What Students Say?
Likes
- The peer group here is brilliant. We definitely have a future bhatnagar prize winner here
- The faculty is usually incredibly smart and experts in their field
Dislikes
- The administration here is very uncooperative.
- You're expected to be highly independent, no handholding or even guidance is given
Course Curriculum Overview
In my opinion, the relevance is extremely subjective, in certain subjects we learn way more than what is expected from undergraduate students, in others our knowledge level is comparitively less. It depends on the faculty member taking the course honestly. It changes course to course.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions
We pay 1 lakh per annum for everything including hostels, lab fees, library charges etc. Only daily food charges are not covered. For general, OBC and EWS categories the fee is the same. But for SC/ST the fee is around 46k per annum. INSPIRE scholarship is allocated to students here, worth around 70k per year if you're in the top students of your board after 12th STD.
Campus Life
Our fest is Inquivesta, India's oldest Science fest, this time it's going to be held in February 2025. We also have inter iiser cultural meet for cultural competitions, and inter iiser sports meet for sports competitions. The campus life here is pretty good, with students having a lot of freedom
Hostel Facilities
The hostels are in okay condition. The double occupancy rooms are to be shared by 3 people in the first two years, because new hostels have not been built yet. The hostels are compulsory as it is a fully residential campus, and the fee is included in the total fees. Mess is decent compared to other colleges
Admission
I got into iit Kharagpur, but I always wanted to do research so thought this was a better option. My original aim was IISc Bangalore, but their cut off was too high. But now for future batches it's easier to get into IISc through the IAT exam which is for both iiser and iisc
Faculty
The first two years the class sizes are quite huge. First year it's around 200, second year it's around 100, but third year onwards class size reduces drastically. For the Math department, often the class size is 12-20 people. Exams here are super stressful and really tough. Around 50 people fail/drop out by the second year as it's quite hard to cope with the syllabus. Faculty themselves are good though
