attracts top tier companies accross multiple sectors including tech, finance, consulting, core and research roles. Major companies visit IIT Kanpur like Microsoft, Amazon, IBM, Intel, McKinsey, BCG, ONGC, ExxonMobil, Schlumberger, Reliance Industries,JP Morgan, Flipkart and many more. The highest package came from international offers with salaries ranging upto 1-.5-2 crore per annum for roles in tech, finance and consuting. The average package across all sectors hovers around 15-20 lakhs per annum. The placement rate at IIT Kanpur is typically very high with aroung 85-95% of students securing jobs through campus placements, depending on the department and year. For highly sought after branches like CSE and EE the placement rate approaches 100%. My plans after completing the degree involve exploring further academic opportunites particularly in research or pursuing a PhD in ES

The year wise fees is 200000. Although for category students, the tution fee is waivered off. Tution fees- 100000 per semester Caution fee- 2000 Registration fee- 1200 per semester Admission fee- 3000 Hostel and Mess fee- 25000-30000 per semester Development fee-2000 per semester Lab fee- 5000 per semester The total fee for the complete course (4 years) can be around 8-10 Lakhs for general category students. For the students from SC/ST category, the tution fees are waived. They pay 30000-50000 rupess per year. There are many scholarships and financial aid available like: 1. Merit-cum-Means scholarship: If the family's income is below 6 lakh per year, you are eligible to avail this scholarship. 2. INSPIRE scholarship: FOr top students in science field 3. SC/ST scholarships: Specific to SC/ST students, covering other fee that they have to pay to the institute.

There are many events at IIT Kanpur like Techkriti (annual technical fest which attracts participants from across te country and features technical competitions, workshops and exhibitions in fields of science and technology), Udghosh ( annual sports festival involving intercollegiate competitions in sports like cricket, football, and athletice, among others), Antragani (one of the largest cultural festivals in India where students from all over the country participate in music, dance, fashion shows,etc) The PK Kelkar library offers a vast collection of books, journals, research papers. Students have access to international databases such as IEEE Explore. The book collection ranges upto 3 lakh books, along with that library has two floors of study spaces. There are modern classrooms with projectors, smart boards and high speed internet. IIT Kanpur boats a range of sports facilities as well and participate in the inter iit compeitions as well. IIT Kanpur is a big campus so you are alloted a hostel, for boys it is Hall 13 and for girls it is hall 4. They live in a shared room in their first year with a bed, study table, chair and bookshelf. There is high speed wifi. The hostels mess provides three meals a day with a rotating menu that includes both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. The hostel registration is well organized and usually happens alongside course registration. The hostel fees are quite afforable compared to renting outside. The fee is aroung 25000-30000 per semester

seI chose this college for the curriculum it offered in the department of Earth Sciences. My decision was driven by my interests and it is one of the top iits in India. I gave the JEE (Main) exam which filters the top candidates from a pool of millions. Then came JEE (ADV) exam which is most competitive entrance exam for students seeking admission in engineering and science programs. I had applied in different iits for different branches as well, by my rank was the major factor in deciding my college. I didnt choose other iits because they had a low nirf ranking. I did face rejection from a few institutes like IIT Bombay primarily due to the competitive nature of the programs i applied for. the cutoffs for certain branches were high. Admission at IIT Kanpur is based on performance in the JEE (ADV). To qualify for JEE Advanced, you must first clear JEE Main. For es, the cutoff ranks are generally low so it is easy to get into this branch. IITs have transparent counselling process.

The faculty to student ratio at IIT Kanpur is relatively low, providing students with personalized attention support whenever required. Most professors are approachable with open office hours and a willingness to help students beyong classroom lectures. In the ES department, all the faculty members are highly qualified with strong acadmeic research backgrounds. There are no professors in our department that you cannot like because everyone are very humble and are ready to help you whenever possible. Generally there are two main exams per semester- mid semester exam and end semester exam along with quizzes, assignments and practicals that contribute to the final grade. Exams can range from moderately challenging to difficult, depending on the courses. In Earth Scienes, most courses are easy to score so a very few students may struggle with specific course. But the overall failure rate is low as most students are well prepared by the faculty. The course curriculum is very revelant
